Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

And here is the reverse side of the flat bar. Hvae to maximize its use and applied anothe set of welds on the metal joints.

There is my first weld application and was able to immediately take a pic while the slag was dislodging itself , then stepped back again so not to be hit by flying slag.

And the second application of weld , took a pic right after applying the weld and again before the slag starts to pop out.

There it is the slag , has totally dislodged itself from the weld. These chips of slag are still very hot and it can still burn your skin if you are not careful.

Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

Here are pics of that side, cleaned and wire brushed again :

On this side of the flat bar I applied a different technique, the push and pull way of applying the weld puddle, this technique can be applied only on thicker metals because the movement stays only on one direction, no weaving from left to right but only pushing the weld beads then retracting a few centimeters then pushing again forward and then retracting again, doing this procedure until I have finished applying the welds. 😉 Oh if you will notice on the last image, I made a little mistake in applying the weld, while starting to apply the push and pull, the welding rod stuck to the weld puddle so I have to re start anew my weld applications.

Next will be the mini WIP !!!!!!

TO BE CONTINUED and thanks for viewing .

Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

Pardon for these pics for I have stated in the last posting as the mini WIP will be next but just can't help but to try again applying a few more welds on the flat bar to maximize its use.

I applied some more welds on the sides near the edges and in the middle, and have included the slags that have dislodge by themselves.

Two images showing the cleaned weld application plus one closer view of the flat bar showing some decent stainless welds.

Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

Its been quite a while since I practiced welding on stainless steel flat bars and others, well since I got my new 200amp DC Inverter arc weld machine, I thought I'd try it on stainless steel.
So for the past few days I have been practicing with this DC Inverter and discovered something interesting that I thought worth sharing with you guys.

OK, for those guys getting the YAMATO 200 amp dc Inverter arc welder, please don't think there is something wrong with it if ever you try using a stainless welding electrode, nothing is wrong with the welder, I found out its the welding electrode.

Now let me share this useful tip when welding stainless steel and of course using a stainless welding electrode.

As I was practicing stick welding on stainless flat bars, I was able to gather some spent welding rods ends about 4" to 6" in length but noticed its tips, very similar to a 7018 ordinary welding rod when used, the metal inside that melts while welding have somewhat stopped inside leaving the flux shielding it still intack around the tip about 1/16 of an inch from the metal tip.

And so this is what's giving me a hard time starting again to apply weld on the metal surface. As you stick the tip on the metal surface, the tip of the welding electrode won't start to fire up or burn immediately and so there was a need to remove the flux left around the tip of the rod so that the metal inside would be exposed again and here is what I did.

Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

And this is what I did, got my scratch plate , placed it nearby so that every time I re start applying welds again, I would scratch the electrode hard to remove some flux to expose the metal inside.

Don't ever think guys that it is the DC weld machine that is defective and could not burn the tip of the welding electrode, it is the flux covering that is blocking the metal tip. 😮

Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

OH by the way this stainless steel welding electrode is similar to this 7018 rods that also leaves some flux outside surrounding the metal tip and preventing immediate re starting when applying welds.

******* So the simple tip here is when re starting to weld strike hard the welding electrode, hard on to a metal surface or scratch it hard to a scratch plate to expose the metal tip and continue applying welds easily. 😀

Hope this helps, thanks for viewing !!!!! :thanks:

Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

As I have mentioned, I wanted to try the DC Inverter weld machine on stainless steel so I prepared my materials and measured its thickness just for the sake of recording the metal and possibly know up to what thickness this metal can take without warping when welded.

Measured this SS flat bar with a digital callipher and it indicates 2.5mm thickness.

And measured too a piece of SS 1 x 1 angle bar and it indicates a much thicker metal, 3.5mm thickness. Then held them together to see its difference in thickness.

Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

Sliced a piece lengthwise and for the base crosswise, then bended the former piece to form a sort of letter v, set it on the base plate so I can practice a 2G or 2F weld position.

For the angle bar, cut up a piece in the middle and then put them together to form a small square tubing.

Put the angle bars together and weld the edges to form a small SS square tubing.

Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

AND TO PROCEED WITH THIS INITIAL EXERCISE for the angle bars :

Positioned the two angle bars together and started applying tack welds on each sides ends.

Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

And as well as the other side of the angle bar and its joints.

After applying welds, waited for it to cool down and let the slags dislodge itself from the weld. Then wire brushed the surface to remove other minute slags still sticking on the metal.

And the results of the welds, I may leave it that way or grind the welds applied to see the effect of the now small tubular. Welds were not yet so perfect that I was still trying out different ampere settings for each weld applied.

Re: STICK WELDING on STAINLESS STEEL sheets, plates and more.

AND TO CONTINUE THIS ANGLE BAR TUBING, there are two choices you can do or perhaps select what is best for your application.

For some, they just leave the welds evidently showing with little grinding here and there or for some people, they prefer it clean and grinded/polished.
