Re: all about Air Compressors

Back to the 2HP Vespa.

What is a permissible run out tolerance value for a motor pulley? I read around 0.28mm at the highest point. Lowest is 0.

Pulley size = 129mm and Rotational Speed = 1,720 RPM

Owyn, Guad, Guys .... ?

Thanks

On the contrary do you have an opinion on this Timb. I was with the idea this is territory for guys doing mostly rebuilds like OWWM.

Naw, I reckon on pulley systems like those on Vespa isn't critical. minimal is always better as it gives better efficiency though :dog1:

Re: all about Air Compressors

Honestly Jay, I think the 0.28mm run-out is way smaller than any probable thickness inconsistency on the belt itself. The pulley mechanism is way forgiving given its nature to have a rubber belt and slack.

Yes looks like it's ok. I'll check the pump fly wheel run out next.

I finally got the gun performance I was after (since owning this Sharpe FX-3000 for more than 2 years now ). This gun is an air hog. It's not a good choice to even consider if the compressor to drive it has less than a 60 Gallon tank ( I literally mean tank volume not high cfm as it requires 9.5 cfm@ 29 psi only ). Otherwise its' really a very good gun.

FX-3000 is loaded with a 1.4mm tip. Currently on the wish list is a good clear coat gun with a 1.3mm tip to pair with it.

Still undecided whether I need to clear coat the compressor tank. Paint durability might be a reason. Looks ok with just base coat as this will not even stay clean for long once it starts it's back up duty.

I hope the reverse flow check valves arrive by first week June. I can't even hook up the Speedaire and this one together without the check valves since they don't operate at the same max pressure. Speedaire is 135 psi and the Vespa is 115 psi. I can bring down the Speedaire to 115 psi but it would degrade overall performance.

@Jarod . I've decided to reserve the blue color for the welding cart and table.

Re: all about Air Compressors

I was about to sleep but decided to check the Vespa pump that just got new oil. I was surprised to find that there was a pin hole oil leak right in one of the a hole wall where the pump gets bolted to the tank. Must be a defect in the casting.

I can weld using a cast iron rod, seal it then drill the hole again. However since oil pressure inside the pump is not that high I decided to try cold welding first.

Here's are some pics

Tomorrow I'll drill the hole again. Hope this easy fix works but if not then it's hot welding.

I could have chosen regular JB-Weld but JB Water Weld is more specialized in plugging leaks. It can be used on fuel tanks as well.

Re: all about Air Compressors

The JB Water Weld is now cured and hard. Time to drill the hole.

Offset the hole a bit so as to avoid the part where the pinhole leak is located.

Cold welding worked and oil leak is now under control. Mounted the pump to the tank. However for added protection I sealed this with gasket maker before bolting.

Re: all about Air Compressors

I removed it and replaced it with a stainless equivalent.

after an hour of trial and error, I gave up and thought of a better way to tighten and align the belt.
I first drill two 5/16" holes on the adjustment bar underneath the motor.

then mounted two scrap piece of angled bar (forgot the term) to align with the holes I made.
.

This mod by Timb is a very simple but effective way of adjusting the belt tension on a Vespa 2 HP compressor. Probably in the assembly line they do have a jig to pull the motor to tighten the belt.

Anyway I borrowed Timb's idea and fabricated an add on part to tighten the belt on the 2 HP Vespa I'm rebuilding. Thanks Timb.

Re: all about Air Compressors

Thanks Timb.

It's more like jig. I can even remove it now and it won't make a difference after the belt was tensioned and the motor base bolts tightened.

I was able to get proper belt tension and probably hit it a bit more. There are limitations on the stock belt supplied. It's only now that I looked at it more closely and found it to have uneven thickness and width in some areas.
