Re: MIG Welding Newbie

@ Armand and Jon

Thanks for the encouragements bros. Will try my best to improve my welding skill. There are a lot of mistakes due to self study only. It is still advisable for our younger ( more energetic ) members interested in welding to at least take some formal lessons to get a head start in this hobby. If not DIY still works. Lots of resources on the web to get started.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Correct me if I'm wrong but what makes MIG welding more attractive for me is it can be done with one gun supplying the gas and filler automatically. Stick welding is cheap but not takes more hours cleaning. TIG is very fine and but demands more on some aspect like hand coordination, etc. I think MIG bridges both worlds.

If I could just use one word to describe Mig compared to Stick and Tig then I would choose the word EASIER.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Mig Gel ... helps contain gun nozzle spatter buildup and facilitates easier cleaning

Mitutoyo combi squares are great but this Showa engineer's square is a better bang for the buck. Highly recommended ... get yours now at Panda. A well balanced square at a great price.

Adding another 1 x 1 " square tubing to lower the Tank to the target height .... 1" above ground.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Very low center of gravity for the tank

the rear wheels will be mounted using angle bars

I had a 1/8"" distortion in the left side of the base. Newbie error in heat handling. I managed to correct it but I still have around 1/16" left. Enough so that the caster is slightly raised above ground. If this is not resolved once the cart is loaded then I will have to shim the left caster.

Casters tack welded for dry fit up

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

I have to do something about this electric chair look. Ossie had suggested an angled platform for the welder. It would have looked great but I do use the welder for table height and ground welding. I reckon an angled placement will put strain on the gun connection when doing ground level welding thus I chose the straight configuration.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

This will be for power tools ..... mostly grinders.

The original design incorporates electric as well as compressed air supplies. The idea was I could just pull the cart and plug it to the power sources ( electrical and air ) and make it the power distribution center for angle and die grinders. Will revisit this again if it's really a good idea or better just leave the cart alone ... LOL

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Flooring for the gas tank.

I decided to give the cart added weight since the rear center of gravity is very low. I chose 5mm sheet metal for flooring. Heavy.

I dry ran the cart and it's very easy to move. This was due to the larger rear wheels.

Building a jig to enhance the dry cut saw's cutting versatility.

I'd cut this in the center when welded already. Would want to use the dry cut saw in order to see how a steel blade will behave cutting such a profile. However I still don't have a backup blade yet so up till now I still baby sit the Makita. However I intend to push the Makita blade to it's very limit once I get hold of the Freud Steel Demon I ordered.

For now I'll use an abrasive saw to cut this jig in half.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

I had a problem Mig welding this. I can't get the gun nozzle in to get proper wire stick out. Mig welding sounds like a drive by automatic fire shooting. LOL. Looks like I have to stick weld this later.

Anyway I tried the jig. Makes positioning cuts easier for the saw blade to penetrate.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Not much done today ... just the tank flooring

I changed welding style to short burst high penetration . Just like tacks but bigger. I could not afford metal distortions at this stage of the WIP.

done or I carn just add some more welds on the corners to further strengthen it

Rear ground clearance is slightly less than an inch. Very stable and safe. In case any of the wheels break then the cart will not tumble.

The drawback is that the cart can travel only on flat surfaces. Anything above one inch is considered a travel path obstruction.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

For critical welds like this rear wheel shaft support I usually clean the metals well before welding by using a wire wheel.

I also don't grind critical welds except when absolutely necessary. Opps wrong wire starting position ... hole burned on the tubing. Welding thicker to thinner metals my wire strike and weld positioning is on the thick one first then going a bit to the thin one then back and forth. I keep the ground as close as possible too.

patched the hole up and grind ed but still had a pinhole left

another pass then grind

a quick pass on the flap disc later and this previous hole will be flush with the tube again.

Dry Fit

I will swap this tank for the next size down when the gas is consumed.
