Re: DIY 3 in 1 Stinger & Torch Holder/Stand

Rare earth magnets are available in Binondo, or if you can find enough defective hardisk drives for their magnets.

Are these available in the bigger diameters too? tks

mga projects na ganito dapat sticky....:thud:

HEHEHEHE,
Hindi naman siguro kailangan timbs, nothing fantastic nor outstanding about this small project, its only a torch or electrode holder stand.

Re: DIY 3 in 1 Stinger & Torch Holder/Stand

Bro JayL, Since you are looking for a large diameter magnet, no need for you to search the Binondo area for one, this just suddenly entered my mind, diba you have a magnetic disc stainless plate( tray ) where you can collect small screws or whatever which I have one too, really very useful, I think its Buffalo brand from USA, maybe if you could buy another one and then use it as your base for your MIG gun, all you have to do is drill some holes on the stainless plate and attache your fabricated holder stand on the plate by screws or small bolts.

What do you think bro, diba posible yung idea ?? 😉

Or you can attach a solid flat piece of wood by screwing it onto the stainless plate( tray )to secure the wood and then attach naman your fabricated stand/holder by screwing it sa center of the wood, by doing so your stand/holder will never get affected by the ground clamp because of the wood attachment, it will serve as your insulation when placed on top of the welding table, diba ??

Yes bro ... that's a possible option for magnet source. I note that the Miller Holder has a very very strong magnet with a 3.5" diameter.

Re: DIY 3 in 1 Stinger & Torch Holder/Stand

IMHO, A bevel joint joint must have been taken into consideration to avoid convexity, thus preventing to apply inner weld. For that matter it will look more slick than massive looking for just simple fun[COLOR="Navy"]ction as mig gun holder.

I can't seem to understand what you mean here bro kabasor but really trying to decipher your statement, Maybe you were pointing out the welds I made on the clamp fabrication, I hope I'm right coz that is the only image where several corner joints were done.

Well the corner joints of the three plates I welded, I applied the V-Groove Corner beveling on the two joints though the MS plates were not that thick, I just made sure there will be complete fusion of metals on each corner joints, plus maybe you were right regarding the weld pass I made inside the clamp but I deemed it necessary for me so to make sure the inside corner joints are well supported, hehehehe " feeling sigurista lang ako ", reason is that every time I tighten the bolt to lock the clamp, the lower plate would move a little bit outwards. :p

And for the looks, I'm not too concern of that, I'm more concern of its build and sturdiness since the holder might be carrying two torches at a time when the time comes that I get serious probably working on a large metal project or sculpture. 😉

-----------------------------------------------

Maybe the convexity you were referring is the one on the vertical plate, well it occurred when I welded the connecting horizontal tubing/pipe, maybe to much heat was applied but it was considered as a very minimal defect as far as I am concerned. Well this is only a prototype of a holder and maybe if I have used a much thicker plate/metal, everything could have been just fine.

Re: DIY 3 in 1 Stinger & Torch Holder/Stand

Here are some images of the insulated holder clamp :

Rubber padding of 1/2" thick has been glued on to the underside of the top plate, then also on the welded flat washer at the tip end of the locking bolt.

This is how the clamp will appear when fixed on the welding table, no contact of metal to metal even though the welding table is attached to the ground clamp.

Most probably Bro Kabasor is talking about this ... for a while there I thought it was the Mig Gun Rest ... but I saw no corner joints.

Re: DIY 3 in 1 Stinger & Torch Holder/Stand

Well bro JayL, I guess you are right, he must be referring to that image, well that was a good observation on his part and it is well taken and accepted. Since this is only a prototype, changes can be made, improvements can be applied, to be able to come up with shall we say very acceptable if not so perfect metal project like this one.

Re: DIY 3 in 1 Stinger & Torch Holder/Stand

In passing it is my idea that corner welds should ideally be the same thickness as the metals welded. I think I read this somewhere but am not sure where. Please correct if I'm wrong.

Bro JayL,

Actually you are not wrong, it is really a must in applying weld to corner joints to be able to attain proper welds and metal fusion. 😉

Re: DIY 3 in 1 Stinger & Torch Holder/Stand

LOL ... post mo nga yata nakita ko bro .... probably in one of your tips. Looks like welding rod sizing will play a role here. When welding thinner metals less deposits is desired. That is if there will be no grinding.

Re: DIY 3 in 1 Stinger & Torch Holder/Stand

I don't think so bro JayL, it may look so similar but have not yet reached the topic of applying welds on Tee-Joints. Possibly you got the information from your readings on Stick welding or Mig welding provided by Miller Welding. I get my readings, information too from Miller aside from the booklet given to me by a friend welder.

Now what ever I practice and learn from these information, I share it with our friends here sa PHM, as simple as that, hehehehe.

Re: DIY 3 in 1 Stinger & Torch Holder/Stand

OK, I'm done with the base holder that will have to be clamped on the welding table, then some parts of the main body of the torch holder and the Mig holder too has been shown. Now pics of the other parts like the one for the stick rod holder and the TIG Torch holder up to the finished and completed project.

First set of pics to be posted is the main reason for this metal project:

Again, I cut a piece of 1 1/2" SS pipe then severe it twice in the middle length wise so that I can fit in the cable and insert / rest the electrode inside. Again welded some sort of edgings on the edges of the SS pipe using 1/8" SS rods.

Re: DIY 3 in 1 Stinger & Torch Holder/Stand

A piece of small SS pipe and a piece of 1/2" solid SS rod are welded together at the back of the 1 1/2" SS pipe. This solid SS rod will be inserted inside one of the tubing, a bit larger in diameter at the main body/frame of the torch holder.
