I would like to share a very simple trick here when using an angle grinder specially fitted with a new grinding disc. This tip is for the first time new owners of this versatile power tool and probably for old timers as well who have had experienced difficulty in using an angle grinder fitted with a new grinding disc.

Here I'll be using my grinders as models to demonstrate the simple trick.................:p

Two of my angle grinders I commonly use. And for new owners, what ever brand or size you prefer this trick will still apply, but usually for first time owners or users, the 4" angle grinders are the preferred ones for lightness, easy handling and maneuverability.

Usually when we buy an angle grinder we are supplied with 1 new grinding disc and we see the edges of this disc to be still sharp and un-rounded or evidently un-used.

Re: Simple TIPS or TRICKS for Angle Grinder users !

OK, that is why this particular tool is called an angle grinder. It is used to grind or sand metal surfaces in an angle position at about 15, 20, 25 or 30 degree angles and the tip or edge of the grinding disc only touching the metal surface.

If one can see, its the tip or the edge only of the disc is touching the metal surface in an angle position and not in a flat position. Many new owners with no experience in using this tool thinks its used in a flat position, but why not ?, only thing is that its not effective !

Re: Simple TIPS or TRICKS for Angle Grinder users !

For seasoned or pro users, movement of this angle grinder is usually a back and forth movement or even in somewhat circular motion but that will depend on the user plus not really pressing hard on the angle grinder, just letting the weight of the angle grinder doing the job specially with the heavier ones like the 7" or the 9" incher large angle grinders.

Here's the trick, with your new angle grinder fitted with new grinding disc, run your grinder slowly on the metal surface to be grinded with one regular motion that is towards you for several times, just the backward motion again and again. By doing so you will prevent digging dip on the metal surface when you immediately start with the forward and back motions. The sharp edge of the grinding disc when moved forward will certainly eat up the surface and will live a deep mark on the metal being grinded.

So a reminder to new users, backward motion first toward the direction of the user for several times for the purpose of rounding off the disc's sharp edge.

Now when you see the disc edge somewhat rounded or tappered, then the back and forth motion can already be applied leaving even grinding results on the metal surface.

HOPE THIS TIP HELPS !!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Simple TIPS or TRICKS for Angle Grinder users !

Useful tips, Rosy. I mistakenly thought one uses the angle grinder's disk flat on the material.

Ha-ha. I use my little grinder to quickly cut off some globs of leftover epoxy. On aggressive wood cutting, I use one of those flapdisks.

Metalworking is still a year away for me, for when I start building a trailer for my boat!

Re: Simple TIPS or TRICKS for Angle Grinder users !

HERE ARE SOME MORE VERY IMPORTANT TIPS WHEN USING YOUR ANGLE GRINDER.

First of all let's check first our PERSONAL SAFETY :

1.) Make sure to wear eye protection such as safety goggles or face mask/shield, these are protection against sparks and metal dusts.
2.) For ear protection, use ear muffs or ear plugs, we don't want our ear drums to be affected.
3.) For hand protection, wear rubber gloves, cotton gloves or leather work gloves.
4.) Some respiratory equipment like valve respirator, or face mask.
5.) Our work clothings should be comfortable, probably cotton long sleeves, coveralls, and leather steel toe shoes or boots.

When starting up the grinder, some safety pointers to KEEP IN MIND:

1.) Make sure the guard handles are secure.
2.) Check the disc guard if properly and firmly secure.
3.) Make sure there are no obvious defects or damage to the disc before installing.
4.) Use the correct type of disc for your intended applications.
5.) Use the correct flange or spindle nut for the type of disc being used.
6.) The smaller the grinder, the higher the speed it turns.
7.) Hold your grinder firmly and the other hand on the extra handle for total hand control.

HOPE THESE TIPS HELPS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :groupwave: :chopper:

These are some protections that can be used when operating an angle grinder. FACE SHIELDS and GOGGLES for your eyes., EAR MUFFS to protect the ears, hahaha, particularly for your ear drums and a NOSE/MOUTH RESPIRATOR with valve or any of those nose covering devices just to protect you from inhaling the very fine metal dust. 😉

This is a nice pair of cotton rubberized hand gloves so you can grip the grinder firmly without slipping. 😎

Re: Simple TIPS or TRICKS for Angle Grinder users !

AND SOME ADDITIONAL INPUTS HERE TOO :

We all know that angle grinders are a very powerful and versatile kind of electric power tool, it can be used for different applications when fitted with different disc attachments or wheel brushes. Angle grinders range from 4" (100mm) up to 9" (230mm) and its grinding size relates to the diameter of the grinding or cutting disc, these are so powerful that discs fitted turns at speed that ranges from 5,000 rpm to 12,000 rpm . So powerful that there should always be some safety checks every time this tool is used.

Using an angle grinder requires the user to be fully aware of how to properly handle the power tool plus to know also the safety steps and precautions to ensure proper use and handling of the grinder specially the larger ones. If the given task requires a smaller size angle grinder, so much the better, these smaller grinders are safer than the larger ones like the 7" or 9" angle grinders.

I have some safety tips here that I would like to share ones more if you intend to purchase these large angle grinders, the 7" incher or the 9" incher.
These safety tips were based also from my experience when using these larger angle grinders aside from some readings from the net and hope these tips become valuable to the future owners of this kind of grinders. Using these large angle grinders are more dangerous than the smaller ones and safety is of the utmost importance here as they are very powerful and heavy machines.

These are my large angle grinders, A 9" DEWALT angle grinder, a 7" DEWALT angle grinder, and a 7" BLACK & DECKER angle grinder.

This is my 9" incher DEWALT.

And the two 7" inchers, DEWALT and BLCK & DECKER.

Re: Simple TIPS or TRICKS for Angle Grinder users !

Usually large angle grinders are provided with three point positions where the auxiliary handle support can be positioned for ease of usage and handling.

One on the right side, and the other on the left side and then on the top side of the angle grinder. These three points provided are for the auxiliary handle/extra handle tobe attached to the grinder head, and for users to be able to handle and control the heavy weight of the angle grinder regardless of whether the user is a left handed or a right handed as well.

Yes bro I will specially for this 9" incher which I only use for cutting metals or concrete slabs.

Actually bro, cutting and slicing discs are much more dangerous 😮 compared to the grinding disc we usually use.

Re: Simple TIPS or TRICKS for Angle Grinder users !

Here I have posted pics of the 9" Dewalt and 7" Black & Decker angle grinders beside a smaller 4"B&D angle grinder just to show how different their sizes are. With regards to the 7" Dewalt, comparison is not much since the grinder has been made compact compared to the B & D grinder but it still packs some weight and torque.

This 9" DEWALT angle grinder weighs 16.4 lbs or 7.5 kgs and with a 6,000 rpm.

And this 7" BLACK & DECKER angle grinder weighs 12.5 lbs or almost 6.0 kgs and with an 8,400 rpm.

And this 7" DEWALT angle grinder weighs 11.6 lbs or 5.3 kgs and with an 8,000 rpm.

Looking at these comparison in sizes, it is really impossible to operate or run these large angle grinders with one hand only compared with a 4" or 5" angle grinders. 😉
Malaking parusa o pahirap sa wrist at braso to handle these large angle grinders with only one hand plus considering the initial torque it carries when you start the grinder.

TO BE CONTINUED.................And thanks for viewing !
