It would really depend on the kind of painting appilcation that you need to perform.

smaller tip = thinner paint, touch-ups, small but controllable painting area

bigger tip = thicker paint, shorter time of painting a large area.

Re: Spray Painting Talk

I purchased this generic spray gun in Binondo for around 1K + ( excluding air regulator) . This one is ok with my 1 HP Vespa. I think it's got a 1.5mm tip. I don't even know all the specs because the manual it came with was very confusing.

Nice air regulator.. where did you get that one...

I really hope they sell this in binondo.. I'd be looking for one. I really need one to lessen the pressure for airbrush.. Right now im using 1/4 vespa, couldn't soften it for airbrush.

Anyway, I was also thinking of making a compressor out of a refrigerator compressor.. My friend uses one. He claims its extremely quiet.. I need one like that for the night work..

Re: Spray Painting Talk

Hi fellow PHM, I need a little help.
I recently got hold of a 1/4hp air compressor & planning to do some spray painting for the first time. I have an old paint spray gun that I bought some 6years ago that the painters use in our house when it got renovated. As I checked, it looked ok, and it was cleaned before it was stored. But when I plug it to the compressor, air started coming out of the nozzle even if I haven't pulled the trigger yet, is this normal? Or do I have to get a new spraygun? TIA guys.

Not normal.

Did I got it right that you will be eventually spraying bike parts? Maybe time to get a new gun. Probably a look at the mini guns would be in order. Does not consume too much air, paint cup just right for the job and spray pattern not to wide so more controllable for smaller areas to paint. Saves on paint and thinner wastage too.

A picture of the old gun can help give us a better idea of where the problem might be. Given the lack of information I suspect seal problems but I could be wrong.

Re: Spray Painting Talk

Thanks sir Jay. I'll be painting kitchen cabinets, I'm having a hard time using paint brush with it.
I already tried putting additional O rings and teflon tape on some threads but still a lot of air is rushing out. I even tried filliing the canister with water, it sprayed well, but the air keeps coming out even with the trigger off, making the compressor loose pressure faster. here is the spraygun...

Sorry I think I got it mixed up. Probably it was Ben who wanted to spray bike parts.

Did you try taking the gun apart and overhaul it?

That spray gun design is prone to a lot of over spray. What paint are you going to spray?

Re: Spray Painting Talk

I did took it apart and cleaned it again but still the same.
Since this is prone to over spray, I guess it would be better if I just get a new one. I'm also planning to use it for painting a part of our ceiling. What would be better a gravity type or a suction type gun? Could I get a new one for less than 1K?

Re: Spray Painting Talk

I'm still thinking if I'm gonna use acrylic or lacquer for the cabinets, for the ceiling, just poly.

Then a 1.5 mm tip would be fine. There's a member who posted that he'd have success using a Creston gun on 1/4 HP Vespa if I am not mistaken. Actually it would work but sometimes you just have to wait for the compressor to charge up before you can continue spraying again.

This is what happens to me when I use a 1 HP Vespa and a W-71 Iwata HLVP clone spray gun.
