While almost halfway through welding the GI pipe step ladder project, I decided to fabricate some new saw horses but instead of using lumber/wood, it will be made of steel, these are materials that I have as left overs from previous projects long time ago during house constructions. I will be making four( 4 ) of these to support the 20 feet GI pipe step ladder I am working on since my other saw horses are being used. So this project can be considered as a metal project within an on going metal project, or doing two projects at a time.

My materials are :
1. T-Bars cut already to length
2. Old rusted 2" GI pipes already cut to length
3. 1/2" and 1" GI pipes
4. 16mm corrugated steel bars
5. Perhaps a scissor jack or a 2 ton hydraulic jack

Its gonna be a multi purpose steel saw horse where the top can be adjusted at a desired height from 30" up to 46", the flat top can receive several attachments like a steel roller, a welding arm and a top extender to accommodate a full size 4' x 8' board, this can also be used to support a smaller table top for welding use. I have been working on the project for a week or so, project is slow since I would go shuffle from one project to the other.

Anyway, posted are the plan or sketchup images in general for better understanding/visualization, additional details or any changes will be done during the process of fabrication.

Re: Multi-Purpose Steel Saw Horse

Nice project rosy simple but looks very sturdy when it is actually built na. The adjustable height feature is also very nice. i'll probably build a similar one in wood version.

Congrats na-discover mo na rin gumamit ng Sketchup.

Ang galing. Naka sketch up na ang mama.

Sana more of us may use or discover sketch up. Malaking tulong lalong lalo na sa fit checks. IMO, good for those who wanted to draw or make design w/o the need of complex ACAD.

Re: Multi-Purpose Steel Saw Horse

Yes av973, it would really be a great help for anybody to learn this program, it is very useful indeed but will take lots of patience again for practice plus the images that will have to be projected still need to be done first on paper so one will have an easy visualization of the projects together with all the necessary dimensions/measurements there in.

Well its a sort of time consuming program and have to learn most of the tools and commands you want done. I would sometimes or from time to time ask my son for some assistance on what tool to use. :p 😉 :lalala:

@ bugel,

Those two rectangular holes are for slots to be inserted/fitted attached to a long 3 X 4 lumber or a long tubular and locked from under if I want to extend the length of the top lets say up to 48", 60" or more. These holes will also be utilized in case I needed an extra cutting or welding table of 24" X 36" or so in size. Several attachments will also be fabricated after I finish two of this steel saw horse.

Actually these rectangular holes were just accidental in nature, I was just attaching another piece of 4" to widen the top to 5", then saw the possibilities that can be had with the use of these holes, so it ended up as a multi-purpose saw horse.

Re: Multi-Purpose Steel Saw Horse

OK, here are my WIPs for this project, materials used are what I have in the garage, making use of what is on hand like excess T-Bars and GI pipes and whatever I can use. :attack:

These are the T-Bars cut to specified sizes with an angle grinder fitted with a very thin cutting disc to reduce metal wastage.

Re: Multi-Purpose Steel Saw Horse

The top of the T-Bars is really not that thick, its only 2 mm and will have to watchout on the right welding electrode to use and the right amperage to set.

And the width of the top measures only 1.75" or 1 3/4" inches.

So if I combine them all together I will get a measurement of almost 5" inches wide top surface !

Re: Multi-Purpose Steel Saw Horse

And so this is how the smaller pieces of T-Bars will be positioned.

Then I'll be using only a flap disc attached to an angle grinder to clean of the rusts on the metal where I will be doing the tack welds. 😉

Tack welding time of the underside !!! :attack:

OK, tacked welded the T-Bars underside using 6013 3/32" rods at 90 ampere setting.

Re: Multi-Purpose Steel Saw Horse

And tacked as well the top side of the T-Bar.

Tacked welded both ends and middle.

Overall view of the first part of the project. Have to fasten them with pieces of flat bars to make the surface completely flat and to prevent warping.

Re: Multi-Purpose Steel Saw Horse

But before applying welds on the top side, I decided to add another set of tack welds on the underside, in the middle portion to strengthen the hold of the joints.

Re: Multi-Purpose Steel Saw Horse

Then started applying welds on the top surface using E6013 3/32" rods at 75 to 80 ampere setting, I have to increase a bit my speed travel to prevent burn throughs. Its very evident after chipping off the slags. ANYWAY, I will just grind them all to achieve an even flat surface. :attack:
