Any local shops selling this item?

http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/38x12routercolletadapter.aspx

I need it to attach a forstner bit with 3/8 shank to the plunge router. I'll be making a lot of holes
for concealed hinges.

Re: 1/2 x 3/8 collet adapter

the lowest speed i think for a variable speed router is 9000RPM.

please observe safety and i dont think that forstners especially that size (32mm for concealed hinges installation) can be used for such a purpose.

but i could be wrong but id rather use a hand drill if i dont have a drill press in case.

How about a drill guide?

Re: 1/2 x 3/8 collet adapter

Hahaha! I was kind of expecting this type of response. Thanks doc for making me rethink this approach.

My VS router can go down to 8,000 RPM (at least according to the manual). But this is still way beyond the recommended speeds for forstner bits. Did some googling:

For softwood and smallest diameter (less than 1/2) forstner the fastest recommended speed is 2500 RPM. For 1 1/4 and above max is only 700 RPM. I'll be using 1 3/8 diameter for the concealed hinges.

Sayang. The router edge guide and the plunge base seems perfect for this task in the absence of a drill press.

I'll think I should instead work on mounting the VS hand drill to the router's plunge base.

EZcut actually has a 35mm router bit (not a forstner) precisely to be used for that purpose. I have one and used it several times and works well, but it came with a 1/2" shank. You can use it too on the drill press if you wish without issues. Not even needed to dial it to the lowest speed, though at 22,000rpm, it is too much. I recommend somewhere in the 12,000 rpm or lower.

Is that the Ezcut 'hinge boring bit' #2803? Ezcut website says that the shanks are 10 mm. Is website mistaken?

Power Craft also has hinge boring bits in 1/4 and 1/2 shanks (not 10 mm), at about half the cost.

Re: 1/2 x 3/8 collet adapter

sir timber & Jarod
thanks for the reply to my inquiry. I have a triton router. I got a good news today, my makita router RP2301FCX just arrived and when I opened the box a 1/2" to 3/8" collet reducer is included in the package. All along I thought only a 1/4" collet adapter was included. I can use now my 3/8" bit..
