Re: 20 feet GI Pipe Ladder project...re-weld/repair

So these are all pics of only one side of the step ladder and the other side, like what I said are just almost the same so there is no more need to post pic. And of course after the grinding sessions, its gonna be welding time. I just don't know when I will be posting the whole finish re-welds, hopefully soon by the end of this month or early week of May.

Thanks for patiently viewing the pics !!!

Re: 20 feet GI Pipe Ladder project...re-weld/repair

welding galvanized materials is much harder than mild steel.i usually clean the joint with wire brush to remove the coat..or else makikita mo yung weld mo na nakapatong lang sa bakal and no penetration at all..kung makapal naman and no need to worry burning holes, i just simply set my machine to high ampere to burn galvanized coat and penetrate my weld to metal..

sir rosy mas magandang gamitin yung yamato ac mo jan kesa dc..

pls. keep us updated regarding your wips..:pcwhack:

Yes friend bugel , thanks for the tip, I think I did not removed the galvanize coating when I did this many years ago, this ladder was just a good practice then before and just went ahead with it without much thought, basta maka buo lang ng step ladder that will last me a long time.

Bro with regards to using the Yamato AC, I will try both welders, the AC and the DC and find out what will suit me best. Thanks for the tip too ! Actually I used an AC welder for this project, those kind of weld machines that can be purchased in neighborhood hardware store, the cheap ones with all the innards exposed and usually colored brick red. I can't even get right the correct amperage then so pakiramdaman lang and hit and miss ang approach. LOL 😀

Those little gussets look sharp enough to shred a ladder-climber's fingers. 🙂

Re: 20 feet GI Pipe Ladder project...re-weld/repair

Yes bro horge, some edges have become so sharp due to grinding but really I was planning to add small pieces of 8mm round bars sa mga edges ,spot weld the round bar to the main GI pipe and to the edge of the small gussets to cover up the sharp edges. ;):cool01:

I know there will be some additional weight but that is how it is and I think can manage that.

Re: 20 feet GI Pipe Ladder project...re-weld/repair

OK, So this is my set up in the garage, have prepared everything before applying welds little by little to the pipe joints. Process will be kinda slow coz I can only work early morning or late afternoons 'till midnight probably when weather or temperature is a lot cooler. Fan will be on continuously to blow fresh and cooler air and to disperse weld fumes.

I'll also be trying out using the YAMATO AC welder as suggested by bro bugel and see which will be more appropriate during weld applications.

Well its nice to have a can or two of an almost frozen light beer before and during welding, beats the hot temperature and refreshes the drying throat, LOL

Re: 20 feet GI Pipe Ladder project...re-weld/repair

Sometimes when working with pipes, its hard to attach our welding ground clamps if we can't get to the end tip of the pipe or get a firm grip on the metal to assure of continuous flow of electricity during weld time. Just a simple tip here.

If the mouth opening of our clamping device, the ground clamp, can't grip the pipe, get your vise grip or any welding clamp with wider jaw opening and clamp the pipe direct or find something a bit flat connected to the pipe, attach it there and then that is where you can position your ground clamp for good contact with the work piece.

During the preps prior to weld applications, I cut some small pieces of 8mm corrugated bars of about 2" or so in length to weld it to the edges of the small gussets and prevent any eventuality of accidents of being cut.

And this is how this thing will be positioned.

Re: 20 feet GI Pipe Ladder project...re-weld/repair

So its welding time and some images more during the process :

I still would say it was worth doing this project, the torch and stinger holder/stand, very useful indeed, now getting things organized and with a system during weld time.

Just some pics of the welding man in action !! LOL

And can add strength to joint too..sa taas ng hagdan mo na yan kailangan matibay talaga weld nyan..alam mo naman sir pg ng kaka edad na eh medyo brittle na ang mga buto..:p:wheelchair:
Peace..!
