This thread was requested by Bro Rosy.

Let's post our experiences and tools about this subject. Probably we can start with Technical Information that we come across so we can all read and study. Tool links will be good too.

Re: All about Drill Bits, Taps and Dies

Any info on possible locally available taps and die sources? I think that would be a good spring board to those who might find it useful and eventually invest in quality Norseman items.

Re: All about Drill Bits, Taps and Dies

Hi Jarod ..

Panda , LYS and Yale Hardwares.

Good local sources for Taps and Dies.

Panda has Dormer and Alpen drill bits. English and Austrian made respectively.

Most taps I see locally are Japanese made.

I too have very limited experience bro. I can tap holes and that's it. I'm sure there is a lot still to be learned and if we share all together we could make the learning process faster.

For using dies I have zero experience for now.

Please post what you come up with your research so we can all benefit.

This is a good site for info on bolts.

http://www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/

Taps need corresponding drill bits to bore the holes. Usually these bits can be purchased by piece at Panda. ( i.e. 8.7mm drill bit for 10mm x 1.5 tap @ 75% depth of thread)

This formula below works too :

In order to find an appropriate drill bit size for a given tap. Just subtract the thread pitch to the tap size.

Let's say 10mm x 1.5 tap

Drill bit size = 10mm - 1.5 = 8.5mm

The same goes for Standard Taps but it's just in factions.

OK, and yes let's wait also from bro RYOBI on what he can say or contribute to this thread, and also calling other members to chime in, post your experience and expertise in using this tool, so that others may learn too.

Thanks a lot po.

Re: All about Drill Bits, Taps and Dies

The last time i tapped a hole was on my benchwork and forging class back in college. We also used the lathe machine to make threads on a large bolt then. i have a generic tap and die set and the last time i used the die was when i rethreaded the bolts on the turbo impeller housing. i use wd-40 when making threads so as not to overheat the tool and the part as well. the die wrench used for pipeworks have a ratcheting handle also. tried one at school.

Re: All about Drill Bits, Taps and Dies

I am intrigued by these new Bosch Drill Bits. A single drill bit that can work with multiple materials. Wood, Stone, Metals and probably much more. The tip design is not conventional and so are the flutes. I hope to give these a run down and see the performance. My only concern for now is how to re sharpen. Looking at the bit tip it seems that a Drill Doctor can be used but this I have to try out first.

Re: All about Drill Bits, Taps and Dies

Jay thought those are multi material bits, I highly recommend you use them for tile which they excel most. They work well with concrete as well but must you want them to keep their edge longest, stay clear of metal (though they work fine on them too).

Re: All about Drill Bits, Taps and Dies

You're right Timb.

Here I tested the bit on mild steel .... 1/2" thick.

I center drilled ... 1/8" deep ...

Slow even feed ... it makes fine chips ... the tip is very hard and can bore through 1/2" thick mild steel. Bosch Multi purpose 6mm test bit.

Here I will try the Bosch bit again but first I drilled a pilot hole using Vermont American Titanium Nitride coated twist drill bit ( notice the chips )

Probably same performance as without a pilot hole ... fine chips again ...

Re: All about Drill Bits, Taps and Dies

I have no doubt this bit can go through metal. I would not normally use it as I can get better action and performance on metal using split point Norseman bits.

However when drilling multi layered multi material this will be my bit of choice. i.e. Concrete with embedded metal ... et al specially when I don't know what the imbedded materials are.

I'm confident this bit will cut through material softer than mild steel . Looks like it can also be sharpened several times by just using only a bench grinder. I did not check hole accuracy anymore as it seems that this bit was not made for high accuracy purposes ( more so when re sharpened ) ... although I could be wrong on this.

I'll try it on concrete later.

Re: All about Drill Bits, Taps and Dies

i've tried sharpening tungsten carbide tipped saw blades before but the edges looks rough, maybe the stone abrasive would shatter the carbide, and would result in a dull blade, now i use a diamond coated disc to re sharpen carbide and my tungsten electrodes which i use for tig welding...hth
