What i only have is small a 0.5 HP compressor mostly to drive my nailers and occasionally inflate a flat tire.

I am long considering getting another for painting. Its a hassle to borrow one even from my own brother who owns a talyer..borrowing is easy but you will always hear.."isoli mo na lang agad pagkatapos kasi busy yan sa shop"...but more importantly... the hassle of getting it from there and bringing it back. His painter guys cant tell the difference though and as long as they are working, tuloy lang ang trabaho. Its not their job they say to repair these compressors.

Any good brand locally available?

We have powercraft, vespa and how about the hard to find campbell hausfeld? Me local distributor ba?
Is 2HP ok enough?

I would have preferred the HVLP's but i dont know if they are available locally and i know they are 2x if not 3x more expensive. but their size is definitely wow. you can tuck them in a small corner.

thanks

Re: Air compressors

I've had a Vespa 1 HP for 2 years now and so far it has been holding up well. I also purchased another Vespa 2 HP model for our shop. Both have the same 88 liters capacity. The 2 HP model just charges faster.

I have also looked at Ingersoll Rand, Campbell Hausfeld, General and other US marketed compressors in the 220V 5HP 60-80 Gallon models ( single stage / single phase) . Prices are ok but shipping is the deal killer. Bulky and very very heavy.

I've also looked around for second hand compressors with bigger capacity. Some surplus Japanese and even a DeVilbiss 5 HP. They wanted exorbitant prices for these in the 30-60K range.

Vespa has a 5 HP model but I think it's expensive too for a Chiwanese made unit ( around 40-45K ).

Upon further analysis my 1 HP Vespa cannot cope up with my HVLP spray gun ( Finex 3000 ) if I am going to paint say for example a whole car. What I can do is put another Vespa 2 HP in series with the 1 HP to get enough air volume movement. Such a setup would cost around 25K. 176 liter capacity @ 3 HP total.

I have not done this yet but because I don't have the urgent need. I'm still hoping to find a good price on a larger surplus compressor.

Hope this helps.

Re: Air compressors

@ V

Good info on air compressors.

http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4901&highlight=show+air+compressor

It just crossed my mind but might as well say it. If you plan to use Quick Disconnects for your fittings then buy Milton Brand ( US Made ). The KYK and the Lotus etc... sold in malls do not last long enough. You can find Milton connectors in LYS and Yale Hardware. Cost a tad more but will last longer.

Re: Air compressors

Violaine,

I saw an HVLP air compressor by MAXSELL completer with the sprayer, So far ive only seen it on display at Wilcon Depot Libis (the large shop along libis, they have a smaller shop on the opposing side of the street)

And initially i was wondering why it was so bloody small until i read your post :). I forget how much it was though....

I just dont know how well it works.

Re: Air compressors

I have a 2hp direct drive Vespa. Its been ok but I haven't used it extensively for quite awhile. Funny that you guys should be talking about this because I was just thinking to buy or "trade-up" (sell old buy new) to a bigger one. The reason is because a friend of mine is going to lend me a venturi vacuum pump which is driven by an air compressor so I can do some vacuum bagging.

Does anyone have the latest Vespa prices?

Re: Air compressors

i will be referring to my post above about the maxsell hvlp. Hindi pala maxsell yun its MAXTOOLS. these brands are confusing... like how maculloch took dewalts color scheme..

i saw it again. its 6,599 they call the product porta-lite. it actually looks cute.. I wonder if HVLP can spray paint that are thicker (not thinned down too much)

Re: Air compressors

Drain the oil and use SAE30 to fill it up. Oil level should be a little more than 1/2 in the sight glass ( from manual) . For me I usually add a bit more up to 3/4 of the sight glass.

The unit's standard pressure is 100 PSI but you can adjust it up to 115 PSI.

Don't forget to clean the air filters and drain the accumulated water always.

Hope this helps.
