Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Hi there Jay

Nice set up there on the mig and you finally got the right socket for the Miller. Very nice practice welds too, ilang pasada pa yan, kuha mo na yan, wow ang sarap sigurong i glide yung welding torch.

What will be your first welding project or projects using that miller mig Jay, he he he he, if you don't mind may I suggest one or two that will also be beneficial to you, it's like you are practicing with that mig and yet finishing something I know will be very useful to you and your shop.

Jay, may I suggest buying a 4' x 8' steel matting and some 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" angle bars, then maybe you can make a wall hanger that you can also attach to your wall by some expansion bolts. The size of your wall hanger steel matting will depend on your personal specs and needs. This will just be perfect for your tools and will be also saving some flooring space. Making this steel matting hanger will not be hard, just cut the matting to 4' x 4' square or 4' x 6' or you may use the whole matting. Then with the angle bars you can fit and cut to your size specification you choose, weld the corners and then fit the matting inside, by then you can continue spot welding with your mig, na papractice ka na and yet you are finishing something very useful to you without wasting the mig wire and the gas, diba ? :p

Now if ever you do this project, you can practice again by doing your own version of the tool hooks and hangers that I made for my steel matting hangers, no waste really on the consumables, everything will be put into good use. 😉

Maybe another simple project could be 3' x '4 welding table somewhat similar to Ryobi's table, I'm pretty sure making a welding table is a must have when one uses now a mig welder. It will be easier on the aching back instead of working always on the floor.

Suggestions only Jay ha, if you think it's not yet time for it then you can scrap it, ok

Again, enjoy your mig welder and keep on practicing. 😀 :hysterical:

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Thanks Rosy.

How much did you budget for the tool hanger project. I still have a vacant wall and I'm not soo keen drilling lots of holes in the wall to hang things. A frame such as you suggested will require very minimal holes and would be easier to manage.

I'd probably plan the welding cart too. I have to marry the Mig welder and the gas tank or else it will always be a pain to set it up specially if it's just a quickie quickie task.

LOL ... next time I'll get a tripod just like what you suggested and probably a better point and shoot cam. Something not overly expensive for but works better shooting Wips in a rusty, dusty or oily environment.

Thanks a lot V.

From the initial test runs I'd say that I did get my money's worth for the amount of welder that Miller gave.

@ Jay,

I cannot anymore remember the exact expense for the wall hanger project since it was done a year and a half ago together with the metal shelve project if you have noticed them in the photo of my tool room. Actually the wire matting was just an excess of another project I did, a duplex dog cage that can be dismantled easily because major parts were just bolted together. So kung baga nagka halo halo na mga materials na binili ko nuon. :p

But anyway I just passed by the hardware store where I buy my metal for welding. Bought some cut pieces of stainless steel flat bars, 1/8" X 2" X 24", then one piece 5/16" round bar and some stainless steel welding rods, I'll be doing additional hooks again but now in stainless steel, I'll see how it will come out naman.

Also got some price quotations for the wire matting and the angle bars needed for the hanger project if ever you push thru with it, at least we know the current price now of these materials. I just don't know the prices of these metal sold in your place.

Here are the price quotations:

1. WIRE MATTING
4' x 8' -------370.00/pc
6' X 10' ------- 585.00/pc or roll
6' X 20' ------- 1,170.00/pc or roll

2. ANGLE BARS
1 1/2" X 1 1/2" X 1/8" -----300.00/pc
1 1/2" X 1 1/2" X 3/16" -----china steel-----330.00/pc. this one is aserado at makunat
------local steel------455.00/pc

3. FLAT BARS
1" X 1/8" ------120.00/pc
1" X 3/16" ----160.00/pc

2" X 1/8" ------350.00/pc
2" X 3/16"-----390.00/pc

I guess with these quotations you'll be able to gauge the amount you are going to spend for the project using the actual prices in your place. 😉 :cheerleader:

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

@Jon I was surprised too at the ease the MIG welding machine lays out the clean beads ( no slag and very minimal spatter ) specially for a newbie's first pulls of the gun trigger.

Unlike Stick( constant current ) Mig machine uses constant voltage. It does adjust itself automatically even if the arc gap changes a bit ( usually between 1/4 and 3/8" ). The automatic feeding of the welding wire is also very convenient for the welder. I reckon it will boil down to welder's gun angle and travel speed more than anything else to get better looking weld beads. Welder has Autoset too. Just feed in the metal thickness and it will adjust welding parameters by itself.

This metal gauge is very useful.

The MIG welder in the hands of creative metal workers like Obi Wan Ryobi and Ossie will produce wonders.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

I proceeded to observe mandatory safety procedures when handling high pressure gas cylinders. Until I can build a cart to hold the gas tank I had to securely chain it to the wall when in use. It is not as dangerous as Oxygen and Acetylene tanks as it holds only inert gas. However the 2000 psi inside the tank can still wreck havoc if it accidentally falls off and breaks the gas valve. It will fly like a rocket.

This safety precaution will also let me leave the regulator installed on the tank and not be worried much after a days work. Setting up equipment takes time and if it can be left standing still till the next session then its less hassle.

I just love this stuff. It makes tightening of cables and chains easier. Don't even know what its called.

Re: MIG Welding Newbie

Ninong, is that an eye expansion bolt that you fastened into the wall? Where and how much does each one cost? What are the dimensions as well? Thanks!
