Re: Spray Painting Talk

ok here it is:
POLY GLOSS urethane spray filler

This one was sprayed with GLENZEN, this product uses no thinner, but the paint guy said that I can thin it up to 10% depends on my gun. Unlike GLENZEN, POLY GLOSS uses a lot of thinner 1:1 ratio (1L spray filler/catalyst mixture to 1L urethane thinner)

Me sanding the fender hehehe!

The place where I work on the car has 1 good and 1 bad: the good was there were almost no dust far from the road but the bad one was too many flying insects of all sorts, some of them diving into the wet primer, ggrrr!

Thoughts about the spray filler: set-up the gun at 25PSI (w/ trigger pressed, plus water separator and about 6 meters of air hose to compensate pressure drop, the longer hose, the lesser pressure reaches to the gun)

poly gloss= gives smoother surface, less orange peel, shinier (parang base coat) but quite harder to sand for a hi-build primer. when I first applied it, it runs! because of more viscosity (more thinner). lots of overspray (regardless of gun's performance) less materials reached the car.

glenzen= excellent high build-up per layer, easy to sand but serious orange peel which is OK for me, when I first applied to it, it didn't run because of less viscosity (lack of thinner) this is my choice but 40 pesos more than poly gloss' 320 pesos, but all of the material was on my car so no wastage.

Re: Spray Painting Talk

How will it be then when you go for clear coat? The insects will create havoc.

Re: Spray Painting Talk

I'll make a giant mosquito net (20 by 12 ft, 6ft high) about a bit bigger than the tent in the photo when the car is ready for base and clear. At first, I'm planning a makeshift booth (and too costly to make) but the dust wasn't the issue, those damned insects was.

Good thing was I was spraying only primer, I'll simply sand it off including the dead insects sticking in the primer!

why not try to source used tarpoline from friends or shops and use them, cheaper and keeps the air circulation low...

Re: Spray Painting Talk

If i use tarpaulin,it can be dark inside and if i make some holes, insects will go in, for me, mosquito nets will be better and cheaper than tarps. I can get many as tarps as I can only if it's election time 😎

BTW katols can be helpful but they're no match for a big mosquitoes (as big as the small icon in your PC's desktop or smileys) and other flying insects, the best thing is defense, wearing thicker and long sleeved shirts and long pants like in the photo, because thin clothing can bite through I've seen it.

Re: Spray Painting Talk

Bro Takernz,

Bro if you are what you say in the pic showed sanding that MB, then I would like to congratualate you for having the courage to do the task you have given yourself. I presume you have done that already with other vehicles coz in my case I chickened out on my intended re painting project a few months back for the hood of my PAJERO since it will be my first re painting project. I did not pushed through coz I might ruin the entire hood painting application. 😮

I hope you don't mind me asking if you could please post pics or tips on the step by step procedure in your total MB body repainting. I would really appreciate it since I will have a guide to somehow follow.

I know that will entails lots of hours of sanding and re applying the masilya and then re sanding again likewise with the spray painting process.

Again congrats and good luck on the project. 😉 :p ALSO THANKS. :thanks:

Re: Spray Painting Talk

Won't those electric type insect repellant gadgets work to drive away the insects?

Brave insects ... don't even mind the over spray. Maybe some Baygon spray inside the mosquito net too before painting .... for added precaution. 🙂

I learn this on YouTube:

no sir, this my first time painting, I've been watching youtube vids for a month before I begin. On youtube type "butlercollision", here, you can learn from them (from body filler application to spraying clears and some tutorials on spray guns), but there are some things that are not in our place or never heard of, e.g. Velcro-backed sanding block. Velcro-backed sandpaper, colorless base coat, polyester glazing putty (we have only acrylic glazing putty). You can ask them if you have youtube acct. they really answer your questions and I've been asking them many times and they still answer but you have to be patient, also read first their comments you might find your answers there as well.

Re: Spray Painting Talk

I would opt for the screen material option. Mosquito coils (katol) and insect killing machines (with UV light) only works almost an arm's length. Since the workplace is on an open area, controlling insect movement is very impossible.

With the screen option, you have a less dangerous working environment as there are no harmful fumes, electric items, not much extra lighting needed as natural light can pass through and you are visible so your love ones can see what you are actually doing just in case you get suffocated, tripped or what.

This may even double as a great hang-put place at night after your project

.....at hindi mainit pa sa loob! wind can go in as well so no need to ventilate but painting a whole car like this, I think I'll put a small exhaust fan to further evacuate the fumes, just on a safe side
