ok doc, here's a semi serious question. hehehe

1) magkanu po ba ang MRI scan sa may bewang pababa? nahihirapan kasi maglakad ang uncle ko eh.
2) saan yan affordable ang bayad yet quality naman yun images nya para madaling makita. sana meron mura yun below 5k. thanks Doc. :thanks:

Totoo na ba ito mga admin,

May sarili ng thread para kay doc V ? WOW if so then this is just great, finally admin maybe you can compile here previous discussions or replies or maybe advice of doc V on topics regarding health hazards for PHM DIYers doing their personal projects. I know maybe you'll say added workload na naman ito, e mga admin e for the benefit naman ng entire PHM community ito.

Siguro yung every discussion na ma co compile will have its own topic or title for easy reference sa mga babasa, uy mga admin excited ako sa thread na ito. :p :p :p

siguro much better kung magpa consult muna sa orthopeadic surgeon or neurologist ang uncle mo. Kasi ang alam ko walang murang MRI view, last time I'ved heard the cheapest view w/o contrast would cost around 8-10k, sa province yan. Sayang kasi kung magpa MRI sya tapos di naman pala kelangan. HTH

Ok, Doc, a real serious one.

Haven't done any woodworking in years. Am 50 years old (with a body of a 20 year old!!! I wish). Decided to take up the hobby again by building a boat about a year ago.

Now, noticed that I can't clench my empty hands into a tight fist without pain in the middle joints of my pointer and middle fingers in both hands. Am I just overextending myself? Is this a sign of my fading youth?

Some useful info: I haven't noticed any deterioration in my strength but I find I rest more often (probably laziness).

seriously, do you handle chemicals like lacquer? I met someone who said that these chemicals have a tendency to reduce the size of your vein with continuous use. I have had a similar occurence before when I started spray painting, now I wear gloves when I handle chemicals... well if I remember 😀

Amen Brader! I was told that some solvents have been known to cause internal organ problems. The LIVER in particular is affected but missed most of the time coz people suspect the lungs more when it comes to solvents or petroleum products. :confused::eek::detective:

Copy that. Through the years, been careless with paints, lacquer, putties, etc. Never used gloves. Ngayon lang when I started epoxy. I guess when you're young you feel invincible. Pero pag tumatanda na, you get wiser.

Truly, youth is wasted on the young.

first things first...i would like to remind everyone that this thread will not in any way promote any drug or medication..i will also not advise you to have this and that...and this thread is not to be considered my "clinic"...i would like to inform everyone that for you to have a good evaluation by a doctor, you need to be physically present in front of him..so you can forge a doctor-patient relationship...whom you can trust all what you are feeling..so when you tell these things to him he can arrive at a correct diagnosis and ultimately the correct treatment.(sorry i will use the masculine form to refer to a doctor..because in the olden times...there were no women doctors, just nurses or assistants..in fact the father of obstetrics is a male doctor!..there is no "mother" thing in medicine or in science in general)...

but i would like to give you ideas of this and that only to the extent of my knowledge.. i will not claim to know everything..for a doctor who claims to know everything in medicine is something scary!

you do not know my field yet...i am a pathologist by specialty, seen only most of the time inside the dungeon/lab and away from the crowd..a good pathologist should know everything about a disease process, how it came about, its treatment, its course with or without treatment and how the body parts will look like when that part is diseased to the very detail of it under the microscope..pathology is at the forefront of diagnostics//molecular biology..transplantation would no be possible without pathology...we are the doctors doctor..surgeons usually are our clients who operate on patients..and they send to us these body parts or lumps they take out to know whether they are cancerous or not..in short we are sentenshadores..hehe...we are the supervisors inside the laboratories..whom the medtechs consults..we should know how to interpret lab findings..we need to know if the machine is mulfunctioning..for nowadays..most lab tests are machine generated..and certainly we must not be fooled by machines..and they need to be calibrated at times.

when we have medical conferences in the hospital, we are usually the last ones to speak...to give them the exact cause of death and how the lab tests and other things will fit into the picture..these conferences called clinicopathologic conferences are but a must for a training hospital..here the budding surgeon or internist gets the clearer picture..and so he learns from his mistakes...dont get me wrong..these training doctors are under the supervision of the consultants.

not many doctors enter into this field..but i came to like this field because i have more time to do my hobbies...no patients waiting in the clinic..but dont get wrong again..i trained first in internal medicine with soooooo many patients having this and that ailments..but didnt finish and i quit simply because i was sympathizing already with patients/relatives when they only need is empathy...i havent told you my first love is architecture.

all our training was devoted to reading much thicker pathology books, get exposed to hazardous chemicals like formalin and solvents like xylene, to cook those body parts first before we get to examine them under the microscope and interpret things.

meaning to say..i cannot operate on an appendix, do a caesarian section or operate on your brain..but i can tell you all the types of tumor that your body parts can harbor...or when a surgeon tells you you have a Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma...i can tell better...i can also give you a guesstimate when its time to say goodbye.

1. Regarding MRI scan...
--usually a patient is already seen by a doctor/specialist who now requests for a scan.
--the hospital usually will ask for the request but you can always fake this of course as long as you have the money to pay for the scan
--yes a bit expensive than CT scan (e.g. CT scan of the head is around 3k-10k depending on the hospital..of course the most expensive if you go to the medical centers because of the hotel like patient lounges, courteous and often times pretty nurses and of course, the professional fee is much higher..for these specailist doctors are paying for their children studying in good schools and they drive good looking cars etc...)
--the cost of the scan depends on the part being examined...when its the bones, its much cheaper than let say your intestines or internal organs...also usually they need to inject a drug or commonly called contrast material...to see more clearly the organs of interest..sort of a background...but they dont come cheap and they add up to the cost..usually 3k-5k yung contrast.
--although a bit more expensive it is much healthy to have the mri than the ct scan...the mri just uses magnets, no radiation...on the other hand you get exposed to radiation to ct scan..(the contrast material is also but a hazardous material and you needed a good kidney to have it...this material is taken cared of by the kidneys...if you dont have good kidneys then this material will stay in your body for long..one good exmaple of contrast material is gadolinium..sounds like a nuclear power food!..ok google about it..)
-the reason why the scans are expensive is simply due to the cost of the machine...in 2000 perhaps, the cost of a surplus ct scan would fetch at around 30 million..and due to technology they are coming up with.. newer machines that are more powerful (in terms of clarity of the images)...the current machine boasts of "128 slice" but equally the same when you have just a 64 slice ct scans..the mri's dont have these "slices" but rather..they improved on the diameter of the opening trays..for mri have limits in terms of capacity.. body diameter and weight..if you are overweight and too biggie, you wont fit in that hole! (kindly google the picture of the mri)
--if your uncle havent seen a doctor yet..then i would advise him to see one first..perhaps a rehab/orthopaedic specialist..but you know sometimes, there are pains that are only referred pains and not the actual source of pain..and thats the reason why elsewhere (in the UK), you have to be seen by a general practitioner before you get to see a specialist...in the philippines when you have the money, you can be seen by a specialist instantly..and instantly so..can drain your pocket due to extensive tests that they request..because there is often a connotation that these specialists are "thinking more"...hehe..sometimes it pays to see a specialist right away than be seen by a gp...but nowadays we are bringing back another name for the GP thing..it is now a specialty and we call it family medicine..these doctors will train for four years and rotating in different areas of the medical specialty..they can treat newborns, pregnant, minor traumas, circular saw accidents and other what nots.

more to come..gotta prep myself and see the lab...eat apples or better fruit salad to keep the doctors at bay.

just to add characteristics of different life stages...in my opinion

newborns till childhood--very much dependent on parents..
teens--puppy love, crush, body piercing, etc.., justin bieber,peer pressure (inom/yosi..trying out new things..)
20's--careless, freewilly, nagbibilang ng girlfriends/boyfriends, driving under the influence of...
30's-work and relationship..
40's-more work to feed more mouth, declining vision, hi blood sets in..., nanunud na ng CNN/BBC, concern na sa global warming, concern how to economize, stove versus electric water heater...trying out to repair a leaking pipe ending up spending more buying tools for this and that..hehe
50's-thinking of retiring..finding out new things..like gardening..naglulupa in short...kinakausap na mga halaman at bulate...nagiging palasimba na...
60's--frequents more the church...and excited to get a senior citizen card..hahahaha!

so where do you belong guys???

that "frozen" pain in your hands? its called osteoarthritis, from overuse...dont worry its gone by noon time..di ba? hehe..remember ligaments become old as well..and become less stretchable and stiff and so you feel pain..but once the ligaments are stretched then the pain goes away..it could be a sign of rheumatoid arthritis as well.

a good day po sa inyo mga masters..

meron na po siya referral from an orthro experts at meron din siya reseta at nag take siya ng potassium supplement for now po. totoo po niresetahan siya ng pain reliever na ibrufupen (mahal ang presyo).

actually po sir nandito kami sa zambales at walang MRI scan dito except po sa BAY POINT HOSPITAL in SBMA pero none operational pa daw ( meron ng yung MRI machine pero wait na lang daw yun malaking aircon para sa scanning room)

so no choice sila kundi ang magbyahe to manila para diyan magpa scan. due to limited budget po eh sa Delos Reyes ata sila pupunta. meron po ba kayo maisuggest na alternative or mairekomendang hospital....
