Re: Yamato DC 200A Inveter Welder in Action

Hi Guys,

I would like to share this article I read about Stick Welding

What type of portable stick welder works best for all-around use?

A portable welder with an AC/DC output, whether its an electric arc machine or a gas engine drive...

Bear in mind the duty cycles, which means the number of minutes out of a 10-minute cycle a welder can operate.

For example, a machine that creates a 200 amp DC output at 20 percent duty cycle. It can weld continuously at 200 amps for two minutes...

And then must cool for eight minutes to prevent overheating.

Duty cycle and amperage are in general, relative to the work load.

Operating at 90 amps, with a 100 percent duty cycle, means you can weld without stopping.

In my experience DC welding offers advantages over AC for most Stick applications, including:

Easier starts

Fewer arc outages and sticking

Less spatter and much better looking welds

Easier vertical up and overhead welding

Easier to learn with and a smoother arc...

DC reverse polarity (electrode positive) provides about 10 percent more penetration at a given amperage than AC...

On the other hand DC straight polarity (electrode negative) welds thinner metals better.

However AC output does have its advantages too.

Like if you need to weld farm equipment or material that's become magnetized from friction...

For example; when hay, feed or water constantly rub against a steel part.

A DC output won't work because of "arc blow," where the magnetic field blows the molten filler metal out of the weld puddle.

The advantage of AC, because an AC output alternates between polarities, it enables you to weld magnetized parts.

The type of surface being welded can also affect weld characteritics including strength of welded parts and finish...

Should you remove rust or oil before welding?

Stick welding because of its very nature is more forgiving on unclean surfaces...

TIP: It never hurts to clean parts with a wire brush or grind off excess rust.

Sometimes...even great welding skills cannot overcome poor surface preparation, as it can lead to cracking, lack of fusion and slag inclusions.

In general...if you get into the habit, prepare well and have average welding ability, you can make just about any job seem quicker and easier.

And if you select the right type of rod, half the work is already done.

For general purpose welding work on steel, a common electrode used include 6010, 6011, 6013, 7018 and 7024, each of which has specific properties.

6010 electrodes penetrate deeply...

While 6013 electrodes penetrate less.

For much better bead appearance and work on higher strength steels (for a hitch), use a 7018 rod.

For better penetration on thick material, grind the joint to a 30 degree bevel (leave a nickel-width land on the bottom of the groove) and make multiple passes.

Alternatively, make the first pass with a 6010 rod, then make a "cap" with a 7018.

The 7024 rod is perhaps the easiest to use. Also known as a "drag rod," this electrode's thick flux automatically maintains the correct arc length...

Which allows you more control over draging rod directly along the work piece.

What determines how big of machine do you need?

Usually and this depends on the specific requirement, a good rule of thumb is to go for a range from 225 to 300 amp...most modern machine can handle almost anything you'll encounter...

Most Stick welding procedures require 200 amps or less.

To weld material thicker than 3/8 inch., simply make multiple passes - this is what professionals do, even when welding on 1 inch structural steel...

Hope this Helps 🙂

I have no experience in welding, but reading this thread about Yamato DC 200A Inverter Welder makes me want to get one :2thumbsup:

Re: Yamato DC 200A Inveter Welder in Action

sa wakas....

[IMG][/IMG]
Makita grinder 9553B, Yamato DC welder at 3ft Irwin tape measure.
di na muna ako bumili ng ADH, electrode holder at additional calbe. lean and utilitarian startup muna ako for the meantime.

Re: Yamato DC 200A Inveter Welder in Action

sir bugel, as per your experience limited to what sizes kaya ng bakal?

Re: Yamato DC 200A Inveter Welder in Action

I try it in 3/4 square tube and it doesn't finish the job..sad to say very limited lang
Talaga ang mapuputol mo sa angle grinder attachment na yan..i have that before
And end up at sulit hehehe..

Ipon ka pambili ng chop saw, look for another brand like bosch or dewalt..mine is
Maktec medyo cheapy lang sya just like makita rin, i compare it to makita it is the
Same body structures the difference are color, name and price..anyway makita
Rin naman ang maker ng maktec.

Buti ka nga lapit ka lang sa bilihan ng tools..dito sa province limited ang choices
Para ka pang hinoholdap sa presyo..:gun:

Re: Yamato DC 200A Inveter Welder in Action

@ idv14,

Thanks for this lengthy reminder about Stick welding, this initial information will be perfect for welding noobs, or first time user of this machine but aside from this read, newbies should provide some time to do more research and read more coz there are lots and lots more other information that will have to be understood and assimilated about the usage/application of this process in welding.

This welder seems to look cute and harmless because of its size but once used specially to those not familiar with stick welding might just be disappointed because they can't get to lay a decent weld bead or simply just can't join two metals together. Still PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING and PRACTICE are needed in learning the process of Stick welding.

Well bro we chose this brand of machine because the price is just fair for a DC welder, its a good entry level machine perfect for newbies starting out and trying how to weld and most of all, a very reliable after sales service coming from the seller's company. This machine doesn't differ with other new 200 amps DC welders out in the market now but of course we all know that this brand has been used in our country for a long long time now and has seems proven its worth and quality.

Now if you have no experience in welding and would like to lean the skill specially with stick welding, I believe this machine could be a good one to start with.

GOOD LUCK BRO !!! 😉 :bouncealt:

Re: Yamato DC 200A Inveter Welder in Action

HAHAHA, finally mapapainit narin Yamato mo, and after almost one year !!! tsk, tsk, nasayang kaibigan yuong 6 months warranty nya.

Yes for some square tubing of 1.5 mm thickness, if you will be using a 3/32" welding rod, set the amperage to 75 or 80 amps. But if you will use the standard 1/8" rods, set amperage to 90 or 100 amps.

Bro see if you can get some scrap or excess from your material and experiment or practice with it first and see what ampere setting/s will fit your requirement. Remember this tip, the thinner the material to be welded, the lower the ampere setting is required..... the thicker the material to be welded, higher ampere settings are needed to be able to have full metal fusion. 😉

tried tack welding scrap 1" square tubing. bakit kaya kumakapit yung electrode at wala naman nadedeposit na weld? tried raising the amp and lowering it same pa rin.

Re: Yamato DC 200A Inveter Welder in Action

Hello brad crazyboi_6,

Ahhh, what type or shall I say size of welding rod are you using, is it the standard 1/8" or the 3/32" thin rods ? For the standard 1/8" rod of E6013, simply maintain the ampere setting to 90 or 100 amps if your practice material is the 1.5 mm thick square tubing. Like wise with the 3/32" thin welding rods, you can set the amperage to 75, 80 or 90 amps.

Try to stick the end of the rod on the metal surface for a few seconds or do a scratch motion to make the rod produce an arc, similar to a match stick, then just drag it slowly towards the right if you are right handed, to produce a sort of straight weld beads. If the rod sticks to the metal surface, just do a left and right movement several times to un stick it and then start all over again.

Now if doing a sort of a tack weld or depositing a weld bead, stick your rod onto the metal and let it produce a molten puddle. To familiarize yourself how long it will take to produce a decent weld bead, try counting 1 to 6 or 8 seconds, then let go, chip off the slag and see how the weld bead would appear.
Do practice this often to familiarize yourself in depositing a weld bead, specially used for tacking two metals together.

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU BRO !!! 😉 🙂 😎

Hey bro miked, you finally got your YAMATO welder plus a grinder and a steel tape, well congrats bro. If you can't afford yet an ADH, bili ka na lang muna ng isang passive welding helmet with a flip window, mura lang sa mga mall hardwares of DIY shops, that will be enough to protect your eyes and face during practice session.

The angle grinder stand bro will be good only on small angle bars, flat bars or some solid round or square bars or perhaps small diameter pipes. It will not really be effective on some square tubings or large angle bars. So might as well use your angle grinder fitted properly with a cutting disc manually when cutting some square or rectangular tubing. Move the grinder towards you cutting the surface wall slowly on its sides.

yung grinder binili ko pala kay kimgold. yung yamato kay industrial 143.

Hey bro, were you given a discount on the newly purchased MAKITA ? Say some special discounts for being a PHM member.

THANKS BRO !!! 😉 :thanks:

salamat sa reply sir rosy....actually meron nako welding goggles na ginagamit ko last time sa class project. pero goggles lang sya as in mata lang ang protected. will try to work with what i have muna.

di pa ko nakakabisita sa mga junkshop. sabagay rainy tong weekend at wala akong dedicated workshop. under the tree or tarp yung "workshop" ko. hehe...tska tiga hatid ako ng food ni misis ngayong araw ng eleksyon.
