Since i broke my cheap, small nameless china bench vise, for many years now, my garage doesnt have a bench vise. I ve been wanting to get a big bench vise since then. I really want my next vise to be not made in china but those england and american vise im seeing are either not big enough or ridiculously expensive (wilton usa 35k (LYS hardware)!!). To cut my introduction short, i got a 9" nicholson from LYS hardware for 7500pesos. And yes i know, it is made in china. But it has a name on it and its big. Now that i know that a bench vise is not an anvil and it hates a cheater's pipe, maybe it'll last longer.

Re: Bench Vise Stand.
Okay on with my thread title "Bench Vise Stand"...
I have a lot of metal projects in the past but most of it i hired a welder to do it for me.
Last week is a holiday. i suddenly got the attitude to go ahead and mess up my garage to do some metal works.
And here i will show you my OWN first big project.
First the Materials:
Rim
Wheels
C-beam
Metal Scraps.(flatbars, pipe tubing, shaft)
bolts and nuts
1kg of 6013 rods.
cardboard for pattern
then the tools:
grinder
drill
hand-held metal hacksaw
150amp stick welder
ruler
chalks
Re: Bench Vise Stand.
Materials:
-Rim
Did you know that like lechon manok, there is actually a whole industry of rim repairs here in MManila. But unlike the Litson manok these "Rims for sale" guys are always swarming in one street and very happy to be neighbors with each other. So most likely if you see one, you will find them all.
I could not get a broken rim when im asking them. Actually i dont think they want to sell a broken rim, they would rather fix it and sell it at a better price. A fixup jeepney rim (17 inch) sells around 1000 a piece.
I still think a broken rim is a better deal for me. So I went home with nothing.
Then i Went to sulit.com, upon searching for rim i chanced upon an inactive post selling an old bench vise attached to a truck rim. Interested only on his truck rim, I called up and went there to get it. Then lo and behold the old bench vise is a 1969 bullet type wilton. Except for a chip in the lower jaw, everything works fine.
The man doesnt realize that he is selling a collectible wilton vise, all throughout the negotiations he actually thought i was interested on his big rim. I got the rim and the wilton vise for 2k. Which IMO is a steal since if you go by its total weight you can sell the metal for 35/kg and it will easily go over 2k. Maybe he already knows its metal junk value, that is why he doesnt lower his price from 2k, well at least he doesnt have to carry it and sell it to a junkshop. And we are both happy. 🙂
--here is the poor wilton:
It's working and even slide better than my new nicholson. And it doesnt wobble at all unlike my new nicholson. And yeah! its ugly!. but i already went to a local machine shop. They said they can make it beautiful again.
For those who are not familiar with Wilton, it is one of the best American made vise cast in steel (not the usual iron like most everyone do nowadays). And this company doesnt make this kind of vise anymore since they decided to make their vise in China out of cast iron.

Im sorry I got carried away there. Ah yes the picture of the rim...

Re: Bench Vise Stand.
Dolly wheels - 200 pesos each if bought new from hardware, made in china. But I got 4 japanese dolly wheels i bought long ago from a japan surplus shop. This project use only 2 wheels.

Re: Bench Vise Stand.
Flatbars and Pipe.
Went to metal scrap yard near my place and bought assorted metals for this project and more for my supplies. It's cost around 500pesos, i think less than half of it was used for this project.
I also scrounge for scrap materials on my backyard and splat everything on it. Hah! my biggest project ever.
Re: Bench Vise Stand.
Re: Bench Vise Stand.
This project has 3 parts; the Stem structure, the wheels, and the removable handle. It took me 3 days to do this.
although it is not completely finished , its already operational, at least
partially. As you might have seen on the pictures, the miserable welds will prove that its really my work.
