I saw the prices and I just can't say No. but it won't stay long in my shop. somebody is buying it already for 3K. with that I am considering getting a Real CMS, most probably a Makita LS1040. I hope I can find myself a good deal as well. but that is hoping too much. lol...

Re: Bargain Alerts

Hey that's a pretty good killing! Maybe someone would like to buy my mine too since I actually don't use it much anymore. Normally I use a 10" sliding compound miter saw, or SCMS as you would put it. Consider getting a SCMS as these can handle much wider materials than those that do not slide.

ADDED:

I found a picture of the saw.

Re: Bargain Alerts

Be careful of some bargain power tools from HMR, Makro and SOS. If you notice, most of these are from Australia or China. They are rated at 220 volts 50 Hz.

First issue is the voltage. Our actual CO voltage here in the Philippines is 240 volts. Some say a diff of 20 volts doesn't matter for power tools but sometimes continuous use can cause damaged motors, capacitors, etc. As in my Bosch cordless drill charger, it started out as a low hum emitted by the transformer coil that eventually burned and melted the casing. I ended up buying a new US version charger which was just as expensive as the entire surplus drill set.

The ac current frequency also affects the speed of motors and frequency-controlled devices such as clocks, VCRs, and other appliances with transformers. This is also why China made Compact Fluorescent bulbs sold in Binondo tend to flicker.

So sometimes a bargain is not really a bargain after all....

Re: Bargain Alerts

Yup, especially be wary of those with AC induction motors. There are posts about this elsewhere but it has to do with the reactance of the motor that results in lower mechanical power and higher heat output. A transformer is essentially an AC motor but instead it converts electrical energy into electrical energy (of different voltage/current values). So adapators of cordless tools will have a tendency to put out less power, and to heat up. So charging could take longer but more importantly such an adaptor could burnout.

So far I've been lucky. I have 3 18v GMC cordless drills that I frequently use, and 6 battery packs. I only use one adaptor to charge these and on a busy weekend the adaptor is always running. I've had these for at least 2 years now, so far so good.

The situation is a lot less perilous with tools that use a universal motor. These are those with brushes like grinders, drills, jigsaws, circular saws, routers, sanders, etc. etc. The reason is these motors are actually AC to DC converters. I'm an electrical engineer but to be totally honest I've not really done the math so it is up to you. I've a whole shop full of these that I use quite a bit though only as a hobbist, extreme maybe, and like I said so far so good. By the way, my compressor, table saw and drill press are all induction motor driven but these are all 60Hz motors.

I have, unfortunately the SCMS cost at least double that of the CMS. I have plans of getting a table saw as soon as Makita comes out with the new model MLT100. with that, I can do my larger cuts on the table and miters on the CMS.

about those imported tools, I am more concerned of the hertz it needs than the power requirement. 50Hz is really bad connected to a 60Hz outlet. it not only changes the speed it also affects the heat generated. I'm certain that most power tool that are rated for 220V can take 240V with little concern, these tend to have a buffer if you will, to accept up to a certain voltage. I'm no electrical engineer, its just what I picked up on the net. .02c

Re: Bargain Alerts

Yup that's right but only for induction motors.

Digital clocks are also a no-no. One designed for 50Hz will seem to warp time by running 20% faster! The problem is not the transformer if it has one. It runs faster because these clocks measure time by counting the cycles of electricity. Just buy a quartz clock they are cheap anyway.

About the saw, the truth is I bought it for P3,500 when these Australian tools first hit the market. It made sense at the time since this was only 20% of what other brands were being sold for. So I'm kind of stuck in between not wanting to take a loss, and not really needing it anymore. I do use it from time to time like when I need to do a lot of cutting a bit away from the workshop.

We're off topic here so I try to get it back on topic by mentioning these Nicholson saw blades being sold. I bought one a long time ago and was quite happy with it. Their prices, even when on sale, are ok.

Yes. Gearwrench is manufactured by KD Tools which is a division Danaher Tool Group.

www.gearwrench.com

I will sell the set for 3,200 pesos. It's how much I bought it excluding shipping charges.

Re: Bargain Alerts

Or even just where there are Binondo prices without having to go to Binondo.
BOOB -- 'Binondo prices outside of Binondo'

Panda Construction Supply (tools store mentioned in thread on rotary/Dremel tools) has a branch at 405 E.T. Yuchengco St., formerly Nueva St., Binondo, 242-6154 as well as at 340-B G. Araneta Ave., Sta. Mesa., Quezon City, 716-8361.

Are there any other Binondo stores that have non-Binondo branches, and so are likely to have BOOB?

Re: Bargain Alerts

I happened to pass by Makro beside main st. cubao a week ago and stumbled upon a rack full of cheap power tools. Named TOOL MASTER, i bought a cordless drill for Php999, a bit sluggish but can do well on small drill works and screwing...a mini grinder and a jig saw with the same price also...

I saw a router machine cost at P1450, a 4" angle grinder at 1,200 and power drill at 1000 im not exactly sure about the figures but they were at that price range.... China made though..but comes with 1 yr warranty...may help as back up tools in case yours broke down.

While "real" tools are great, I'd rather be DIYing that waiting to hit the lotto :).
