Re: Workshop Safety Work Wears

@moji,

technically, these bacteria dies out in dry environment (metal bars etc)...they love a damp environment but not wet and live below the surface where oxygen is nil or almost zero..and soil is what i am talking about..because in soil, there are lots of living organisms...and for all we know, bacteria are decomposers.

so rusty metals exposed to air wont harbor with them these bacteria..

the tetanus bacteria produces a toxin causing the tetanus...characterized by violent spasms of the muscles and unless patients are treated they die due to spasms of the respiratory muscles...the violent spasms are so painful btw..and can be triggered by noise or even cold air and that is why patients with tetanus are confined ideally in enclosed rooms...i remember when i was rotating at san lazaro hospital, a simple loud hand clapping can trigger the spasms!

yes when exposed to air these bacteria die out but not instantaneously and even if they die and the toxin is ready and already formed, you can still get tetanus.

whats important to ask is...is there a chance the wound was contaminated by SOIL? if yes..give the tetanus toxoid.

hope this helps.

If i understand correctly, rust in itself does not contain tetanus and only if exposed to soil then it becomes susceptible to having the toxin?

Good to know this, as the usual misconception is that rust equates to tetanus right away..

Re: Workshop Safety Work Wears

id rather promote cervical cancer vaccination for your SWMBO's than getting tetanus shots for no reason! yes tetanus shot is cheap..around 50-100 bucks..but you need to pay the doctor's and nurse's fee and the clinic fee and your transpo/gasoline...etc...besides..who likes a needle prick?!

:p

I have stepped unto a nail, about two years ago, I didn't mind it at first. Just washed it with alcohol and burned the wound with fire.. But late in the evening, I felt weird. I went to PGH emergency. The gave some test, and said it tetanus positive. Gave me a skin test of Anti-tetanus. I cheaper ones were allergic to me. Sad. ( cheap ones are around 100- 200php).

But I was advise to buy those high end ones.. I cost around 2k.. That night alone I spent around 4k, including antiseptics, and other medications that are prescribed..

This time, I'd be wearing shoes for safety.. It's cheaper...

Re: Workshop Safety Work Wears

Are there any sources of these gloves locally? I had to make do with one of those loose leather gloves for handling wood. Protects my hands but I need something more snug. The rubberized cotton ones are not hardy enough for my purposes.

Re: Workshop Safety Work Wears

I wonder if shoe makers could also cater to bespoke leather gloves. That would be a great option as it will fit comfortably and at your own design.

Wyler has just a small store front. Not much display but they have stock upstairs in their warehouse. I too had difficulty finding them when I went in their Avenida office.

Re: Workshop Safety Work Wears

Safety equipment in general ... also Top-Rigid in QC (no Peltor though). Has website or get printed catalog from their West 4th address north of Times St. No sign, looks like residence, just past subdivision guardhouse, on left.

Previous thread: Hearing Protection

Wyler is hard to miss, if you take the obvious straightest route to Binondo from QC avoiding Quezon Ave., i.e., Dapitan -- E. Remigo -- T. Mapua. It is at northwest corner of E. Remigo and Rizal Ave.

Re: Workshop Safety Work Wears

I'm also tempted to get one of this now. Today's metal plate pounding ( even with my ear plugs ) left my ears ringing.

Will wait a bit more and see what you can get locally.
