Just want to show some work i do with aluminum, here's an example of hammerforming with an aluminum buck that i made. Before i used mdf or wood but that only lasts a few times till it gets beaten up, the part starts off as 3.5mm aluminum sheet thats cut to shape and then annealed to soften the metal and prevent cracking while forming.... then its clamped on the buck for shaping....

Re: Aluminum metal working

after one side of the part is shaped, then its turned around to shape the other side,

Here's the fully shaped part before trimming the edges off.

HEY bro butch11a,

I knew it when I saw this image of yours, the welded pipe fittings and the welds on the cylinder, truly the welds were very evident that you are using a Tig welder, really very nice weld bead applications !!!! :chopper:

This is great, another metal worker in the community, and a PRO Tig welder pa. :cool01:

Re: Aluminum metal working

what ampere settings are you using on aluminum tig welding?

i usually start at around 140 amps while the metal is cold and i lower it down to 120 when its already hot, although i don't really reach those currents since i use a footpedal to control the amps while i weld, just want to have the amps ready when i need it during cold starts.....it really depends on the thickness of the material, the type of alloy, the size of the tungsten electrode, the mass of the metal....

interesting, now I am getting slightly mixed up. Since aluminum tig welding requires a 300 amp and up welder and you can weld at much lower amps that my welder can reach... hmmmm, is there a reason why I would need a 300 amp tig welder as opposed to a 200amp welder for aluminum applications?

Re: Aluminum metal working

with my 200 amp welder i can weld 3/8 in. aluminum plate right away, 1/2 in will need pre heating. i think the biggest single phase welder is around 200 amps, anything bigger would be a 3 phase machine, which is why i plan to make a phase converter for future upgrade....

Re: Aluminum metal working

The Miller Synchrowave of Butch is a 200 Amp AC / DC welder. AC is required for aluminum tig welding.

Please correct me if I am wrong.
