Re: Automotive Tools

Imagine if we are spending for service. The cost will file up quickly so this is best left with DI Y and the money saved used for buying tools. None the less the setup cannot be brought to a regular mechanic. Lots of stuff that needs to be read and studied to do the job properly.

Moji ... I know you like Knipex Pliers too ... here I got some more

12" Cobra and 10" Angled Diagonal Cutter

Hose grip pliers .... one will appreciate this when working with automotive hose related tasks .. makes it a lot easier. By the way when taking out and installing hoses a few spray of WD40 will ease up the job.

This one you also purchased. Klein Wire Stripper for bigger wires AWG 12 , 10, 8 & 6

Here's the last ones of the Nicholson files loot.

I wished I purchased the ones with handles only.

Re: Automotive Tools

The Ingersoll Rand 1/2" drive impact wrench gets a new boot.

I am slowly getting the tools needed to be able to do flaring and bending of tubes such as those for brakes and fuel lines ... for now the cutters first ... one tool at a time.

still a long way to go to have that capability .... LOL

Re: Automotive Tools

Looks like the vinegar is doing it's job on the rust. More than 24 hrs soaking.

I wonder if it would do better if I change the vinegar and soak it for another 24 hours.

Re: Automotive Tools

I will have a need for this Heyco Piston Ring pliers later so I wanted to clean up the rust. Initially I wanted to do an electrolysis job but I don't have baking soda. Decided to first try what's available on hand which is vinegar. Let's see how good vinegar soaking works on rust. They say molasses/water mix also works well with stuck up rusted parts but I have not tried it yet.

Re: Automotive Tools

I think it's because you forgot to put crushed pepper and garlic.

Kidding aside, the locally available vinegar (as synthetic as it could be) could not be that acidic for such use. It may be acidic for our taste but not for rust removal I think. The rust may have already saturated much of the needed acid so better get another fresh batch I suppose.

Ninong, how come you did not use baking powder as you previously planned. It's available in all groceries and the Hammer brand that Owyn used imported but could be found I guess in mall hardware still.

I would like to suggest muriatic acid on the worst case scenario if naval jelly is not available. If the vinegar doesn't cut it, you may try "coking" it just like what the local golfers do, they submerge the iron wedges in coke (Coca-Cola regular) overnight.

PS: The coke may not be safe to drink anymore the next day 😀

Re: Automotive Tools

@ Jarod

This is the first time I'm hearing "coking". Does it remove rust too?

On the vinegar I noticed that the rust became loose that when I lightly scrape it it literally falls out.

I'll power wash this pliers and then put it back in fresh vinegar.

Re: Automotive Tools

Sige oil bath / spa muna siya ... after a bit of sanding and a random pass on the bench wire wheel ....LOL

I could make it look prettier but that means bringing out the Dremel and a small wire wheel. Overkill na siguro yun .

Re: Automotive Tools

Ok na ito. Heyco Piston Ring pliers 200 pesos + 15 pesos vinegar. LOL

It was the vinegar that made rust cleaning easy. Jarod says that a orig vinegar will be better and I believe it would. Acetic acid lifts off rust from the metal.
