Re: midnight club...

well if the milton would improve with a Jacobs chuck, it should be better still than a new dp...

Re: midnight club...

The Jap Hitachi DP cost around 30K+ last time I inquired in T. Alonzo IIRC. Record is good too. I'm saving for a good welder pa so this is in the back burner.

Re: midnight club...

If you havent' come across this, here's a guidline for DPs for metalworking sir JayL.

.004" = .01mm

I dunno why but he didn't mention about the total expected TIR, or what the workpiece sees. I mean, the chuck is held by the arbor which goes into the spindle, which is pressed onto the bearings housed inside the quill, and the quill goes to the head casting... easy to see that runout in any component gets magnified by runout in other parts.

With what i have, the TIR of the whole shebang is .007". OWWM guru Bob Vaughn tunes DPs at around .004".

==
Nothing wrong with keyed chucks, it's just that i've used keyless and am spoiled by them ^_^. And hey the price was right too. The metabo's free, and the rohm supra was had at less than 1.5K. There was a time when i had to drill 1/2" inch holes in metal, pilot hole it with 1/4" first then the 1/2" bit, took me 3 hours to finish several dozen pieces. It was easy to connect and disconnect bits.

cencia na, will clean them after this post.

Re: midnight club...

glad you posted Owyn, I was kinda hoping you would on this matter. anyway here is the added info on that particular chuck...

  • Precision tested and certified to .0016-Inch T.I.R. maximum at half capacity
  • All parts are hardened for maximum accuracy and rigidity.
  • Self-tightening feature for maximum gripping power
  • Integrated shank design provides a unit of greater rigidity and precision
  • For CNC machining centers in drilling, boring, counter-boring and milling operations requiring heavy penetration

Re: midnight club...

Bro if you get chance pls post the clamps you purchased today. It's always good to know and see new tools that can probably be applicable to each others application. I checked the clamps at Panda and these seem to be sturdy. I note that these were not on display. Did not even know they had these.

I just read in garage journal that some US Ace Hardware stores will be selling Craftsman Tools. I hope our local stores do the same.

tks
