Re: lf: 3/4 drill bit 12 inches long
For wood? Check Han's, Panda, or other store for --
Record/Marples auger ('multi-speed woodboring') bit
R235 - Universal series, 8"
R285 - Long series, 13"
R295 - Extra long series, 16-18"
(I don't remember seeing 3/4" before though.)
Drexel auger bit
(Han's had Drexel 3/4" but only 8".)
Long or extra long drill bit,
e.g., Dormer A110 long series - 3/4", cut len 166 mm, overall len 254 mm
so you probably need extra long (12" ?) series
Beam bit
(I happen to have Colt 3/4" obtained in US but it is only 10".)
Maybe Forstner bit ... with a very long extension?
Anyone seen *really long* extenders for Forstner bits, say beyond 3" or so extension?

I think this forstner bit extension will be a good option:

I think you have it spot on Camv, the auger bits kasi might crack the materials wide open unlike the forstner bits. unfortunately, I haven't come across forstner bit extensions locally...

Brader based on youtube video posted at infinity website: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1zOGmuMM1I&feature=player_embedded
I think the colt forstner bit cuts cleaner & removes the chips out better than auger bit because it has chip breaker, there's less need to withdraw the cutter.
They have a 10.5" extension for deep cuts: http://www.amazon.com/MaxiCut-Forstner-Bit-Extension-270mm/dp/B0035Y9946/ref=sr_1_26?ie=UTF8&qid=1336421115&sr=8-26
I may be wrong though

don't get me wrong. Unless you are drilling a thick stock and not too dense wood, an auger bit will give you problems. the aguer kasi has a threaded front portion which bites into the material pulling them deep even when the big cutting part isn't ready to cut, thus stressing the material.
on the otherhand, you can use a shopvac to help clear the debris when using a forstner.
are you doing this cut on a drill press or a lathe?

hi cam and timber...
first thanks for the guidance...im quite impressed with the colt forstner maxi but it has only 10.5 inches length...i need at least 12 inches sana...kung meron lang...
sir timber im doing this on a lathe machine...12 inches ang haba ng kahoy na bubutasan ko end to end kaya i need the 12 long...
if there is i maxi 12 long i would get it in a jiffy....impressed with the youtube vid...
thanks guys ....still looking...

there are longer extenders for forstner bits Red, colt bits are as good as they come, mahal din.
just google and hope they are available or matches with the bit.
You can also use two extenders since you are using a lathe (you can hopefully lower the speed for better control and cleaner cut....
here is a 10" extender but not available, there are others....

Hi ron,
10.5" is for the extender only. you add the 3.5" length of forstner bit for a total of 14" less the length to be inserted to the chuck & the extender. I think this will be sufficient for your requirements. Or you may opt for 2 extenders as suggested by brader timb but this setup will be a bit pricey.
Re: lf: 3/4 drill bit 12 inches long
Damn, those Colt extenders are specific to the Colt MaxiCut ... which are 2x the cost of 'good' Forstner bits, but damn they look good.
Was aware of MiaxiCut through Lee Valley but didn't realize until your mention now, that they were actually Colt (Lee Valley doesn't say and I didn't bother to check before).
I wonder if we could just cut out asymmetrical notches in the cutting edges of our Forstner bits and get the same effect for half the cost? More importantly, grind a flat on the round shaft so that the set screws of extenders wouldn't slip? But damn, I'd hate to do this to 'good' Forstner bits.
I used to use auger bits in handheld drill to make holes in framing studs for cables/pipes ... quick and dirty, especially if you have to pass a cable through so many studs to get from A to B ... very aggressive bit and leaves nasty exit holes. Not exactly fine furnituremaking. But if used in a press or lathe with the material secured from being pulled into the bit, maybe their tendency to dig in could be much better controlled ... and not have to be dictated by the pitch of the threaded point?
Re: lf: 3/4 drill bit 12 inches long
auger bits are aggressive, period! they are designed specifically for use with braces (hand drill) which exerts tremendous amount of torque but not speed. use them with a constant speed drill, a little too fast and you will lose control fast.
As for the Colt Maxicut, I believe their performance lies more on the ejection of chips more than the cut due to the jagged tips. several frostner bits followed the maxicut teeth, but they can't yet match the way it ejects chips which btw is what keeps them cool and keep the sharpness longer. Of course the metal use could be way different as well...
