Re: Arc Welding Info

Stick Electrodes

ex.
E6013

E = stick electrode
60 = tensile strength
1 = position
3 = type of material

Ampere rating for electrodes

size of electrode x 1000 with 10% approximation

ex.
1/8 * 1000 = 112.5A ~ 137.5A

Essentials in Welding (things to consider)
Material
Area
Electrode Size
Arc length
Travel speed
Welding Angle

Note
Welding is a big approximation. Be careful not to overload your machine

Tips
It is better to increase cord length (to outlet or breaker) than to increase the length of the welding cable (to electrode holder and or ground clamp)

For portable welding machines, remember to let the unit rest. Using it for a long time (and jobs whose cross sectional area is large and or cutting) to prolong lifespan, the machines like us humans also needs to rest.

Hope this helps maybe. Got this info through experience and of course READING.

Re: Arc Welding Info

nice SMAW, this is a big unit though

Ill try to put some info on TIG later if I still have the energy left.

and miller btw is one of the best if not the best welding machine

Re: Arc Welding Info

Nice to know how to read the E6013.

Thanks Silhouette..

Will try to approximate the approximates,.,hehehe.:p

Re: Arc Welding Info

TIG Welding

-can be used in most kinds of metals
*MS, BI, GI, stainless steel, aluminum, nickel alloy, magnesium, copper, brass, etc. etc. etc.
-high quality and clean weld
-less to no sparks
-no slag residue
-used best in thin metals

Kinds of tungsten rods

Shielding Gas
-shielding gas is used instead of slag in stick welding
-protects weld area from atmospheric disturbance
*prevents contaminated areas or blow holes

Commonly used shielding gas
1) Argon
2) CO2
3) Helium

never use gas that supports combustion like oxygen as shielding gas

Additional Information

Transformer Type (core type) Welding Machine
lesser initial
heavy weight
high current consumption (breaker)
higher voltage fluctuation
less consistent output welding
more sparks
easier to DIY repair or modify
more people knows how to service

Electronics Type (usually inverter type(can reverse holder and ground)) Welding Machine
higher initial
lighter weight
lower current consumption (lower ampere rating 200amps and below can be plugged at house outlet)
lesser to no voltage fluctuation
more consistent output welding
less sparks
difficult to impossible (excluding electronics engineer or similar) DIY repair and modify
lesser people knows how to service

Re: Arc Welding Info

nice tips.. TIG are very versatile and strong mostly used in welding thinner metal tubes like reynolds, 5130 cromo and 7071 like my bike 😉

just do it work it make it!:gun:

Re: Arc Welding Info

The last digit, indicates the type of coating on the electrode and the welding current the electrode can be used with. Such as DC straight, (DC -) DC reverse (DC+) or A.C.
I won't describe the type of coatings of the various electrodes, but will give examples of the type current each will work with.
ELECTRODES AND CURRENTS USED
• EXX10 DC+ (DC reverse or DCRP) electrode positive.
• EXX11 AC or DC- (DC straight or DCSP) electrode negative.
• EXX12 AC or DC-
• EXX13 AC, DC- or DC+
• EXX14 AC, DC- or DC+
• EXX15 DC+
• EXX16 AC or DC+
• EXX18 AC, DC- or DC+
• EXX20 AC ,DC- or DC+
• EXX24 AC, DC- or DC+
• EXX27 AC, DC- or DC+
• EXX28 AC or DC+

Grounding Clamp ( - )

DC Reverse - for low penetration requirement

Grounding Clamp ( + )

AC - Alternation
________

-Reverse polarity or DCEP, electrode positive (REP) - has 10% more penetration than in AC application.

-Straight polarity or DCEN, electrode negative (SEN) - has the least penetration, welds better in thinner metal.

In direct current, electricity always flows from negative to positive. Just like when you turn on your garden hose and the water begins to flow, when you weld with DC, the current flows out of the negative and back into the positive. This makes for a smooth welding current.

In alternating current, the electricity flows back and forth from negative to positive and positive to negative on a sine wave. This makes an erratic flow for SMAW, producing more spatter and a more unstable current. I used AC for welding 6011 for a couple of years. The welds were OK, but give me DC anytime.

Direct current electrode positive (DCEP) is what we used to call reverse polarity. Direct current electrode negative (DCEN) is what we used to call straight polarity.

In DCEP the electricity flows into the tip of the welding rod and concentrates about two-thirds of the heat, which gives good penetration. DCEP is usually used on thicker steels.

In DCEN the electricity flows out of the rod, concentrating about one-third of the heat on the rod. Less penetration makes this a very good choice for thinner steels.
