I starter the exercise by cutting two pieces of 4" X 6" X 1/8" thick flat bar, correction, its 1/8" not 3/16" thick as stated above. De rusted both using a flap sanding disc.

Used an angle grinder with a flap disc sander for faster de rusting before weld applications.

For each plate, I'll be using different kinds of welding electrodes, one is E6013 and another is the E7024, also known as a "drag rod".

FOR THE FIRST PLATE, ITS GOING TO BE THE
E6013 WELDING ELECTRODE :


Made some grid on the metal surface as guide.

This is the first half weld application using a 120AMP setting.

On this succeeding weld application I reset the amperage to 130AMPs


Here's the result of the weld applications after chipping off and wire brushing the metal surface.


A bonus here at the back side of the plate, I just continuously applied welds freehand to exercise hand/wrist control, applying short strokes and longer strokes. Still with the same ampere setting of 130AMPs using the YAMATO DC Inverter weld machine.

But before I went ahead with the exercise, I tried it on some scrap metals using different ampere settings and this is what I found out :

I started with.....
100AMPs --------- not enough heat, it was too cold to be able to deposit a decent bead.

120AMPs -------- It was still cold, still not enough heat.

140AMPs -------- It started out giving/depositing good decent weld beads.

160AMPs + -------- Now this setting gave a sweeter weld bead application, faster and easier, tip of the welding rod would immediately fire up upon contact with the metal surface, I like this setting better.


Just went ahead with the weld application setting my amperage to 160AMPs and from the looks of it getting the correct ampere setting, slags would easily be chipped of from the weld puddles.


And here is the result of the weld application exercises after clean ups. No weld weaving was done here, just dragging the rod with short strokes and some with longer strokes.

And then another bonus here at the back of the flat plate, made some freehand weld bead applications. Adjusted my ampere setting to 170AMPs.


Here I did several combinations of weld applications but at the end of the plate toyed with one straight weld application using some weld weaving strokes.

Well using this "drag rod" for the first time is quite something new, I guess it will need more practice for me to be able to produce a straighter weld puddles, but I do like this welding electrode, it has more tensile strength and can be used also for different weld positions like flat and horizontal applications.

YES bro JayL, THANKS, but still not fully satisfied with the outcome, looking at these beads would sometimes give me goosebumps, they look like wiggling worms. I'll post another set of beads soon using the same E7024 rods and will try to apply these beads with more control and uniformity.

I think this could be a nice substitute for the E6013, since I just found out that the problem with the 6013s is that usually it gets some defects in the process of weld application, 🙁 the defect I am talking about are the sort of worm holes or craters that can sometimes be found after the weld application, after chipping off the slags and exposing the weld puddles. :whipass:

Well my first reaction to this kind of welding rod when I first got hold of it was " ang taba pala ng rod na ito " , hehehehe 😀

Sige hanap ka ng smaller 7024. I've been to Toolec yesterday. Walang smaller version ang 7024. Also, they are just depleting remaining cigweld electrodes. Wala pa silang sinabing brand that they will carry. Wala ring na 6010 that I intend to use on my practice lessons from Lincoln. Gloves lang nabili ko at 220 Php.

I checked website of Nihonweld which shows a wider range of rods. Limited nga lang din availability here at Dasma. Limited also on stores I visited there at Marikina. Hanap mode uli...

I've been there this noontime. Only 6011 - 1/8 and above, 6013 - 3/32 and above and 7018 1/8.

Mga brad if you will be buying E7018 welding electrodes, be specific and get the DC rods since ang mga weld machines ninyo ay Yamato DC Inverter, kung baga akma silang dalawa.

As promised, I'm doing again some weld exercises on two 3/16" flat plates using only these two different types of welding electrodes. Hope you viewers can pick up something useful for your own weld applications as I did while doing these different weld applications.

I know doing weld exercises are not that colorful and possibly not eye catching but that's how it is, one has to just practice a lot of welding applications on some scrap metals or plates to find out different characteristics of each welding electrodes and to sharpen ones skill , hoping too that you have all the patience and time viewing this thread.


I was able to schedule the whole day yesterday preparing for this exercises. Did some metal cuttings from my scrap stocks, cleaned it up, de rusted both sides of the plates and planned for the weld applications. ALSO took pictures of the procedures and listed down on a piece of paper every results or information needed so I may not forget these detailed results.
And this is my set up before the actual weld exercises,


One plate for each type of welding electrode, maybe when I'm done with this, I'll cut another set of plates for more welding exercises.

I guess by the exercises I will be posting, you can already follow how to do it on your own. 😉

I'll start with the E7018 DC welding electrode and using the YAMATO 200amp DC weld machine.
E 7018 DC


Size of metal plate is 3/16" X 4" X 8" and securely clamped on my portable welding positioner to avoid metal warping.


On these two images above,I set my amperage to 100amp for the first line of weld application, I guess it was not hot enough that I was having some difficulty firing up the tip of the welding rod and I cannot make a continues weld puddle.

So I stopped and adjusted the setting to 120amp and applied the second line of weld puddles. Well its kinda sort of successful but the slags when chipped off was not I was expecting yet, some were still sticking and you will have to apply more pressure in removing them slags.


Now before applying the next line of weld, I adjusted again the ampere setting to 130amp and really was very optimistic of the outcome. Though made a little mistake during weld application since I was not able to control and maintain the correct travel distance after almost 2 inches of weld application so it stopped and when the tip stops firing up its kinda hard to re start again because of the thick flux surrounding the metal rod would be covering the tip or will be left un burned and the metal rod will be way far inside, so I still have to scratch the tip so hard or get a long nose pliers to nip off the tip of the welding rod to expose again the metal tip to be able to re start the welding process.
