Hope someone can post a photo of us and put names. I'm good with faces but very bad with names.

BTW, tried to weld two pieces together for the first time. Got a hex bolt, put it on top of my steel plate, then proceeded to weld it. Nalusaw! Ha-ha. I now have a lump on the steel plate!

backreading muna, then occasional welding, baka makalimutan yung mga tips nila brad rosy and jayL....
small metal projects muna...
darating din tayo dyan sa mga metal projects na yan, as what brad rosy is showing to us, metal working is very promising...
pero yung pagawa ng grills ang pinupuntirya ko muna...thanks !!!

I wanted to see if I could weld 1.5mm square tubes and angle bars for a shelf wip so I set to test my Yamato welder.

I prepare some metals for testing 1.5mm tube ... cut the miter

clean the edges

clean the mini table

setup the test piece

Initially setup the welder to around 100A ... DCEN so more heat on the rod than on the workpiece

My first choice of rod is the Cigweld 7024 ... but will test the smaller diameter Nihon Weld 6013 as my other option

will need some 60 grit sandpaper, a file or a cutter .... 7024 ... the outer flux shell will cover the rod after every use so will need something to expose the metal part for quick starts

Of course the mandatory protection ... helmet, gloves and if needed a bandana for sweat

The Miller fire retardant cotton welding jacket. Good bang for the buck purchase and the best part is it is not too warm when wearing it.

Trying to dial in the amperage for the 7024 rod on this test scrap ... 140A ( pic ) ... 100A is too low . Since it's a test piece I reversed the process ... starting at the highest setting then going lower as needed.

A good way to expose the metal portion of the 7024 during re starts

Clean up ....

Stick welding the shelf wip will work but it will take me more time to finish than if I Mig welded it. For example the stick weld beads are harder to grind than wire welds. Slag clean up also takes up time. Probably I'll just make use of both welders and use these at appropriate portions. Stick welding though will cost me less as consumables are cheaper plus less electric needed.

The Yamato is a sweet welder .... specially the price. I got carried a bit away so collected some more scraps for testing.

this time I used Nihon Weld 6013 ... thin rod ... rod scratch start test

not a bad rod to use but I do blow some holes from time to time

I used a Mig technique to cover the holes ... " zawzaw zawzaw" lang

just give the metal enough time to cool down first before putting the rod back in ... then withdraw immediately as soon as a bead is formed ... then repat

Continued a few more test on different scrap thickness to help me dial in the welder using other rods Wipweld thicker 6013 rod and Nihon weld 6011

slag cleanup so I can analyze the welds better ... my tool of choice is a needle scaler
