Re: Best level tool

As accuracy goes up, affordability goes down? How do you measure/decide 'best' point on a cost vs. accuracy curve.

I guess the next step up from water tube would be ... self-leveling laser? I was surprised at the magnitude of the disagreement between water tube and laser. Wasn't just a mm or 2 or 3 at several meters but much more. Not sure what the problem is, friction in the plastic tube? Is there a minimum or optimal size of tube, or a better fluid that could be used?

Got these levels online ... the Bosch 5-point about two years ago, and the DeWalt 2-line a year later. For levelling specifically, the 2-line is more convenient but a 5-point (or less) will work just as well; you just have to rotate the unit on its mount.

Re affordability, I would say that online is 'affordable' but sad to say, for some reason, local prices are unaffordable/stratospheric in comparison ... not just for levels but laser tools in general. For online, there are cheaper brands/models (sub $100) than these two which were in the $100-200 range at the time, as well as more expensive and vastly more expensive ones. Warranty period is another comparison, e.g., 3 yr for Bosch/DeWalt US vs. xxx :hammer: 😡 for local.

Re: Best level tool

laser levels are the best provided they are periodically checked by qualified technicians for maintenance, because in time they tend to lose accuracy (jobsite conditions/handling). why don't you use other leveling hand tools like the spirit level. buy the longest level possible for better accuracy especially when installing door jambs, dry walls and etc.

Re: Best level tool

best and cheap often don't mix in one item.... best for a given amount is another thing, how much is your budget and what do you intend to level?

Re: Best level tool

it's hard to imagine a level hose not being accurate how would water not seek it's level? surface tension? partial occlusion of one end?

tho transparent tube+transparent water+white wall == potential to misread the level.

perhaps a level hose with graduated cylinder at each end's the solution 🙂 but common sense dictates that if a level hose and laser disagree - i'd go with the hose.

Re: Best level tool

The cheapest level you can use is a water level hose , really, just make sure there will be no bubbles in between to get a perfect level . But you can check also amazon.com for some bar leveling tools of about 72" or 96" in length. Maybe you can have someone buy and ship it to your house if you have relatives abroad. Here are some links that may interest you !!!!!!!

Re: Best level tool

Been using water hoses all my life for leveling and never had a problem.

Can be a bit messy when you spill but you just have to watch out for the loose end and you should be good.

Re: Best level tool

May I ask what is the preferred size of hose to be use in long distance leveling? May be I been using too small diameter thats why there is a big discrepancy

Im using 1/2" dia level hose, the neon green colored hose.

Sometimes discrepancy comes from the users. Leveling using a hose shall be read at eye level.

Re: Best level tool

I use the clear hose somewhere between 1/2" to 3/4" in outside diameter. Best to have something to tie both ends to so you can check the level when it's fully stationary. Also, read the lower meniscus on both ends at eye level.
