A must tool or tools for the metal fabricators and welders alike.
We all know that angle grinders are very useful and versatile tool that can be used for cutting, grinding, wire brushing, sanding and even polishing.

Aside from its metal applications it is also used for cutting bricks, roof tiles, ceramic tiles marble slabs and concrete paving blocks.

For starters, I've posted pics of my angle grinders, from 4" inches disc diameter up to the larger angle grinder of 9" inches disc diameter.I use them always sparingly for my welding and metal projects or otherwise for projects that needs cutting of tiles or concrete pavers.:p

Each grinder has its own designation so its easier and faster for me to use, like the two smaller B & Ds, I use them for grinding while the Lotus and the larger B & D, they're for rust removal or wire brushing, and the larger Dewalt is used for metal cutting, like steel bars, small pipes, angle bars and MS plates.8)

Do post your thoughts and queries regarding this tool and let us share and exchange ideas on how it is used may it be rechargeable or the electric powered grinder.

Re: Let's Talk About ANGLE GRINDERS

The 9" will be very useful for fast grinding of larger surfaces. I have only up to 5" and there are times I could think of when I wished it was bigger.

Here are my grinders.

Re: Let's Talk About ANGLE GRINDERS

Yes larger angle grinders makes grinding faster and easier. If you could get hold of the new BOSCH 1900 series angle grinder, that would be great as an addition to a grinder collection.

I would love to have one of this angle grinder, such so many new features and it has surpassed tests against the competitions. For a large grinder, its 20% lighter than the others and most importantly its anti vibration control, ang galing, oh another feature is the ergonomic grip handle rotates for easy use, I wonder if they have it here locally.

here's the link of that youtube video for reference, regarding the 1900 series of Bosch large angle grinder.

Dami nyo angle sander sir..
Gamitin natin sa Experiment, sa endurance test just what we did years back sa mga jigsaws..
All the same time start it to run and run and run until the last grinder standing running..And the winning brand is the last one running..LOL
Just an idea lang sir..But definitely it would settle and redicule all reviews out there..LOL8)

I will donate ozito and ryobi`s and some china made grinder also...

REALLY? you will donate and replace the grinders that will konk out in the experiment?

Sorry I will not waste my time in doing such wasteful test or experiments, these are not just cheap tools to be used for experimentations, let the companies manufacturing these tools do the endurance test for their products. Hard earned money were spent on these tools so its not that easy to play with it or do some testing on their endurance or motor power. :p

For doing so with such experiments, what did you achieved really, what? Did it made you happy? Did it made you a better person now than before? I think you just wasted those jigsaws that you used for your experiments. Such childish acts.

I have a challenge for you, why don't you experiment on all the Ozito tools and all the Ryobi tools you are marketing, let it run side by side until the last tool remain running, then maybe by then you can proudly recommend to us customers which of the two brands is worth buying.

Re: Let's Talk About ANGLE GRINDERS

I think I understand what bro Pyth is trying to convey. Not all Ozito and Ryobi products are not as poor performing as most would think of. This may be true and not as there as many factors to consider.

However, as much as I want to agree, a long no-load running test does not give a true mark of performance, durability or whatsoever. Of course, the difference of the wire gauge and the number of windings of a 50Hz motor would run cooler when run in a 60Hz environment in a no load scenario. However, this is not a typical job load for any tool for that matter - and every power tool owner knows that.

We could mention many factors such as temperature cut-off, plastic durability, ergonomics, battery life expectancy, not to mention warranty and after-sales service and parts. All these come to play thus every tool have it's own price range thus the saying "you get what you pay for" applies most of the time. Sometimes, a tool maybe as enticing as it could be but due to the price, the buyer is lured to buy a cheaper one. On the other hand, a tool may be a "bang for the buck" deal but due to brand/warranty/parts concerns, the buyer opts for the more expensive one.

In the end, it all boils down to the user's budget, preference and experience. Some may endure the long way, some may enjoy the short way. As any tool is a mechanical device that has a chance to experience failure, it would all depend to the sole unit that will land in your hands and how you use/maintain it.

All those who have experienced a tool failure understands that a warranty is not only for peace of mind but also for sanity's sake.

Re: Let's Talk About ANGLE GRINDERS

I'm a woodworker and know nothing about metalworking. Have thus resisted buying an "almighty grinder" as I wanted to be true to my craft and snobbishly ignore the wealth of short cuts that a grinder would offer.

But a slim type B&D came on sale at True Value so gave it a shot. It has now become one of my most used tool. I find it great for correcting mistakes (and I make a lot of 'em!). Great for quick sanding off of drops/spills of hardened epoxy or whittling down wood to size before sanding.

Re: Let's Talk About ANGLE GRINDERS

endurance test just what we did years back sa mga jigsaws

Even if you cannot remember the exact results or prefer not to name the jigsaws, can you share the approximate range of TTF (Time to Failure) values that you got? This is interesting data.

Are we talking in the tens of hours? 100s? 1,000s? 10,000s?

I don't know what statistically valid conclusions, if any, can be drawn from a single measurement of TTF per brand, but definitely the values are 'estimators' (in statistics speak) of the MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) of each brand. Taken together, the values can be used to calculate an 'estimator' of the MTTF of jigsaws in general.

Re: Let's Talk About ANGLE GRINDERS

Well this is just a reaction again to srt pyth's previous post and sir jarod's latest post regarding angle grinders.

First of all I have nothing against sir pyth, in fact I consider him as a new friend specially here at PHM, we have met twice already on meet-ups in Manila. I've purchased from him several tools already, Ozito and McCulloch brands. Now I'm not saying that OZITO or RYOBI brands are not of quality when it comes to power tools. I know they are made in China and they are being sold here in our country cheap.

The thing here is I disapprove of his gesture for an experiment on power tools just to find out which would stand out and last longer in a running test. Well I guess his sort of invitation for a test ay isa lang na biro and I quote, "Just an idea lang sir".

Anyway anybody with several power tools expensive or cheapos will not subject his tool collections to such wasteful and unneccessary experiment or tests. There is no need for this, owners of these cheap china made tools should simply take care and maintain their tools right after each use. I have some too and I know their capabilities and limitations and hopefuly will also last me long enough given the proper maintenace and upkeep.

Re: Let's Talk About ANGLE GRINDERS

Guys which 7" angle grinder do you think will be a good choice? Any idea on prices?

I think a 9" will be too big for what I do already.

Re: Let's Talk About ANGLE GRINDERS

@jay,
if the inside diameter of the Chop Saw disc is the same with angle grinder 9", go for it. you can still use the CS's disc when it reaches 9" 🙂 what do you think?

Re: Let's Talk About ANGLE GRINDERS

Hi JayL I saw some 7" DEWALT angle grinder in some DIY stores, these are the old original stocks that are still made in England, this grinder has a smaller compact body and also lighter.
I think they are selling this for almost 7K, better check out first DIY stores or other mall hardwares if they still carry old stocks. I know they now sells new stocks or models made in China, just don't know if the quality is the same as the original ones. 😮

You may also consider the new BOSCH angle grinders, they have new features that the other brands of grinders does'nt carry. Features like the anti-vibrations on the handles, tooless for changing grinding or cutting discs or even changing the position of the disc guard, the small motor but with a 4.0 hp and most of all the 20% less weight among all brands. :p

The 9" DEWALT that I have is really heavy and it weighs 17 lbs or 7.5 kg, man its really heavy but it cuts fast and grinds fast too. The reason why I bought it was because it was on sale for 50% off. I got it only for 5k, from the original price of 10.5K. I think they were selling it at a giveaway price because nobody is buying the large angle grinders and new batch or models of stocks are coming in.

Anyway why don't you talk to sir timber since PHM is promoting or endorsing BOSCH products
get in touch with his contact and get the neccessary infos regarding their new line of angle grinders and their price too. Good luck on your choice of angle grinder. 😉

If given a chance to buy another angle grinder, I'd pick this new Bosch angle grinder and try their new features. I haven't had a Bosch brand of power tools yet. I know its a good brand, known all over the world for its durability and performance. Hey I'm not endorsing any brand here, its just a choice since I've tried other good brands too.
