It's been quite a while now since I last welded on some thin sheet metals and I think its a few years back when I added an extension roofing on our new dirty kitchen using some angular steel, rectangular tubings and C purlins.

This thread will not be a WIP project thread but instead be more on practice welding using SMAW on thin sheet metals. Just felt that it will be good to share this to the PHM community and to those who will be or might be interested in Stick Welding.

This thread is dedicated to the future welding newbies in the community.

I'll make it clear first that I am not a certified or a liscensed welder nor claims to be a guru here in welding, I learned how to weld metals by simply watching and observing other professional welders that I have hired in the past and by this developed great interest in the tool and its process.

I am first an artist and this is my career and profession and by learning how to weld and being able to weld metal is just another additional skill for me and the welding machine, an additional tool for me too to pursue other means of art expression particularly some metal sculptures in the future or maybe metal furnitures with wood combined or artistic metal garden fixture, etc etc etc.

Why do I practice welding when I know already how to weld metal, well its very similar to art, one has to continue practicing ones drawings of any object that we see like for example the human anatomy, to be able to draw or paint the human figure correctly an artist has to practice always with his drawings of various parts of the body, its muscle formation, the skeletal and bone structures etc etc. So that is what I am doing now, practicing para makuha ko uli ang tamang pulso sa pag weld ng thin sheet metals. So I hope you guys will have the patience in viewing the pics that I will be posting and I'm pretty sure this will be beneficial to the newbies. Ok here goes the first practice:

Gathered some scrap thin sheet metals, C purlins and a number of fruit juice tin cans, I'll be doing my practice welding on these materials and we will see how it will come out.

Here I sprayed the metal strips with two different colors to easily identify which is thinner or thicker than the two sets of strips of metal.

In this pic, I am now showing first the thickness of the C purlins

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

A continuation of the practice welding:

These metal strips were painted yellow for easy identification specially its thickness.

These metal strips are painted red and are more thicker than the first pic.

This is the brand of welding rods that I will be using and note the encircled imprints.

Here I have set my amperage to the lowest. Note also the encircled portion.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

whoaa!! nice thread sir Rosy.

i once tried welding c purlins, here:

http://www.pinoyhandyman.com/showthread.php?t=1333&page=2

only by using DC welder, i havent tried that to my AC welder since i know bubutasin nya lang yung 1.1mm c purlins hehe

the dc welder settings using DCEP, E6013 2.5mm rod.

let us see more from your AC welder...

miss you all guys.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

Thank you JayL and ossie for the encougement and I hope this thread will be worth watching, there will be ugly weld beads here I am sure and possibly holes on the thin sheet metal during practice but I will no yield to that, I will continue practicing and posting until I get the proper and right bead weld. :p

Kelangan bumalik ang magandang pulso sa pag weldl ng mga linzo.

Anyway before I started this thread I did practice first on other scrap thin sheets and the results were so bad, I cannot produce a good bead weld. I started with the 120 amp then 100, 90, 80, amps, all made holes as soon as I stick the welding rod to the metal but when I adjusted it to 70 amps, I started making beads already but still producing holes from time to time so I adjusted it ones more to 60 amperes and let us see how the beads will look. 😉

Thanks again mga brother. :thanks:

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

Bro,

We really need to see the worst and badest mistakes, results and beads as much as possible . It is what will make us viewers learn more.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

Continuation of the practice welding:

Ok I started working on the metal metal strips painted yellow ( ala color coding, he he he ) with thickness of 0.98mm thickness, set it up and ready for welding by just tacking. Before I started tacking the sheet metal strip I tried it first on another scrap metal and also tried putting a stringer after tacking, well it did not come out quite very nice, the 3/32 welding rod made a sort of long hole, the metal sheet got melted upon just dragging the thin welding rod.

So I did not continue with the attempt and just did the tacking process on the prepared scrap metal sheet.

And this is the result of the tacking practice, still made a hole in the center. Well the beads were kinda acceptable for now.

A closer look on the metal strip and the bead welds. HHHMMMMM, passing kaya ito ?

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

Continuation again of the practice welding:

Not satisfied with the result of the first try, I made another set of the thin sheet strips for a second try and find out if beads will improve.

Here's the second attempt on the metal strips and I think I see some improvements. Still needs more practice.

A closer look on the second set of metal strips, what do you think guys, is it improving ?
Yeyks more burnt holes beside the bead welds. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

To be continued again, thanks.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

Yes jon thanks, I'm glad it will be beneficial to you since you are having interest in the machine and the welding process. I will try my best to show or deliver the neccessary ways in this welding practices in a very simple but effective means so that it can easily be understood.

I started with this practice project because I know welding on thin sheet metal is kinda tricky and most often frustrating, really if you don't know how to weld this metal, you will just be punching holes on the material.

THANKS again jon for your support and hope that this thread will really be of great help to you and to other members who might be interested too in welding.

CHEERS.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

this is the setting we used for 1mm c-purlins after experimentation
we used 3/32" 6013 rods set at 50~60 amps (not sure abt the accuracy of digital readout panel)

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

If only I have a portable ac/dc welder with a lower amperage, lets say lowest is 35 or 40 amps, maybe this will be good for 1mm thin sheet metals or c purlins, BUT !!!!!!!! with a big but, of course using a MIG or a TIG, the problem of burnt hole sa thin sheet metal will not be a subject to talk about, but since this thread is about using a stick welder so that is what I am trying to perfect here and in time I know it can be done, just need to continue practicing and find the right technique.

Napansin ko nga sa pic ng post mo, minimum setting ng Arc welding m/c is 60A. Sa portable arc welding machine min setting is 30A. Good for thin sheet metal and thin wall tube welding.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

Yes Bro that is the lowest setting for my Yamato AC welder, I guess I'll try using my other welder, a locally made 200 amps AC welder, I can put the setting probably to low or spot setting only and find out again if I will be successful in doing spot or stich welding on thin sheet metal.

Thanks for your inputs on the matter.
