Hi,

I am going to get an air compressor for my garage/workshop. What is a reasonable capacity and brand to purchase.

I will need it for auto car cleaning , ocassional painting and some power tools.

I got quotes for a KCT Dual tank 2HP for 8K while a Vespa 1 HP for 13K.

Kindly provide some input as most of the products I found do not provide important r specs such as cfm, duty cycles etc...

I reckon your experiences will help me better when choosing this tool purchase.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Re: Which is best air compressor to buy

Why is the Vespa 1hp so expensive? I bought my direct drive 2hp for only P5600. This is of course only a small compressor but still 13k seems steep.

The 1 HP Vespa I was quoted was belt driven with twin pistons?

How is the performance of your 1 HP drirect drive?

Re: Which is best air compressor to buy

Hello JayL,

My friends & I have had terrible experiences with KCT air compressors, particularly the KAC-887 and the dual tank models. My unit broke down 5 weeks after I bought it from DIY Shops. The motor gave up again 3 days after the expiry of the 6-month warranty! All this after a total of less than 1 day running time. Now they are charging me PhP3,200 (almost 50% of a brand new unit) to have it repaired!

On top of that the DIY employees were rude the two times they saw me returning the KCT merchandise. It seems "Customer Relations" and "After Sales Service" are totally alien to them.

My friend's KCT air compressor broke down the first time he used it. Another friend eventually sold his KCT air compressor at a loss since it continually broke down & repair costs were piling up. Don't be tempted by their cheap price, the durability sucks.

The Vespa is a much better buy.

Thanks for your input.

Yes I decided to buy Vespa. . In addition I was not impressed by the KCT demo. You really confirmed my initial thoughts on the KCT dual tank model.

Did you put these 2 compressors in series already to have more output?

Yes don't even think about the 1 HP. Go at least 2 HP.

Tried it already, the pressure remains the same.. It only limits run time of the motor, but couldn't run any power tools.. I guess a 2HP upgrade would still be needed.

Yeah most of my air tools need 90 psi as recommended by the manufacturers. However I always want to run these at 115 psi for more oomph. I too need a bigger compressor.

Re: Which is best air compressor to buy

HI JayL,
My post maybe late but somehow I need to share this info for your Vespa purchase. I have used quite a lot of Vespa 1hp-2hp models and I noticed that their later models are using China Heads. You may be able to distinguish them from the Taiwanese heads of Vespa by the shape of the Piston Head base. The China models are now Boxy or are defined at the edges compared to the rounded edge of Taiwan heads. The Piston and compression rings on the Taiwanese lasted longer than the china heads of my units. If you can get Taiwanese better. I hope this helps.

Re: Which is best air compressor to buy

luck would not allow me for months now but my eyes were drooling over a powercraft vertical type compressor i saw on display at tools from us..one of my favorite tool store minus the lack of a dedicated parking space for customers.

can any one please buy this and test it for yourself?

the build looks very decent with a decent price of 18k..

hey Jay, get one for yourself and post a review asap! haha

Hey JayL,

I would like you to tell that you should go for Makita MAC2400 Big Bore because i have already used it before and it's absolutely perfect for garage and other works. Its specs are 2.5 HP electric motor, 4.2 CFM of compressed air at 90 PSI ,1,720 RPM , 12.3 amp rated electric motor and its prons are that it functional oil drain and sight glass add to the overall convenience.

I have also read this guide on internet and found it quite amazing because they have mentioned all the features and specs of the air compressor along with the prices. I hope after reading that your doubts got defenitely got clear.

If you have an oiless compressor I don’t think you have a problem. If it’s a compressor with a crankcase filled with oil, and your garage temps drop to below freezing, you would have a problem at start up with the oil being cold enough to prevent the oil from splashing up onto the cylinder walls. Compressors tend to have fairly primitive oil systems. A 110 volt oil pan heating pad should keep the oil warm enough for start up. Something like this: best air compressor for home garage
