Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Do you think the total weight of the welder and the tank is heavier than the steel cabinet i got from you? The casters i got are hard to start because they are too small. But once moving they are ok. I would get the 3" or 4" if i were to redo the stand but since its a cabinet i will stick to what i have.

I think the tank distance is alright, your tank does not produce heat anyway so i think its enough space.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Jay, could you double check if it is an intake fan as I believe those kinds of cooling are for exhausts. For intake cooling the more room the better.

You're right Jarod. I just fired it now. It's an exhaust.

3" clearance ok?

By the way my original plan was to put several drawers on the cart. Now I'm thinking to just leave the lower bottom for a chop saw storage. The new saw has no place to live ... LOL

You have no choice .. I doubt if you can remove those wheel bases intact the way you full Mig welded these to the movable cabinet base .... LOL

I'll check Timb's caster first before I decide. The Wip still in it's infancy. I can easily still convert this to a chop saw stand .... hahahhahhahahaha .. just toying with the idea while I was looking at the dry fit.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

I use air die grinders to grind the tack welds in preparation for full welds ...

I use it too to prep the metals prior to Mig Welding ... a Mig requirement.

I then use flap discs for final grinding .. lesser dust. It seems that grinding stones add a lot to the dust thus more messy.

This metal marker is one of the best I have so far. Wypo holder with round soap stones. The stones can be sharpened using a pencil sharpener.

Cost a few $ only

Too bad some of the stones got wet and broke. None the less I can still use these when dried completely.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Moj thanks for dropping by and helping on the tank fit up. F#*%$! heavy tall tank.

I was thing about your suggestions to lower the cart's center of gravity by using S supports. However today I made actual measurements and found that due to the caster rotations installing S supports would make the cart very wide.

Look at this mock up. How about if I add another 3 inches to the rear width. Just additional 1/2 x 1/2" square tubings ( bringing rear total width to 20" ). The rear casters will now offset a bit. Instead of lowering the whole cart I will lower the tank's center of gravity only.

This is one option but I would be happier if I can find Mag Wheels for the rear end.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

How do you intend on lowering the tank? separate frame?

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Looks like the way to do it since it's how the flooring will be mounted on the square tubes.

The casters are like 3.5" high so probably lower the tank up to 1 1/2" height from the ground. 1" could be better.

Space constrictions is always a problem and a delicate balancing act when adding something to the shop. . If I have space as wide as bro Rosy I'll probably build a welding cart as big as a small Suzuki carrier. LOL

Bro JayL,

If you have time try visiting HANS TOOLS sa Shang, Mandaluyong, I was there a few Sundays ago and was able to find very good and really heavy wheel casters, rubberized or steel wheels for your convenience. They also sell separate rubber wheels with 10" diameter with rims, maybe you can just fabricate a heavy duty round bars for the two rear wheels and weld it on/in your cart. 😀

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

@ Rosy ... I am thinking wheels will be sturdier than casters for the rear . What is your opinion bro? tks

The maximum cut height the 12" Makita LC 1230 can make. Around 3 inches.

Backup ... for more cut height 14" abrasive chop saw

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

The tubes are only 1.5mm thick. Too lazy to reload the welder with the proper 0.023" wire so am currently using the larger diameter 0.030" wire.

If I weld straight with this 0.030" wire then I will usually get a burn through. For now I just do tack weld style treating the tubes like sheet metal. Anyway the welds will be grind ed later.

Tack welded the upright support. Too tired to full weld it now. Mistakes can be made when tired so it's best to do this tomorrow so it can be aligned properly as well.

If I don't find a surplus metal drawer for this cart then the Bosch chop saw can live under the Mig welder.

The purpose of these builds is to make the shop more efficient. While doing this WIP all tools get scattered and difficult to find. Slowly I will organize this by building this cart, a welding table, a welding cart, a chop saw station as well as a movable clamps station. Probably it's best to keep all electrical cables and air hoses overhead too.

Huh ..... at the rate and phase I'm going I don't know how long it will take but slowly for sure there will be improvements.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

This is how I plan to full weld the upright support to make sure these are at right angles.

I wish the clamp was 3 Axis ( xyz )
