Why are you stuck on just two choices? Because these are the used cars being offered to you?
Look around. As important as getting the right car is getting the right car in the right condition. Don't limit yourself strictly to two.
A 2001 RAV4 is a nice car. It's a great car. It drives well, has a punchy engine, and if you opt for the 2WD version, fuel economy isn't that bad compared to a 1.6 liter sedan.
But it's a ten year old car. If it hasn't been maintained properly... or even if it has been maintained properly but has done lots and lots of kilometers, things will break. And some of those things, like gearboxes and differentials and engine sensors are uncommon and rather expensive if you're used to maintaining a regular 1.3 or 1.6 liter sedan. It's not quite as hard as finding parts for the old 2.2 Camry, but it's not exactly easy.
A later-model Avanza is not as comfortable (though it rides better), not as solid (it rattles more and the hinges feel soft) and is not as stable to drive, but it has lots of space and is economical. The big kicker, though, is whether it's in good condition. The seat foam is thin and the joints tend to get noisy over time. Also, it doesn't share any parts whatsoever with the Vios, despite both being 1.3 - 1.5 liter cars. The engine is completely different. So parts may not be as common as you think, but given that the 1.3s are being made into taxis, at least suspension and brake parts should be common.
It's VERY important to view the cars and assess their current condition before making your choice. Along the way, you may also want to look at other secondhand cars of varying vintages and brands. What do you want? Something rugged and economical, like a Crosswind or an Innova? Or something comfy, for family use, like an Altis or a Civic?
