since a lot of us will be meeting on Saturday May 1, I suggest that we make a small group already. We can organize a group to handle purchases and sourcing of tools and materials. we can also have someone handle shipping for outside sourcing. let us start opening our possibilities to the world. we can even produce things for people already and we can make our commissioned prices uniform or just a standard to base on...
what would you guys think and suggest? I need inputs here pls.

Re: let us organize ourselves...

I'd say go for it.

The group here might take a cue from the PHBYC which has no formal organization or membership for that matter. The only thing really publicly claimed is its name. The group does its "projects" through what is called a Proponent. A Proponent is essentially the project leader of an activity as well as the "owner" of the project, "owner" meaning all the receipts are to his name, along with everything else. Members volunteer and do have a say however the Proponent will have the last say. There are advantages and disadvantages to this kind of organization however any form will have its pro and cons.

Re: let us organize ourselves...

No Suggestion here as of yet. But it sure is a great idea. Especially having the opportunity of having works commisioned. There is both satisfaction in excelling in a hobby as well as being able to bring home the bacon in some way with it.

One thing we should look at is the quality of work. As the group grows bigger and more people join inthe hobby. We not be that aware of the quality of work capable by everyone. We can say that once its commissioned to a certain individual then its between that individual and the client, however pinoyhandyman.com's reputation will still be at stake in one way or the other.

Unfortunately i pointed out a potential challenge without a solution. Just thought i'd let you guys know. Well right now as the community here is still small, an honesty basis or a good responsibility of assessing one's capabilities should be reliable enough.

my two cents

Re: let us organize ourselves...

the concern about pinoyhandyman's reputation doesn't have to come in play here. I will give an example. I now somebody that needs a platform bed, since the source will come from me, I will have to be the project leader. I can assign several jobs for those interested, lie I can have Moji do the platforms, You do the base and Jay do the finishing and I do the approval :). though it doesn't have to be that complicated, lie I do the woodwork and somebody do the finishing, I can share the work with someone who excels in his field, that way I not only share the profit, I also get better quality.
though my main purpose for organizing really is tools and materials acquisition from outside sources, this is also an option I can think of. lie somebody would be in charge of ordering and everyone that wants something will course his order through one person. of course we pay him in advance for our orders. btw, it won't be me as I am not good at this....

Re: let us organize ourselves...

Commissioned works ... for fun I guess would be ok but I think once a bottom line is applied such might not be so much fun anymore ... at least for me. I am always at odds with this when someone asks me to build a boat for them. I agree 100% with what Timber said that one would stand as the Proponent or Main Contractor while the rest would be subs.

Group purchases are difficult if not impossible in my experience. Individuals always want different things, and at different times. Best might be to arrange for a common shipment, I can tell you guys how this can be done, some probably already know.

What I'd really like to see are activities that propagate the DIY spirit. At the PHBYC, we conduct an annual Family Boatbuilding Weekend as well as accept requests to conduct it for a specific group or organization. We also offer (informally) free sailboat rides and very introductory lessons. How about "Build a Birdhouse Day" or "An Introduction to Carpentry for Young and Not So Young Adults".

Just my 2c. Keep the ideas coming.
