going back to the tweak. the most difficult thing to do on the compressor is adjusting the belt. it is also one of the main causes of noise and vibration. I did try to tighten the belt and in doing so saw the motor and pulley to be out of square. hmmm, no I know why there is so much noise (though not loud).
first I saw the pulley locking screw is made of the ordinary ones you find (maybe the cheapest) and it is terribly bent out of shape.

I removed it and replaced it with a stainless equivalent.

after an hour of trial and error, I gave up and thought of a better way to tighten and align the belt.
I first drill two 5/16" holes on the adjustment bar underneath the motor.

then mounted two scrap piece of angled bar (forgot the term) to align with the holes I made.

added the screws and nuts...

now it aligns much easier and gets the belt tightened to previously unachievable tightness.
I still want everything to align perfectly, but for now I have to wait till Friday to borrow the laser level... 😀

Nice mod Timb. I bet you can align the motor now without much pulling and pushing. 🙂 Have you found the replacement belt too?

How long are the adjustment screws?

The stock screws on the mounting base are also crap. I broke one in half while aligning my compressor's motor.

i got a few hits pertaining to compressors on his board. very informative i should say.

now, another question of my own. does hp rating of the compressor relate to the cfm?

i am planning on getting vespa from ey as suggested by JayL. my target use of the compressor is air tools - 1/2" drive impact wrench, 1/2" or 3/8" ratchet, die grinder, and sander.

- is 2 hp enough for this purpose? i bet what's needed for air tools is something more that what is required.
- what wiring should i consider for powering the compressor? gauge? and breaker rating? obviously i'll be lining up a new one for this

I would not go lower than the 2 HP Vespa and bump it up from the factory 100 psi pressure setting to 115 psi then regulate &/ filter ( moisture ) at 90 psi output. Enough to drive the Impact Wrenches and Air Ratchets. The air die grinder and sander would be another story. These would run but at some point in the job you'll have to wait for the compressor to fully charge to get the tool's full working capacities.

You can cheat though in order to get more run time. Wait for the compressor to charge and just before it reaches the cut off point start the tools and run the compressor at 100% duty cycle till it can't cope up anymore. Then wait again and repeat the cycle. That's what I do till I get another to 2 to 5 hp compressor to connect in series with my current one.

average CFM (cubic ft/min) 25% duty cycle @ 90 psi

1/2" drive impact wrench - 4.5 CFM
1/2" or 3/8" ratchet - 4 CFM
die grinder - 6 CFM
sander - 7 CFM

*Those are estimate CFM ratings only. Check your tools for actual CFM.

Selection a compressor will depends on how will you use the tools. business or hobby?

If hobby for sure one at a time lang ang gamit mo ng air tools. You can use, for example:

Working pressure: 85-115 PSI
Tank Capacity: 115 Liters
Motor Speed: 1100 RPM

If you will use Vespa check mo na lang yun compressor rating sa nameplate that will satisfy your requirement.

Also critical din yun air tools working pressure dapat pasok din sa working pressure ng compressor mo.
