Hi guys,

What's the recommended filter shade number are you using? (for those not using ADH). The default shade on my helmet is #11. But I'm really having trouble seeing what I'm trying to weld with it. It's just too dark. It's only the puddle that's visible when an arc has started. But starting an arc - have to peek first. And sometimes too late in bringing the helmet down that a spark has already begun-not good for our eyes. I've search online. Have different ideas. Gets confusing who's right. Was wondering maybe if #10 or #9 shade is appropriate. That I can see at least what I'm trying to weld and not to peek anymore.

Re: Recommended Filter Lense Shade Number

Hey NTD,

You are on the right track with following that "Lens Shade Selector Guide", I suppose you are using the ordinary flip up window pipe liner welding mask. Are you sure its shade 11 coz usually its the shade 10 that is attached to the welding mask if purchase from local hardware or mall hardware stores.

Others prefer the shade 11 and they are used to that, it protects their eyes completely during actual welding sessions specially if they are using an ADH helmets. The shade # 10 is the normal one for the old school helmets but see if you can get a shade # 9, I suppose you will see the puddles clearly but watch out for you might get some eye strain and a headaches, of course medyo lighter and shade nyan. 😮

Bro for a beginner, it would be easier if you can get an ADH, not necessarily the expensive type, it will help you a lot during starting an arc and continuous practice welding. That is what other members have experienced and attested.

Re: Recommended Filter Lense Shade Number

Hi Rosy,

Thanks. Be safe than sorry. hehe. Yes,it's just the ordinary flip up type. I stand corrected, your right. I just glance at it now and it says Aulektro 10 FW DIN Made in Germany. - creston helmet in Ace Hardware.

Hmmm.. that's the advantage of ADH, can be set to the desired shade. I have difficulty searching on hardware stores that #9 or #8 (just want to see the difference). Mostly are all #10 up.

Yeah, another future project-ADH.. on my wishlist. lolz! Im a bit weary about those cheap ADH - china made. Maybe they don't respond "technically" as specified - mga substandard quality and response time. Which could even hurt you on the long run. Expecting you get protection, but your not pala.

Re: Recommended Filter Lense Shade Number

After much thought, what the heck. Hehehe..Better be safe than sorry. I bought one last friday. Canvassed every hardware store I can pass by in down town cebu. Geez, most are selling those generic type - unbranded. With very low specs 1/1000s response time and yet very expensive at 4K+.And some don't have any. Don't even know what it is. lolz! Luckily I've contacted ahead a shop that gave me a discount price. It was a great buy compared to those generic ones. It's always raining here. No time to test it. Maybe by monday. =) - test it with my LED monitor and it works well. lolz!

Re: Recommended Filter Lense Shade Number

Yeah, thanks! Was just aiming for the plain black as it's 500php cheaper than those with designs/colors. But that was not available. So just got what was available for retail.

Hope it will. Baka ma addict kakawelding na..ahhaha! Have so many projects in mind to build. Marami gawan ng gates dito for security purposes. Pero have to wait if I have extra funds for the tubings etc. Those are not cheap as I inquired. Lols!

TV remote or such can also be used to test auto darkening helmets. Just point the infra red to the the lens.

Re: Recommended Filter Lense Shade Number

@larry Yes, I did that. That was the first thing I did when I arrived home. hehe

@JayL Ah ok, thanks sa tip. I don't have tv here. hehe.

Computer monitor/LED is the best. Same as testing your shades if its polarized or not. 🙂

Re: Recommended Filter Lense Shade Number

pati na rin ang isang magandang klaseng respirator...nakalanghap pa rin ako ng welding fumes kahapon gamit ko eh yung regular at simpleng 3M respirator lang na which was the only one available at hand. ngayon parang masakit ang ulo ko na sisipunin ba at parang ttrangkasuhin. gonna get a better one sa susunod.

Re: Recommended Filter Lense Shade Number

Get an electric fan Mike. Point it so it will blow away the welding fumes from you. The is one of the advantages of stick welding. No gas shielding to disrupt when using a blower or fan.

Re: Recommended Filter Lense Shade Number

thanks for the comments sir jay and sir rosy....will buy an exhaust fan next time. macontact na rin sir joey. tutal sa kanya rin ako nakabili ng chipping hammers.

yung hanson pala sir jay nabinyagan ko agad. nasugatan agad ng welding. accidental contact. one of the disadvantages ng walang ADH. hehe ayoko muna magpakulam sa ADH. Chopsaw muna.

sorry TS. mejo na-OT tayo.

Re: Recommended Filter Lense Shade Number

@miked Yeah. A big must talaga may respirator. But using ADH, you can't use any respirator. You need to modify it with a flexible hose or something. So the cartridge is behind your back. I saw someone in youtube made something like that for his ADH.

Hehehe. May adverse effect talaga ang mga fumes. Tindi ng effect especially makalanghap ka. Nagiging irritable throat ko that night after. Wala naman me tonsil. That's why I don't regularly do welding. Maybe after a couple of days. Tsaka balik practice. 🙂
