Re: YAMATO 200amp DC Inverter

Hi JohnS,

Yes, even though you are a newbie here at PHM, you will get a discount for the purchase of the YAMATO 200 amp DC Inverter from Industrialsupply143. Just say you are a PHM member. Get in touch with Ms Mimi G or Joseph S. Anyway just look for the thread where their contact nos and new address had been posted, usually in threads concerning this weld machine. πŸ˜‰

By the way welcome to PHM Bro, but can you please introduce yourself first, Introduction Thread under the GAZEBO Forum, so we could know you better, some few words of where you live, your interest, whether in metalworking, woodworking, electronics or cars, or whatever, things like these. Nothing really personal.

CHEERS and enjoy the site. :p πŸ˜€

Re: YAMATO 200amp DC Inverter

what's the wiring requirement of this welder?

for some practical reasons (perhaps lazy), i'd prefer just plugging it in (if possible).

my outlet outside (shared with a few outlets inside the living room which is rarely used - electric fan only) has #12 with 30A breaker.

Re: YAMATO 200amp DC Inverter

Bro, nothing really much with the wiring requirement, you can plug it in any household outlet with 15amps or 20amps capacity but of course with # 12 solid wire. That is how these new IGBT Inverters operates which has become very convenient for DIY welders or perhaps pro welders too.

You are doing fine with your outside outlet specially with the 30A breaker.

The line that I have is stranded. Does this matter?

Re: YAMATO 200amp DC Inverter

The line that I have is stranded. Does this matter?

I'm an architect, not an electrician or EEng, but AFAIK...

Translation in AWG "gauge #" between stranded and solid wires is in terms
of total square millimeters of wire sectional-area, meaning there should be
no difference in the ampacity of #12 THHN stranded and #12 THHN solid
(25-30A at 90 degrees C).*

We already know that #12 wires suffice to power the Yamato DC, based on
both the device's ratings and direct personal experience of several PHM'ers.
Since most power-runs in a typical household are going to be 20A-breakered
with #12 wires (whereas general lighting circuits tend to be 15A, with #14),
a Yamato DC 200A user plugging into a PROPER wall outlet won't likely run
into problems.

However...

If I may comment on your outdoor power circuit:
I feel speccing a 30A breaker for #12 wires is unusual, since #12 ampacity
is already 30A: meaning, the wires can get too hot before the breaker trips
to save the day. In contrast, a 20A breaker willtrip long before the wires
get into real trouble, and hey.... that's why we bother with breakers at all.

IIRC, whenever I've seen a 30A breaker spec for an LPPB, it's in association
with no less than 5.5mm2 wires (aka AWG #10), so perhaps you'll consider
consulting about a potential fire hazard in your outdoor power circuit. Then
again, I don't have all the details on your situation, and there's a factor of
safety normally built into electrical design figures.

*stranded wire is more flexible, and is thus faster to install, which is why a
lot of contractors prefer it. The disadvantages are: that because it's more
flexible, its multiple strands can squish loose at the terminal of whatever
fixture it's attached to, and fall out with potentially-disastrous results, so
extra care has to be put into firm, secure termination; and because it's
multi-strand, it will have spaces between individual strands, meaning that,
for the same sectional area (or AWG "gauge") insulated stranded wire is
thicker overall than solid, which means a conduit of a given diameter gets
stuffed more quickly with strandeds than with solids, so you can wind up
paying more for larger conduits, on top of the higher cost of stranded.

Re: YAMATO 200amp DC Inverter

in line with horge's comment, does anyone have a standard rating/table of wires? perhaps this is a good addition to the forum for reference

Re: YAMATO 200amp DC Inverter

Just Googled the topic and these are what I got, perhaps this could be of help to anyone trying to understand the charts and sizing of wires to be used.
Here are some good reads/information on wiring chart and gauges:

http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm

http://electrical.about.com/od/wiringcircuitry/a/electwiresizes.htm

Offhand...
The links above seem to view wires only as conductors (meaning, just the copper)
rather than as 'construction commodities', (meaning the copper and its insulation
together).

Considering 'just the copper' may be fine for academic discussion of ampacity, but
in real-world applications, ampacity (the safe-amperage limit) is heavily dependent
on the type of wire insulation used, whether TW, THW, THN or THHN:

After all, from a user's POV the "wire" fails when the insulation fails.

Commonly in the Philippines, or at least where proffessionals have scruples, the
indoor spec for residences is THHN-insulated (Thermoplastic High-Heat Nylon)
wire, and when we discuss ampacity it's more useful to refer to manufacturers'
specsheets, which consider insulation-types as well as wire gauges.

An example (online) would be:
http://www.armstrongssupply.com/wire_chart.htm

Again, you want your breaker to trip BEFORE you exceed your 'wire' ampacity,
otherwise, what's the point? If both 'wire' and breaker are rated for 30A, the
'wire' will start to fry its insulation before the breaker can trip and save you.

If the 'wire' ampacity is 30A, you want a breaker rated for less, such as 20A,
so that the breaker trips well before the 'wire' starts getting into trouble. Now,
obviously you DON'T want the breaker rated so far below the 'wire' ampacity
that it annoyingly keeps tripping even on safe loads.

I repeat, I'm an architect, not an electrical specialist.
It's best to consult a REAL electrician or better yet, an electrical engineer.
Stay safe, and I apologize for derailing a thread on the Yamato 200A DC IGBT.

h.

No problem at all bro Horge, spyghost gave a question and a comment still related to the welding machine and proper wire usage and selection, we just responded to help out.
