hi,
this sounds ironic, but price is usually proportional to quality and more often or never would you find good quality for such a low price...
but there are instances where you don't need highly priced materials for some things like squares, rules, etc...
mall and other big store prices are killing me... not to mention that they are mostly chiwanese. e.g. an unbranded 18" square costs 300/pc, a 12" quick release clamp costs 600/pc...
where do you buy your relatively cheap tools?
Re: where do you buy relatively cheap tools
Binondo area. Much cheaper than mall prices but one needs to spend some time around the place to get to know it.

Re: where do you buy relatively cheap tools
I wonder if we have a list of some recommended shops that we could refer to, Binondo or not. This could be a good thread or I could start a new one that would serve as a directory of some sort.
I'll probably wait for other responses before creating a new thread to avoid unnecessary clutter.

not really, prices tend to change without warning, best check or inquire at the "bargains alert thread"

Re: where do you buy relatively cheap tools
Hi timber,
Actually what we meant was more of a list of "Recommended Shops" thread instead of something like a "Price Update" thread.
Since we all know that pricing may differ from each person, day of the year, mood of the saleslady, etc., having a list of shops with contact number would enable most of us to do "telephone shopping" first.
It would be a more practical way of buying since you save gas and moreso time. Besides, some may even discover that there is a good shop just near his area after all.

oh, that would be ok I guess...

Re: where do you buy relatively cheap tools
actually guys we already have a sub-forum for that ,Shop Directory right below building materials section . However, its in a rather dismal state.
And funny thing is there is a listing there about aluminum sheets/plates which i am also canvassing.
Re: where do you buy relatively cheap tools
would you want the mother of all woodworking tools at the best prices? well, you have to go to Kaoshung Taiwan... if anybody is going or want to now, I will let you now, but you have to buy for me too... 🙂
oh well, here it is anyway. a lot of tools sold in woodcraft and rocler and other stores come from here.... http://www.tool-r-us.com/index.php

Right, there appears to be a 'Shop Directory' sub-forum for each top-level forum for which it makes sense to have a directory, most notably the Tools forum and the Building Materials forum.
In such a 'Shop Directory' sub-forum, you could organize the directory in at least two ways:
Option 1 -- One thread per store.
Option 2 -- One thread per type of store/tool/material/etc. Within a thread, one message per store of that type.
The directory sub-forums that have some content (though still minimal) have started to be organized in Option 2 style. Problem with Option 2 is that classification can be a can of worms, in general.
Unless there is a clearcut classification scheme that will not have problems like overlap, or unless there is well-defined type, I would lean towards Option 1. This option has the advantage that comments or updated info for a particular store can be posted as replies to the original message.
Hybrid of Options 1 and 2 is also possible, as 'appropriate'.
