Just want to ask how you guys deal with power tool noise. i live in a subdivision and i'm afraid my neighbors might complain about the noise especially when i'm using the table saw and planer. what i do is is just limit my power tool use to one hour in the afternoon. ano ba ang batas tungkol dito?

Re: Shop Noise

I am glad i still dont have neighbors left and right of my subdivision and kaharap ko rotonda.

But if i do eventually get neighbors, i will be double walling my workshop area with noise dampening materials, acoustic boards and such. maybe 10-15K since i only need to wall one side of my semi-basement

How is your work area setup?

Sorry i cant help you with relevant laws

Re: Shop Noise

may kapit bahay kasi kami both sides. i'll take pictures para mapakita sa inyo. i might use one of the rooms in the house na may access sa labas. if i use that dalawang window tatakpan ko with mdf and rubber. takot lang ako habang hindi ko pa ginagawa yun eh magreklamo na yung kapit bahay.

Re: Shop Noise

@crazyboi,

forget the laws if there are indeed laws.just mind that you have neighbors who dont want noise just like you.

the most notorious will be the router (especially the laminate trimmer gmr1) i believe, followed by the circular saw, then the thickness planer...and of course the shopvac brand of vacuum.

you can double wall the side with windows and stuff it up with 1" thick foam insulation or otherwise i see some foaming sprays at surplus shops.this way you can minimise noise.

i suggest you maximise powertool use between 9am till 12nn..and the less noisy work in between. this means a little planning ahead.

thankfully i have a vacant lot on either side.

hope this helps.

Re: Shop Noise

I doubt if there would be complains during the day but night time would probably be a different story.

Re: Shop Noise

I have neighbors too, what i do is work from 9am-5pm at the most 6pm. No one has complained so far. I think as long as you work within those hours (regular construction and work hours) they wont complain. Of course i dont work everyday. I have worked saturdays and sundays but not often.

Re: Shop Noise

router isn't really that noisy since it is under the table most of the time for me, what I believe bothers others is the CMS...
working during 10am to 2pm works best for me, I do have several neighbors, left, right, up down and on their sides too:thatsit:the only time I had a complaint was when I was using the jigsaw cutting metal at 2am:fartysmile1f: which I didn't admit of course :whistle:
but besides noise, also consider the dust you will be creating....:twister3:

Re: Shop Noise

Working inside the room (or in the toilet as one of the members did) makes a lot of difference in the noise. Just make sure that you have good air circulation or just cut inside and work outside for the rest of the work.

Re: Shop Noise

@timber,

ah yes the cms..but work with the cms will just be in bursts unlike the CS..and the dust! the dust! 😡

i can imagine a sheet metal being cut on a jigsaw.

ear muffs with plastic liner can easily get hot...me peltor ba na hindi plastic?

Re: Shop Noise

Sir Crazyboi_6,
I had the same issue - worse was that I was even visited by the barangay tanod because my neighbor complained 🙂 There are no laws really on noise - it is more of an inconvenience. My rott proved to be the culprit in that our neighbors were afraid to approach me as they feared the dog - grrr.

When we got to meet the party who complained, I explained what we were doing and that we were not engaged in any large scale business type operation - typically diy stuff lang. Nagkataon lang siguro na medyo napasobra yung gana sa paggamit ng power tools (cut wood to size) na hindi na nakayanan ang ingay.

The barangay captain and our neighbor were really very understanding in that they said sometimes there will be inconveniences. We had an agreement na the noise will be reduced to zero in a week's time. Puro martilyo naman maririnig nya :). However, I pointed out that because of the nature of the DIY that we can not help but generate noise. I will limit it to times where it will be more tolerable (9am - 12n, 3-5pm only.) And this has allowed me to get away with it.

I guess it's really taking time to talk to the neighbor (which I should have done before I started the project) and telling them na baka maingay kung pede pagpasencyahan na lang muna kasi saglit lang naman. And also understand their needs for quite time as well.
