Re: FEEDBACK and REVIEW for YAMATO 200 DC Inverter arc welder

Great series, bro! Keep it coming!

On the stainless steel plate, was it SS304 or SS316? Reason I asked is because I need to fabricate a centerboard for my boat. That's the retractable "fin" or keel at the bottom of the boat. I had planned on outsourcing it but, encouraged by your experience, may try it myself. But I will need it to be done in stainless, preferably 316.

Also, do you use special rods for SS? Would be a shame if your material won't corrode but the welds do.

Re: FEEDBACK and REVIEW for YAMATO 200 DC Inverter arc welder

My personal FINDINGS and REVIEW for this 200 amp DC inverter arc welder :

FOR APPEARANCE :

The machine is a very compact, very light and attractive welding machine, can easily be plugged in an ordinary electrical household socket. It can easily be carried around the house for maintenance repairs and usage. No need to buy extra cables to be attached, cables goes with it and connecting them to the machine is a breeze and very simple. With very simple and uncomplicated front control panel. After usage, it can easily be stored in a cabinet shelves unlike their old models of AC welders that are usually very heavy and bulky.

Drawback for me is that it has very short electrical cables, I wish they had made it longer. Another one is the electrode holder, if only the manufacturer had installed a holder with deeper grooves on the "TEETH", its the part that grips the welding electrode. Anyway it can easily be replaced with a better one.

FOR PERFORMANCE :

Basing on my test on weld application, I'm satisfied with its performance, very easy to start the welds, something new to me is that it produces a quieter hissing sound only compared to my AC welder. The welder produces less sparks and spatters on the metal surface. Applying the welds were so easy because I guess the electrode holder is just the right size and its light, it can easily be handled and manuevered. I haven't experienced heating or overheating on the body of the machine inspite of continous weld applications.

This will not be my final say here since I only tested it for a half day, I still have 6 months to a year to use this machine and probably by that time I will know if it will deliver and will satisfy my expectations plus if it will last that long, but hopefully longer with just proper/correct usage.

FOR RECOMMENDATION :

Yes I can say that this DC welder can be recommended for welding enthusiast, for DIYers and beginners alike. Due to its lightness and being compact, this is perfect for house repairs and maintenance repairs. For metal projects, very easy to use, it can weld personal welding projects and with the electrical consumption, it consumes lot less than the old AC welders plus the current price given by the seller is very fair, inviting, and very affordable. It has also a 6 months warranty for any defects just in case.

For beginners, you just have to be content with their free flimsy welding mask plus the wire bush cum chipping hammer.

MY OVERALL RATING :

Bro Ding,

I have three kinds of stainless rods with me, the NIHONWELD NSS312 and its the 1/8" diameter. Another one are the 3/32" diameter rods, from NIHONWELD also, NSS 308-16 and the STAN-ARC 308.
I cannot give you yet a definite answer since I am still experimenting on different brands and nos. with regards to SS welding electrode. Maybe you can inquire from technicians or salesperson from TOOLEC when you start buying SS welding electrodes. 😉 🙂 Plus what thickness of SS will you be using for your "fin" ??

More weld applications will be seen on another thread, "LET's PRACTICE STICK WELDING..............". I'll be using this welder to really test and find out other aspects regarding this DC Inverter, I have more than 6 months to find out and prove its worth.

Stay tuned for feedback and reviews. :chopper:

Bro Rosy ... infinite current adjustments up to 200A ba ito or click type siya . Meaning there are pre set values?

Any pics of the inside of the machine? Thanks

Probably we can make a mod also to install a digital display current meter.

Re: FEEDBACK and REVIEW for YAMATO 200 DC Inverter arc welder

Nope, The ampere knob/dial is not the click type, you can set the amperage to what ever you desire, from 20 to 200 amps.

Well installing a digital window is kinda interesting but modifying it this soon is not advisable, maybe I'll wait until the warranty expires plus YAMATO welding machines are made with no digital window, even their TIG or MIG machines which I saw in the seller's warehouse when I purchased this unit. 😉 😎

My centerboard ("fin") should be between 20mm to 22mm. I assume that is weldable with this rig?

BTW, have no idea how much stainless steel of that thickness would cost. Nor how it is bought. Hingi na lang ako sa iyo ng advice when the time comes.

Re: FEEDBACK and REVIEW for YAMATO 200 DC Inverter arc welder

@ balarila,

Converting the thickness of 20mm or 22mm to inches, it will roughly fall within the 3/4 or 7/8 of an inch, more or less thickness., Medyo makapal pala ano ? Well as I have suggested on the other thread about getting a DC Tig inverter, you can bevel one edge then apply several passes of ss welding electrode using stick rod welding to get a complete fusion of the metal then probably cap the last application with a TIG weld application para magandang tingnan. ;):D:cool:

Ding,

I just remembered, when you are coming home from work, di ba sa Sumulong Hi way daan mo going up the winding road, on the way up before reaching that castle like looking resto, medyo sa ibaba pa, there are two(2) large scrap yards na madadaanan mo on the right side, they are brothers yata, name is B n Q metals, SORRY i CAN'T REMEMBER THE EXACT NAME ON THEIR SIGN BOARD, but nevertheless may be you can pass by them and ask if they have stainless steel of that thickness if they are selling and just find out how much it is per klg. if they have.

Also for some metals for practice welding, you can buy some in these scrap yard, its cheaper than buying whole full sheet or length of flat bars.

And also, do you know the big industrial store sa junction, Cainta, I think its better to source the stainless rods there so you can also ask for more information the right SS rod application you are seeking, instead of going to TOOLEC INC. sa may Libis pa. Name of store is MY TOOLS, I buy my heavy duty tools there also and the owner is very accommodating, they have heavy machineries, power tools, welding equipments, compressors and so many more. Actually I am saving up again to purchase a welding rod oven there, I know this will be very usefull to me, have seen and inquired about it. 😉 😎
This store/establishment is very much different from the usual DIY Shops.

Hope this helps, check it out too. :massbounce:

Re: FEEDBACK and REVIEW for YAMATO 200 DC Inverter arc welder

Yup. I know those scrap yards and My Tools in Cainta.

Yes, those two scrapyards are related. I actually got some angular from them before to use as bracings for clamping large laminates. Good suggestion. Will get my practice metals from them.

My Tools is a good shop. It's the only shop I know nearby that actually has an assortment of router bits.

Thanks.

Re: FEEDBACK and REVIEW for YAMATO 200 DC Inverter arc welder

Got the 200A Yamato today ... price was reasonably good for a 200A DC Inverter welder.

Replaced the crappy electrode holder with a 250A Tweco Stinger.

Replaced the ground clamp too. I reckon this 300A Lenco clamp will be good enough.

Did nothing but play around with the welder first just burning different types of electrodes usually at near max settings to break it in.

This is a user friendly DC welder with a soft arc. No doubt it will find use in the home tasks I have in mind for it. Now I don't need to lug heavy welding equipment and cables. I can also use normal household outlets. I know it won't be used much as it can't match a Mig welder. However for on spot builds, repairs and maintenance .... convenience is its strength.
