Hello sa lahat,

Our compressor has stopped working efficiently, even after 10 minutes na umaandar di man lang umaabot ng 40 PSI. Lately lang nangyari ito dahil for several years Ok naman siya.

You guys know reliable service technician ng Vespa 1/2 HP Air Compressor na pwedeng mag home service in Manila area?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Air Compressor Repair

Did you try the store you originally bought it from? Be careful though, there are a lot of "fake Vespa" air compressors out there - it's hard to tell them from the real ones.

There is an air compressor shop along Araneta avenue between E.Rodriguez and Quezon Ave. but it's near the stoplight of Q.Avenue. I forgot the name but you are sure to find it as there are a lot of compressors displayed w/c are being repaired. Going to the root of your problem, If your unit looses compression you can diagnose by leak checking. Sometimes a loose fitting or a crack in the copper line or the regulator cut off switch malfunctions are the simpler issues you may have. My worry is if not one of these isn't the culprit then your piston rings may have to be replaced. Also don't forget to clean the air filters in the compressor head. If they get clogged with debris or impurities then that is one possible reason why air isn't properly charged. Never forget to drain water that gets accumulated overtime under the belly of your tank . Hope this helps.

@ainsley,

We called and they did tell us to bring it there na lang. My problem though is time and effort of hauling it there. So I was hoping for (if available ) ang mga home service. I've no idea whether that is genuine Vespa. It worked for some 8 years na with almost daily use - sa dental clinic kasi so medyo sulit na rin.

@Willyfernando,

Draining - done it.
Leaks - I listened closely to some hissing sounds but there is none, unless there could be a leak that is not making any sound (then that would be a slow leak)
cut-off switch does not even activate since the PSI never reaches above 40 even for 10minutes of running na.

I'm worried about a bigger problem na.

Anyway, thanks for the tip on the shop Willy, I'll go visit them one of these days.

(OT - Pinoyhandyman is not sending email notifications? I have this thread set at 'Instant Notification' but nada)

Re: Air Compressor Repair

Pls note of the following items:

Oil level and condition- When you drain the oil in a pan check for metal shavings or fine residue resembling dust or sand. If there are,then most likely you are to replace the piston rings and may have to check the pistons themselves or the chamber for run out. Also try to use fully synthetic oil like 5W 30 or 10W 30 so the oil reaches the internal parts quickly and smoothly. I also use 5GS compressor oil w/c car aircon shops use if I want something cheaper but can do the job as the FS oil. Pls make it a habit to change the oil completely as topping it is only applicable at the first year of purchase if it is continuos or heavy use. As for me I change my oil twice a year thus my 1996 1HP Vespa compressor is still on the job. I am a pro finisher and my unit runs continuously for 14 hours a day all year round.

Check valve- This part may also have something to do with the problem as the charged air is not kept in storage securely and may back flow.

Cylinder head- On top of this part on the intake side of the Air filter port there are parts that need to be cleaned of dust and debris that may have made their way in due to poor filter condition. Change the filter media to a better material. Though it is made out of foam look for a lesser dense foam and wrap it in 3m aircon filter sheets or something similar that can do the dust filtering. There are 2 pcs of thin metal plates or fins inside the top head that may have cracks or deformation. This may also contribute to the problem.

The shop is actually at the opposite of VICTOR HARDWARE, the dealer of SWAN compressors. Coming from E. Rdoriguez turn right at Araneta and before you hit the stoplight of Q. Ave you will see a small shop on your right. You won't miss it as you may see old compressors on display.

Re: Air Compressor Repair

While I am aware that using a regular air compressor in dentistry is common practice in the Philippines, please note that technically, a dental air compressor should be used. Here's an article that explains the difference:

http://www.air-compressor-guide.com/learn/air-compressor-uses/dental-compressor/

Most notable is this:
"The air that is produced by the compressor is used directly in human mouths. They will inhale the air and swallow any contaminations that is within the compressed air."

As well as:
"Of course, you won’t taste a little water in the compressed air, nor will it be toxic. But, water in the compressed air system will increase the risk of bacteria growth. So you really want to have water-free air coming from your compressor."

More importantly, I was talking to my dentist about this once. She was saying that using a regular air compressor also poses a risk to the dental equipment.

I know a specialized dental air compressor is significantly more expensive, but it might be worthwhile.

Re: Air Compressor Repair

@Willy,

Thanks for the ton of information you've shared, that surely enlightened me with the possible issues with this compressor. I brought the rig to the repair folks and I'd be waiting for their assessment tomorrow on what is wrong with it.

@Ainsley,

I've talked to my wife (the dentist πŸ˜‰ about and she does agree that it can be worth considering in her next upgrade. Thanks for the tip.

There are several types of filtration that can resolve your concerns. A suitable Air, oil and water separator/filter is installed to eliminate contaminants in the line going to the outlet. There are also pre-filters tagged as Hepa filters w/c aid in applications such as dental or medical in nature. There are also special filters that aid in Gas or vapor elimination going to the line discharge like TECH WEST INC.'s Air and Water separator with Vapor Stop. Here is a good read on the subject of air compressors for medical/dental applications - http://www.bcga.co.uk/assets/HTM_2022_S1.pdf
A greater majority of air compressor used in Dentistry is to power air operated tools or instruments like the Hand piece and the 2-way syringe. However you have stressed a valid point that some our practitioners have missed or failed to consider and this post is very timely. Incidentally my wife is also a Dentist specializing in Orthodontics thats why I am a bit experienced on the subject. Good thing these filters aren't that hard to find nowadays unlike before when she was starting sometime in the early 90's. πŸ™‚

Re: Air Compressor Repair

Just to update all on this, it was fortunate that what it needed was just a replacement of gaskets.

Thanks all for your contributions πŸ™‚
