Re: MIG Welding Newbie

I decided I don't want the positioner to live in any particular table so it's going to be removable. Vise mounted.

First I cut a piece of flat bar

Then I prepare to weld it on the positioner's tube base. Notice the clean metal preparations. It's becomming second nature to me now since I started Mig welding.

On second thought it's better to add some holes so I can also bolt it under a table if a need arise.
I forgot. It's even better to tap the holes ... maybe next time on another WIP.

Welding magnets are great for fab work. I'm confident to buy the ones with the on/off swicth now. I hope Panda starts selling these magnets.

Started primer coating the parts that won't need welding anymore

@Rosy

Bro if you will be building a welding positioner for your table you might want to check this link below.

Thanks a lot JayL for the link., These pics will surely give me ideas on how to attach the welding positioner onto a welding table. :thanks:

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Here. Mine is operational now ... enough for the things I want to do.

the table top rotates - it even micro adjust (LOL ) but needs a 27mm wrench to lock or loosen it.

double nut design

Since the connections are threaded I can build other accessories for it like custom clamping jigs in lieu of the mini table.

I wish it could also tilt front and back but not necessary as the vise it is mounted can rotate. None the less a threaded tilting mechanism can easily be incorporated if a need arise.

Opps error again. I started painting and forgot about the ground path needed. It's good I haven't done all yet. Should be selective painting and probably outer parts only.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

HANEP, Ayos yan at magaling di yan JayL, sure will make welding easier with that positioner, you can simply rotate the table top 360 degrees and back, tilt it in any position if needed and you only stay in one position.

AYOS, congrats for a very nice and useful welding contraption.l

Thanks Rosy. We need more welders and miss Ossie too.

I got a good deal on this auto darkening helmet. Hopefully I have one already ... soon.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

YEAH Jayl, that's a very nice ADH, very sleek too. I like too the Magnetic Ground Clamp, its easier and practical to use for grounding, sticks to all metal at any position, saw that one being used by American welder/sculptor Kevin Caron in one of his welding videos sa Youtube.

Performance Oz. 3M Speedglas are Made in Sweden

I don't know if the ebay seller had shipped the helmet yet. He's not responding to my messages. Maybe he had a change of heart. LOL

None the less if not sent then I'll file a claim and later buy a Miller.

Most probably this one. Made in Korea

The Northern ADH is doing fine basically. Hmmm you got me thinking. Maybe I better use the budget and buy a spool gun instead ... we'll see.

Glad you could drop by and hopefully you can do it more often .... LOL

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

learning continues ... I decided to go for the thinner metals first

building some wall shelves while I'm at it ... fabricated and tack welded

1.2mm square tubes but undersized to 0.90mm

This is what happened on first full weld run

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Too much heat .. no problem it's a mig welder so I can just turn the voltage down a bit and patch the holes

not pretty but a solution

then the grinding

I still can't get the proper settings so I decided to try tack welding style .. but this style is usually reserved for very very thin sheets. No holes this time

I was running 0.030 inch wire welding 0.9mm square tubes ... I could have reloaded with the thinner 0.023inch wire and made everything easy but what's learning without mistakes ... we want the bad results to show out too.

I continued with 0.030 inch wire and left the WIP in lieu of scrap practice. I need parameters for the correct welding wire speed and voltage. I also need to know the proper travel speed. Gun angle is standard at 10 degrees or 45 degrees for corner joints.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Here are some scrap practice results ....

I'll have to find a way to steady my mig gun hand .. this will reduce the waviness. Maybe a better ADH will help .. one that will allow a very clear view of the weld puddle itself.

Thin metals are harder to weld because of burn through. It needs a weaving side to side movement between the metals to be joined in order to avoid it. Having the correct welder settings but welding straight in between the joints did not work for me thus the holes. This is not a problem I encountered while welding thicker metals wherein I can just do a straight pass even with some slight gaps present.

The shelf base was done ... for sure the next one will be quicker to weld.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

those are pretty neat beads. i just started gasless mig last week and im really having a hard time with penetration vs blowing holes. although i cant complain because im using a really cheapo ozito 120 unit.

btw do you know if i can put ARCO gas in tanks for CO2 or AR? or is there a different kind of tank specific for ARCO? because i found a seller that has 2nd hand co2 and ar tanks, but i dont know if i could store ARCO in either one of them.

My guess is yes but it's best to ask and confirm from gas suppliers.

I buy my Arco gas from Atgas Traders.

What I know is that my Smith regulator works for Argon or Argon/CO2 mix but won't work with pure CO2.
