Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Jay knowing you, you will avoid buying used metal. But how come those square bars are so badly rusted?

Surface rust only. Probably because it was raining when these were delivered. However it's normal also when these get stored. It goes off automatically when being used and rust sticks to the gloves. One reason why gloves don't last long.

Edit :

I did cut some stock today. I noticed that I needed a bit more cleanup than the last steel batch I picked up. I am making a mental note to request newer steel on my next order.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Metal time again ....

Cutting tubes to manageable lenght

Here is where the Bosch abrasive chop saw excels ... not even the Makita dry cut saw will beat it on this aspect. Rough cutting stock to shorter lenghts .... very fast. No use to push a tool over it's limit when another one can do the job better and faster.

Production shops usually don't do this but I like to consider the setup I'm building as more of a custom works one. Thus am a bit more meticulous. I deburr the edges clean ... also am too careful that nothing binds up the dry cut saw blade later as I don't have a backup blade.

( Tip ... keep your tool rest as close as possible to the grinding wheel and adjust it accordingly as the wheel becomes smaller )

These gloves are cheap and good. Very useful when handling rusty metals saving the better gloves for the detail work.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Making sure the dry cut saw is square at 45 degrees ... the built in angle pointer is accurate to the dot but no harm to always double check when the fence is adjusted.

Having done quite a few cuts already using this saw I'm now more confident to make short cuts like letting it cut at maximum capacity thus saving setup time.

The upper floor to house the mig welder is 1 1/2" longer relative to the lower part of the base.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Moji .... you are very familiar with this part and issue. You started it ..... LOL 🙂

Question is to widen the wheel base or no need?

I am tempted to widen and lengthen the cart but I know it will defeat my original plan. The only thing controlling me to do this is the thought that I need a chop saw stand and a welding table too. Space will be a premium.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

My opinion is still to widen the wheelbase as much as you are willing to go. Unless you are getting a smaller tank anytime soon..

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Jay, I think that as long as you lower the center of gravity on that cart, it won't topple over.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

why do you need to widen the wheel base width Jay? think of it this way, if you put wheels on the tank will it topple? same lang yan, just make sure the tank is secured and the current wheel base should be fine. But then again, building a new more robust cart would be a better option... for me (daan ko na yan?)

LOL ... I'll' just lower the tanks center of gravity.

Really Timb I don't know how to fit all these carts, table and what not on my limited space so as much as possible I want these as small a footprint as I can make possible.

I'll continue the build and when it comes time for the wheels install I'll do a test drive first before fully welding the under chasis.

Coming Oz. Just preparaing the stocks as I don't want to weld piece by piece anymore but rather do it in batches. Cut, Weld, Grind, Paint .... hirap magpapalit palit ng safety gadgets pag pa isa isang process.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

I got the rear wheel shaft ... 5/8" tool steel. Will be mounted using angle bars.

The front casters dictate the height of the rear wheels .... 3 1/2" high.

Would probably go for a narrow base setup ...... wider is better but

This is a very good tool for measuring angles

angle transferred to the saw ..
