are commercial router table worth it?

I am contemplating on building one using Kevin Brady's step by step guide (minus the diy insert, i still dont have the skills to work with plexiglass)

Or i could just buy one ( i have no idea how much it costs)

I see that Timber made one and Incc63 got a GMC model.

What i fear most is the fence and the rail. I dont think i can make one perfectly squared. Everything else is straight forward except for those. Oh as well as the depressed guide for the push stick. I Have seen someone in another forum use an aluminum insert for that one

I was wondering if someone actually made a fence with a rack and pinion just like the fence in the dewalt 745 table saw. It sits PERFECTLY square, just turn the knob and you are done!

Re: are commercial router table worth it?

not much need for complication with rack and pinion. I did once make a fence for the rt using angled aluminum bars. they are much easier to work with and has minimal to no expansion to contend with as humidith changes...

Do you by any chance still have a pic of the setup for the aluminum angled bars?

I can sort of imagine how it is set up.

I am getting all giddy and excited now! Now... to get an aluminum saw blade for my miter saw! (never will i saw aluminum by hand ever again!!!)

Re: are commercial router table worth it?

I've used both. As far as my usage is concerned, I think my DIY table and fence were more than enough.

has anyone used a ball bearing drawer guide slide as a router table fence guide?

I've been online for a good while and haven't seen one use a slide. IMO it would only hinder your adjustments, make it harder to construct and the pros are none. it would not even provide you a guaranteed parallel (which you don't need anyway). Using a slide would also force you to adjust the fence from the two sides, a free floating one can give you adjustments on one side only.
to make it short, there really is no upside to using a slide for the fence in a rt... IMHO of course.

Re: are commercial router table worth it?

hmmm.. ill skip the drawer glides. will try aluminum instead

I played with an old sears-craftsman single speed router thats was given to me by a good friend (this thing is at least half my age {i am 26 by the way} but most likely older than me) and it seems i could make dados, lap joints , rabbets to a decent accuracy. And thats what i simply wanted the router for.

Its medium sized, 1/4 collet and i think its 1hp. Since its single speed, I am pretty much limited to using only <1" diameter bits.

I'll take a photo and post it here 🙂 it still works like a charm!

this thing works great! except for the fact that its 110volts.. and blew a couple of transformer fuses, but now it seems stable... hmmmm

now... the router table!

Re: are commercial router table worth it?

I have a Bosch Portable Router Table and I can say that I am happy with it. I do occasional woodworking and it has served my needs quite well.

I use a Bosch 2 1/4 HP router with it.

Here's a pic of RT stand I built for it ( not yet finished in this pic).

Aside from amazon.com check coastaltool.com as well. They do offer it from time to time too.

Re: are commercial router table worth it?

Nice!

I might soon be convinced to buy from the states and just pay the extra shipping... seems kinda worth it

When I computed the cost of a DIY RT and a commercial one there is not much difference. However with a custom built one you could actually build it according to your exact needs.

These were the other ones I checked before deciding on the Bosch Portable RT. I chose it because it has the largest table top plus for compatibility because my router is a Bosch.

and I got this

http://www.amazon.com/BOSCH-RA1181-Benchtop-Router-Table/dp/B000H12DQ6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1261395442&sr=1-2

I paid around $65 shipping charges and it filled half the balikbayan box so I was able to put in some extra tools with the shipment. I suggest you hunt for a sale. IIRC I paid $175 for my RT.

Re: are commercial router table worth it?

that sounds like a pretty damn good deal.

i sourced for a commercial router table locally. the closest was a makita sash router table (no model number). I didnt see it either coz i just called. it was a whopping 34K!!!!

I have no idea what it looks like though and what features.
