I'm replacing my Milton DP's chuck with a Jacobs. Capacity is 3 to 16mm as per the DP specs.

16N Super Ball Bearing Chuck

Here are the tools I will use to remove the existing chuck and arbor.

Lower the spindle

Insert the tool and hit it with a dead blow hammer. The wood will catch the chuck when it drops ...

Re: Drill Press Chuck Upgrade

Check the run out for analysis data

Here's the new chuck ... i deburred the chuck hole a bit then cleaned all mating surfaces with lacquer thinner. I also lightly coated the new arbor ( Morse Taper 2 to Jacobs Taper 3 ) with oil.

inserted the arbor to the chuck with slight spinning motions

withdrew the jaws .... placed the chuck on aluminum and gave the arbor a few sharp blows using a soft face hammer

Re: Drill Press Chuck Upgrade

Installation on the DP is the reverse of the removal process. But first I cleaned the DP taper with lacquer thinner and coated the MT2 arbor portion with light oil. Inserted it back to the DP and gave it a few upward hammer blows.

Checking run out again

I measure around 0.13 mm total indicated run out when the drill bit is rotated. I don't know if I can still improve this by tweaking the DP itself. Probably I'll remove and reinstall the chuck gain later and see if there is improvement. Later I will bring the 16N to a machine shop. Chuck it up on a lathe and measure any run out on the chuck and arbor itself.

Update : Subtract pala yun lower value (.03 ) to upper value (.1) and not add to get total run out. Thus 0.07mm pala and not 0.13mm.
Here read it.

I have to do more reading on this subject. Any mistakes in my posts are all mine. I would appreciate any inputs on this regard because I think I need to repeat these measurements.

Re: Drill Press Chuck Upgrade

This new chuck is light years away from the stock Swan 3-16mm that came with the Milton DP. First off is that it self aligns the bit during installation. Very smooth opening and closing. You can feel how strong the jaws bite the bits. I doubt if I will ever have slipping bits while using this particular chuck.

14mm bit - drilling test run on 1/2" thick mild steel

the hole made is now with in my acceptable tolerance for the drill bit size used

Split point pilot bit test

Seems all ok now .... I had too much bit wobble before the upgrade that I did break a few smaller pilot split point bits ( because of too much run out).

For now this Milton DP will serve my needs in tapping holes until I find a better 2nd hand DP that is worth rebuilding.

Here's the DP now with the new chuck ... hefty chuck LOL

I do understand that with the new chuck your run-out can be reduced to acceptable levels, did you encounter any slip with the original chuck (cause I never experienced it in mine)?
and were the holes made with the original chuck gave you unacceptable result? what tolerance do you use to make it acceptable anyway bro?
I'm glad this cures your dp concerns, good luck on a bigger, better find in the future...

With the DP I did what you did with yours ... align the belt pulleys. When it was new I did not have any problems ... matagal din.

Then the troubles started ... when I insert a drill bit in the chuck I have to try several times to get it aligned and tightened. It also started slipping it almost damaged the shank of a 27/64" Norseman bit. I also got wobble to the point that I started breaking smaller bits.

I note that these only started after a while of metal working ( there were times when I drill at 16mm max on 1/2" thick mild steel ) . When it was new I did woodworking for more than a year without issues.

Preferrable tolerance for me is that the hole size should at least be the same size as the bit and the hole true ( < 0.1 mm ). It is important for tapping.

In addition I started to hear strange noise now in the main drive pulley. Probably time to open it up and investigate.

With the new chuck holes are now true and with in acceptable tolerance.

Re: Drill Press Chuck Upgrade

Cleaned up old grease and re greased / oiled the Milton Drill Press. All is smooth now including raising and lowering the table.

Check your DP's and maintain if you haven't done so yet. It does make a difference.:)

Re: Drill Press Chuck Upgrade

I thoroughly cleaned and lubed the old Milton DP chuck. It seems to be working now. Probably the DP problems all boils down to maintenance. LOL

Anyway I'm happy I upgraded to a Super Chuck. I always wanted to have one. Hehhehheheh

The added precision and smoothness of a high performance chuck makes even a Taiwanese low end DP a joy to use.

Re: Drill Press Chuck Upgrade

Nice.

A little OT. I like your vise/table arrangement. I got a similar vise(Irwin) in my last US trip for my Ryobi DP. Tried attaching it to my DP's stock platform but it's awkward. Now I realize I should pair it with a homemade table like yours. Ahhh...jigs never end.

Go go go ... grabe bro swabe magpalit ng mga bits .... self centering.

comparison of old and new chuck size ( same capacity 16mm max )

Beware of Jacobs chuck ... seems like they dropped the ball when they moved production to China .... get NOS or used US made ones.

This DP table was Master Timber's design. I'm not sure if the WIP posts were transferred from our old site ( tipidpc.com ) to PHM.

The table is a very useful upgrade to my DP. It was worth the build.
