Re: MIG Welding Newbie

How long kaya before I need to primer it .. I need a few more things to weld pa kasi. Do I need to sand it down also after rust converter?

Doon sa Turco thread parang me nakita pa ako na need to wash it with water ... but not sure if I want to do this.

Thanks.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

It is said in the instructions to wash it off with water, this is i think to stop the reaction of the chemical when the rust has been converted already. you have compressed air anyway so you can dry it off easily. you can spray primer as long as the metal is thoroughly dry.

oo nga brushing na nga lang...

i think it is 24 hrs, but not sure...
there will be flaking, that's where sanding is needed, removing the converted rust.
no need to wash na, since you are going to sand it naman to bare metal,
then go na sa primer...

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

A couple of weeks ago I used it to remove the rust on our school's drums (snare & bass).
I forgot to remove a metal scarper that was soaked in the rust converter. The next day yung scraper pwede nang feeler gauge sa sobrang nipis.

@jay,

kidding aside, next build mo dapat eh "rust converter room"...yung walang oxygen brader...ang culprit kasi eh oxidation..kaya nagra rust..haha..i wonder paano gawin yun! hehehehe

great build bro..thanks for the step by step wips..except wala ng pics habang ginagamit si miller!

sarap siguro may mig!

good day ahead...mejo no time to visit the site..mega busy sa work.

keep safe always.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

just curious jayL, at mga brad,

since i-sand naman or grind naman yung peice to bare metal...

this is what i did before, wipe the metal with kerosene or laquer thinner then proceed immediately to the primering.

i put only rust converter to the areas severely affected by the rust.

and since the project, wont be expose to elements most of the time, why put rust converter ?

just curious lang mga brad, hope you don't mind...

Actually bro all the metals used passed the bench wire wheel during fabrication before welding. Medyo malinis na talaga. So most probably this particular WIP can go directly to primer stage using the lacquer thinner wiping technique. The same I did with the compressor tank I stripped and re painted.

However I was talking to Moji the other day and he informed me that he gets better paint adhesion results when using rust converter first so I gave the WIP a single pass. I reckon he has a point too. The WIP now looks totally rust free although it will need light sanding. Minute rust formation have turned into flakes.

Let's hear also what Master Ryobi has to say because I believe he also use Bronco prior to primer painting metal. For me I'm satisfied with the Bronco results and in fact have now switched from Turco brand .. so far.

None the less the suggestion to put rust converter on highly rusted areas only looks to be very good and practical as well. Less work.

I hope Moji chimes in on the better adhesion point too.

Bro ... yes I can say Mig Welding is fun specially for a newbie turned novice to use. It is a lot easier to control than stick specially on thin metals like the 1.5mm square tubes I am using.

OT .. I think you can get a Quick Change nut for your Metabo grinder. My grinder came with 2 nuts ... a regular one ( needs spanner ) and one for quick change.

Yes bro this is what I'm going to use.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Some pics to document the after Bronco Rust Converter application

Grinders wire wheel reloads

These wheels sometimes kick hard when it hits something like sharp corners. The non locking paddle switch ( dead man style ) angle grinder is the best to use as you can just release the switch and it will reduce speed thus containing the kick. Press the paddle to resume full speed wire wheeling again.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Here I run the wire wheels ...

I wanted to power wash it but then on second thoughts just wiped it down with lacquer thinner ...

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Preparing to spray the WIP with primer

I've had this old school gun for quite sometime now. I'm going to try it for the first time. It is loaded with the proper primer tip size 1.8 mm. Usually primer guns will have 1.8 to 2.2 mm tip size.

Pressure will not be set at the gun itself but rather at the compressor side. Open the gun controls to the max , depress the trigger fully then set the air regulator pressure to 50 Psi. The gun will be fed using a 3/8" diameter hose.
