hello po mga braders, I just want to get some inputs regarding my shop problem, I have a 14 sqm of shop space, which is the second floor of my little house. My shop is merely a shop for repairing Electronics(TV,DVD etc.),Computers, Laptops and Cellphones but mostly Computers & Laptops but this time I want to add a woodworking Workbench since I want to take another step as woodworking hobbyist. As I've said in my introduction in this forum, i'm from Taytay, Rizal & I grew up with a Woodshop beside our house, I'm very much interested in woodworking...but my problem is the space. The picture of my shop in 360 degrees....

My recent WIP(please don't laugh.. I build this due to necessity but with budget constraint & without woodworking training hehehe!)built with just 1/2" plywood.

the table on the right was my first table build when i was 13 yrs old.

this is the side where i want to put the woodworking workbench(sana)

some of my cheap powertools!hehehe!the wall dividing my shop and our bedroom.

here are some of my problems:
1. I don't have any other space in my house(no garage or what ever) so I have to maximize my shop.
2. since I repair Computers & Laptops, Dust will be a very big deal.
3. oh did I say that I also have a photography equipment in this shop, Photography was once my bread & butter, so dust again is a no no!
4. the side where i want to put my Workbench, two working computers will be sacrifice.

please share some insights or suggestions.
Don't have enough funds for a full renovation!

Re: Shop Design dilemma

First of all, you got to clean some clutter :detective:
design your workbench to have some storage space, preferably thin drawers to take in lots of small items. keeping your things inside containers or drawers make them safe from dust.
Dust on the otherhand is almost unavoidable in woodworking, so a very good dust collection is vital but will also need space that makes your place even smaller.
I can suggest a folding type of workbench though not as heavily built as some but would work just fine. what do you intend to do anyway? information could tell us what would work better for you.

Re: Shop Design dilemma

Bro, some dilema there ha ? May I FIRMLY SUGGEST that you do your new hobby not on the same floor or room, work on it on a separate room or downstairs, you will be sacrificing a lot when it comes to dust as said by timber, your computers, other electronic gadgets, photography stuffs and the rest plus the possibly unwanting noise when you start cutting up plywoods or plyboards,:eek: common sense bro, common sense.

Good luck on your new hobby and do think well about the situation. Nothing against you or your new hobby, just being practical here bro. :rolleyes:

-----------------------

A little OT here ; I wonder bro why you have not signed up yet sa EASTERN RIZAL group of PHM diyers since like what you said you are presently residing in Taytay Rizal. I made this thread just to know how many of us PHM member DIYers are coming from this side, who knows someday we can have an EB of all coming from the Eastern side and get to know each other well. THANKS.

Re: Shop Design dilemma

What is said about the dust and electronics not mixing up makes a lot of sense.

Hmmm maybe you can get away with woodworking in your shop ... manual woodworking.

I would suggest that the dust would seriously compromise your other activities.
Is there space for you to add a w/shop outside your house?

Re: Shop Design dilemma

Thanks po sa mga Replies...
@sir rosy
sir the first floor is reserved to SWMBO, no other room is available, sabi nga ni misis kahit ano ilagay mo sa taas(2nd floor) di nya pakikialaman basta sa kanya ang 1st floor(Living & dining room with her Highspeed sewing machine & edging machine, nagsa subcon ng RTW) so no way talaga sa 1st floor.
@sir JayL
Manual wood working is fine since i'm able to build some of my previous Wips without power tools. And yes Electronics, specially computers & dust is a bad mix. What i previously did was cover all my computers/laptops & other gadgets with blanket while I'm doing some cutting or sanding. but sometimes none at all,just clean it up after.
@sir frankboase
No other place,not even outside the house since I live in a compound with 2 meters driveway.

SWMBO said that if I really want to do all these things, I should consider buying a new House with garage! which of course is not feasible at this moment of time!hehehe!but this dilemma will not stop me from doing i like to do! If there's a will, there's a way!

Re: Shop Design dilemma

brad if possible...
do the cutting, sanding or anything your going to use power tools,
or anything dust is the main concern, outside the house...

then assemble or finish it inside, the result is less or no dust...
it is tedious, but once you see your results, tangal pagod mo...
cheers !!!

Outside the house is not possible since we live in a compound(looban) and for sure neighbors will react when i do those things in our compound since it is not an open area at all! Sometimes I do my cutting in our sala if SWMBO isn't around. Well that's another dilemma, my SWMBO has an asthma and allergic to dust!whew!

MannyM, Wow grabe, napalaki tuloy dilemma mo, but of course, IF THERE'S A WILL, THEN THERE IS A WAY.

Bro, I have a suggestion, layout your room on a paper and try to position your tables, computer gadgets, electronic, everything existing now, see if you can add shelves to de clogged clutters, well in good, then set aside a wall or a space for your mini woodshop and then enclose or install a partition with a clear acrylic walling para maliwanag pa rin, of course you will have to add an entrance or a small door, be creative and imaginative on how you will arrange your work stations and other tools. 😉

Siguro by doing this way you will be able to envision how to arrange your various stuffs. :p:rolleyes:

Hope this helps bro. 🙂

Re: Shop Design dilemma

Hmm..the list of things against you woodworking seems to be growing. Be very careful of the dust and asthma of your wife. Do you have funds to make some sort of floor to ceiling divider? Something which can fold out of the way when you are not woodworking. Also maybe you can start make an integrated wall cabinet/workstation for your electronic stuff as well , your space looks so cluttered.

Integrated wall cabinet/workstation are part of the plan,right now i dont have enough funds but i can do something about that,pwedeng paunti-unti ang pag acquire ng materials, and yes po another very good idea to have foldable dividers.. thanks sir moji! hehehe!yes too cluttered sir since i don't have any cabinet or other storage.

OT
I post those pictures of my shop on another forum for Electronics and they told me that my shop looks clean, masyado daw po maayos baka daw hindi nagagamit itong shop na ito for any activities..hehehe!

Re: Shop Design dilemma

my suggestion would be go hand tools, your space would be adequate for it, plus dust would be very minimal and easily controlled. take your sweet time making stuff as you enjoy your hobbies. Handtool work is very fulfilling and frustrating sa well....
