Hi Guys,

Ive been LOA from woodworking and the forum for awhile now. Baby and work taking most of my time 🙂 I still have my bro's 8 seater table on hold, might redo it since iam not happy with the current result.

While being away from woodworking I have been thinking lately of getting a second degree, B.S. Architecture.

was thinking before of doing industrial design, but i felt Architecture allowed for a more "limitless/no boundary" opportunity to create.

feedback from Architects here (i think there are a couple) would be appreciated

Cheers

Ben

Re: Architecture as a second degree?

if i have more time and money i will explore every possibilities.

i realized all these things only very lately when sickness hit me.

my mind was molded to become an MD but there is always this crazy thing for me to enter this artful course of architecture.

but i have to give up everything to realize that dream unless i can finish it bit by bit thru weekend classes..but weekend is the only time i get to "see" my woodworking tools...

i hope i can still play with my tools and create some useful stuff not for me but for people who i care about.

the question is...are you going to use it for gainful means or for self gratification?

Re: Architecture as a second degree?

Hi Ben,

Good to see you posting again..

I am guessing that if you do take Architecture, your not going to use it as your main source of income..and you would be studying this part time only..

Here's the skinny on Architecture, it takes 5 years to finish the course (i dont know if some of your old credits might remove some classes) 2 years OJT then Board exams..If you study this part time, i don't know how long it will take..

What most people don't realize is that Architecture is not all about art..we just don't draw and that's that..there Is a science/technical aspect to it. Architectural Science, Building Utilities, etc are all very technical subjects that you will have to go through. You will need to learn also the basics of civil engineering..

Also realize that the plates for the design classes are tough, i used to go 3 days with only 6 hrs sleep just to get to pass them (of course i was a bit of a crammer 😉 )..We had a slogan in college before that said Architecture is the college that never sleeps..so be prepared for that.

You mentioned also that you looked into Industrial Design.
My younger brother a Industrial Designer. From what i've observed from him, its is a very design oriented course. There is of course technical aspects to it as well, like studying materials, etc, but a lot more creation. He used to always build models of different kinds of things, have various concepts of everyday items. Your workshop would be of much help to you in this course. There were also times that he would not sleep as well, but not as bad as i had to do..

I am not trying to dissuade you from Architecture, but you do have to realize what your getting into. In my opinion, unless your goal is to get an Architect's license then i think Industrial Design would be a more fulfilling endeavor.

Goodluck to you on whatever you choose to go through with!

Re: Architecture as a second degree?

Thanks Moji and Violaine,

I actually like the technical aspects of Architecture thats why i also did consider Civil Engineering at one point.

My appreciation for design is actually two folds. The aesthethics and the technical.

To answer Doc's question.... it is two folds, Self gratification and gainful means.

To answer Moji's question.. I do fully intend to get an architect's license and i would love to really practice it and make a career out of it.

The deciding factor will now be time i believe. Time in the sense of, whether or not i have enough of it to study. As for the length of time it takes to finish the course. I dont think 7 years is bad 🙂 rather than 7 years later looking back and regretting not moving my ars* for it

i will be visiting UST this tuesday and see what will happen. That reminds me... i gotta get my crappy transcripts of academic records..

So Moji, how far along are you with your course?

is that due to the workload of the studies? baka kasi due to extra curricular activities eh... :p

Re: Architecture as a second degree?

due to current development (or undevelpment) of the piggery industry (which is currently in crisis due to lower priced LEGAL imports) my future workload is basically reduced by a half.

Hence i am now seriously considering a second degree in architecture. I have requested my transcript and my DIPLOMA (hahaha hindi ko pa kinukuha) from my College and should go to the UP registrar's office sometime this week.

UST for me is way too far. UP is just a stone throw's away from my house.

Moji, which university did you study at?

Sir beebeenator / Sir Ben,

Sir, I've been reading this thread recently and I think your to intention to take a second degree is admirable. If I may, since you are already considering taking up as a second course Architecture or Interior Design, why not try a THIRD option:

Why not try Bachelor of LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE?

It's a course offered only by the University of the Philippines College of Architecture (and I think University of San Carlos in Cebu and university somewhere in Bulacan) as a complimentary to Architecture. It's a course that caters to site works (which includes gardens, of course, as well as woodworking, concrete structures and outdoor features, as well as land planning) and is a good background to have when you have property you want to develop.

My son is a licensed Landscape Architect and according to him, unlike Architecture which takes up 5 years, the course is only 4 years, it's a very creative / design oriented course AND encompasses arts and humanities as well. And the clincher? There's very little Math! 😮

According to him, it's possible to try either the regular Landscape Architecture course or a Masters course in Landscape Architecture, and they're offering it even to non-architecture and Landscape Architecture graduates.

While most of the points enumerated by Arch. Moji apply as well (my son's had his fair share of sleepless nights!)l, it's less technical, and you get the opportunity to travel depending on your courses.

CIGWELD Weldskill 250 amp Mig Welder
AHP Alpha-TIG 200X welder
HITRONIC 300 Amp DC Inverter IGBT Welder
YAMATO 300 amp AC Stick Welder
YAMATO 200 amp DC Inverter IGBT Welder
DeWALT Chopsaw
HOBART and ESAB Welding Helmets
cloned STIHLs
MS 044 chainsaw
MS 070 chainsaw

Re: Architecture as a second degree?

hi ben, am joseph from cebu, also an architect. hehe. Architecture for me is a continuous learning profession, it is evolving which makes it very interesting. but for me the hardest is the schooling, it will eat up all your time, like moji said, all the sleepless night. hehehe. The good thing about graduating and having a license of an architect, its the opportunity. Nowadays, job and work is available if your not choosy. better yet if you have budget for having ur own ofc and business is also a good option.
So ben, if you are prepared for all the sleepness night, hehe, i will support you in ur journey. pm me if you need help in the course. hehe. Landscape Architecture is also a good option since there are few landscape Architect yet. same with Interior Design course.

I think that is a good option, and you should go for it. Though, you do know that with one of the top fake degree maker, you can just get a degree for architecture without doing the hard work. I think that is something most people are doing.
