Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

I was not able to do my practice welding yesterday 'coz I had to fix one of my Ryobi line trimmers, the trigger cable attached to the carburator has gotten loose and the starter pull cord was having some problems too already.

I'll continue my welding practice/exercises today and continue taking notes and documenting the results of the PIPs and will post them later.

THANKS.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

Bro in case you grind the welds here can you please show the after grinding pictures. tks

@ JayL,

Bro here's the pic of the grinded C-Purlins as you have requested. Actually I added another piece of C-Purlins for additional practice or exercise. The grinded C-Purlins looked as though it was never cut.

This is the previous pic.

This is the grinded C-Purlin with another piece welded and grinded too. The C-Purlins look as though it was not cut nor welded.

This is the side of it for easy reference of the previous post though this one I added another C-Purlins.

I'll be posting more of my current welding exercises/practice later in the day.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

Bro Rosy,

Thanks for the pics. Looking good the way I see it. Weld strength is sometimes more important than looks but seems like you have both now after the grinding.

Kindly show the reverse side also when you get chance. It will be good for us to see how the penetration went on the other side of the plate.

Cheers

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

JayL, I'm afraid I will not be able to show you that particular C-Purlins coz I used it again for more practice, e sya ay butas butas na with plenty other welding applications 😮 but IIRC I guess I have shown this particular C-Purlins, its underside showing the full penetration of the weld on the previous post on page 3 and I think its post no.30, the second pic. :p 🙂 :victory:

Sorry sorry kuya Jay, nasira ko na C-Purlins.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

To continue with my welding exercises or PIPs, here are some more pics again of some scrap thin sheet metal that I was able to source out from a junk shop near us. By the way its thickness is only 0.95mm, thinner than the C-Purlins. Also these were the metal strips that I was working on on the previous post #36, showing me practicing in the garage.

Cut some strips of this thin metal then numbered them for easy identicication with a stone chalk.

Well I did some more practice on this thin sheet metal by starting again with tacking beads on metal strips #1 and #2 then continued on #2 and#3 then #3 and #4, trying my best to apply a very satisfactory weld bead one at a time and also avoiding punching a hole or two but in some instances really cannot avoid punching some holes on the sheet metal.

Here is a more closer view of the bead applications. On this strips of sheet metal welded together, I have encircled the kind of tacks or weld beads that I would like to maintain or attain on the whole process but sometimes hand pulse application would change, kailangan talaga na magaan ang pulso ng kamay, para bang pinipitik lang ang pag aaply ng beads.

Also every time I apply the beads I would count 1 and 2 then 1 and 2 again on the next bead and so on and so forth to maintain an even application of the beads, kaya lang talagang manipis ang metal sheet but I guess with lots of patience and perseverance this can be attained.

On this last pic, the lower part of the strip 4,5 and 6, I tried lenghtening the size of the bead with one stroke but really the heat of the rod is burning the sheet metal. In some instances I would try to make my application a bit faster to avoid punching a hole , sometimes its ok and sometimes its becoming to be so frustrating.

Anyway I'll be cutting some more strips of sheet metal to continue practicing and hopefully learn a style or technique on how not to burn or punch a hole on the metal sheet.

Thanks for viewing again my PIPs and hope am not boring you. I'll be posting more later as soon as I have finished with this 0.95mm thick sheet metal.

:go::go: lang brad rosy...

walang boring sa ginagawa mo bro,
all are very informative,
kung malapit ka lang sa amin, pasyalan kita...
i'll be enjoying watching your stick welding practices...
very detailed bro, all are benifiting from your wips este pips...
now i know where to go, kung kelangan ko magpractice....:mop:

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

HEY jon,

THANKS a lot for your continued encouragement and support, comments like this keeps me going bro though I can simply do the practice welding without posting the PIPS but knowing you and your great interest in the process, yes I'll continue posting so that you will benefit and others too who might be interested " SA KAUNTI KONG KAALAMAN " and to this machine. :p

If only mag kapitbahay tayo or medyo malapit ka sa amin e I would love to do practice welding with you. Its great to practice weld with some one who really is interested in learning the machine and what it can do, plus we could learn a lot from each other pa in the process. You may not know it but with this exercises I'm doing, I too am learning a lot here personally. 😉

Jon, after this PIPs in thin sheet metal, I'll follow it up with another thread naman. I'll be using naman thicker metals and will tackle the correct amperage and some proper ways or techniques in using still a stick welder. HE HE HE HE its gonna be PIPs on thicker metals naman and I think the process will be much easier kasi hindi na makaka butas ng bakal. :yikes:

----------------------------------

Sana some day maturuan mo rin ako sa mga wood working techniques mo Bro. I need to learn a lot too in this WW process.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

Here's a continuation of my welding exercises or practice in progress. After doing the thin sheet, I decided to continue practicing with the C-Purlins so that there is some sort of variety in the presentation of this exercises and also to continue what I have shown in the previous post regarding working on a C-Purlins. By the way again the thickness of this C-Purlins is 0.98mm.

Now to continue with the exercise I did yesterday, Sunday, here are the pics that we can study and probably learn something.

Here I sliced up again three small pieces of C-Purlins to be welded.

Then started bead or tack welding the sides closely

Then also the top too and it seems my bead welds are improving a lot if you will look closely on the pics.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

After the initial bead weld applications, I continued applying bead welds again now in between the two initial bead welds, as if connecting all the bead welds to close the gap between the C-Purlins.

And this side too

And the main top side too, you can see now almost all the gaps are becoming already closed and welded up now.

My main intention in these exercises was not to show a good looking image of the welds but mainly to connect or attached these C-Purlins without punching a hole on the metal. 😀

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

After the completion of bead weld applications, I started to do some metal grinding to find out if them C-Purlins were properly welded or metal fusion has been completed, here are the pics.

I started grinding the sides and seems ok

And the top side too plus a closer look of the top side. HHmmmmmm seems quite successful in joining this thin sheet C-Purlins. Though a hole between #1 and #2 C-Purlins is evident but I find it negligible and can be corrected on other welding exercises.

The exercises done in the previous post specially the multiple tacking bead welds have made surprisingly some very fruitful progress. OK then 'till my next post of PIPs and maybe I'll switch again to thin sheet panels and do some more bead welding practices.

THANKS again for viewing this PIPs.

Re: STICK WELDING on thin sheet metal

Yes timbs, before when I do welding e I don't use my glasses, I don't know why lately I would need it to see sharply. Maybe age is really catching up on me though I'm used to working and doing my paintings close to the canvas.

Well someday you'll have time to do some welding when the need arises, I just hope you are also somewhat benefitting from my PIPs.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe always when welding.
