Re: Air compressors

Thanks, Jay, Rosy, and Joey.

Yes, I've read all the threads, actually. But the discussions are mostly among people who already know how use a compression and understand how it operates.

I'm coming from zero. Don't even know what a quick connect is. Nor why the tank can have water. Nor why there has to be a water separator. Nor why some sprayguns have the paint tank above the nozzle while some have it below. Nor what paints to use. Nor if paint has to be thinned and, if so, by how much. Nor how to clean the gun and hose after use...

Man, I'm a real green guy when it comes to spray painting.

I guess we all start that way.

Looking forward to guidance from the experts here.

I'll try to answer your question on water separator, Ding.

Air contains water vapor. Water also goes into the tank, and eventually along with the air that's used by your spray gun or your nail gun. In the case of the latter, water will accelerate rusting inside the gun. That's why you need to put 1 drop of machine oil in the intake port of your air tools once a day. A water separator is not a must-have for air tools.

When using the compressed air, water condenses on the insides of the hose. Imagine those tiny droplets combining into big drops and then suddenly gets expelled out of your spray nozzle. It might be OK if you're using water-based paint, but it will be a disaster on your WIP if you're using oil-based material.

I've read somewhere that the separator will be more effective if you put a few feet of hose between it and the compressor. I don't fully understand why it is so. Maybe the water condenses if pressure is released? Just like how ice crystals form when you open the cap of a super-cold bottle of soft drink.

Re: Air compressors

me too, am planning to upgrade my 3/4 hp compressor...

since nag start ka lang naman...
buy muna the cheapest spray gun...baka sirain mo lang.

i remember myself buying a spray gun without knowing how to use it...
nakapag spray naman ako.
the next time i use the spraygun, wala nang lumalabas na paint, barado pala.

learn and practice ka muna the basics...

This is what I did too ... learned spray painting using an Iwata W-71 clone and a Vespa 1 HP compressor. That was maybe 3 or 4 years ago and I've upgraded to a better compressor and guns now.

Re: Air compressors

Good advise and answers, everyone.

I will probably go over to Panda one day and get a cheap gun and hose. As I gain more experience, will look into the basic mods Sonny has done: easy access drain plug, modified belt tightening mechanism, air/water separator, quick release plugs.

As you may have noticed, I have been posting questions, too, in another forum. There, a LVLP gun was recommended to me. Is the capacity of my compressor too low for an HVLP? Or am I wrong in understanding that low CFM/pressure requires LVLP?

Re: Air compressors

Unless you are going to paint stuff the size of a car then you might also want to look at the mini HVLP guns. Consumes less air than the full sized guns. This one below is my preferred gun when spraying wips the size of a chop saw stand, welding table, shelves, carts, motorcycles etc...

The paint cup is a bit small at 250cc but I've upgraded it to a 600cc 3M PPS system now.

This gun falls within the 2 HP 88 liters Vespa firing range.

Re: Air compressors

These are my small compressors, a SPRAYIT Diaphram compressor for my Air Brush, from THOMAS Industries, USA, but upgraded it to a 2 HP VESPA compressor to have more power., Plus use this also just to air my vehicle tires. Anyway I have plans too to upgrade and buy a belt driven 3 HP VESPA Compressor from Miss Mimi of Industrialsupply143.

Why a 3 HP compressor ?, well aside from spray painting use, I can use it also for some air tools in the future, as recommended by bro JayL. :2thumbsup:

Re: Air compressors

I see that spray guns are also specified by the size of the nozzle; e.g. 1.0mm, 1.4mm...

What does the size mean? Diameter of the hole? What is the size in relation to the performance of the gun? Is there a table somewhere I can consult to know what size is used for what application?
