Reporting failure of a Bosch GSR 14,4-2-LI cordless drill purchased in 2010 (barely 2 years old, light usage).
One Li-ion battery was found dead, not charging last year (2012). Other battery still OK as of last year. So I assumed battery failure then, not charger failure.
Asked Bosch PH last year whether it was unusual/unexpected for their Li-ion battery to fail after only two years light usage. Golden kind of answered "not unusual" ... and said or implied that two years was roughly about what you could reasonably expect from a Bosch battery. There is no manufacturer info or specs on expected lifetime, other than an indirect suggestion based on the very short (one or at most few months) local warranty.
Now (2013) the second battery is also dead, not charging. But voltages among the AL 1820 CV charger's 4 contacts seem a bit low ... 5, 5, 8.6 V with no battery inserted ... but I don't know what the normal values are. Could be a charger or battery problem, or both.
Bosch PH quoted P7K on a replacement 1.3 Ah battery. With the drill/charger/batteries kit costing P5-7K brand new, unlikely I would spring for a replacement at that price.
If it turns out to be battery failure, anyone know any local shops that can replace cells in battery packs of power tools, Li-ion or NiCd?
Wanted to report this failure in the original thread for this drill:
Re: FS: BOSCH Cordless drill (post #18 )
so that we have complete lifecycle story, from purchase to failure, but that thread is closed now.
Re: Bosch GSR 14,4-2-LI cordless drill failure
Hi,
I just thought I would make a few comments here myself. I'm a Canadian retired here and have many cordless drills drivers skill saws, reciprocating saw etc.
I find the same problem as you with some. I have a dewalt saw with two batteries that have died, a Ridgid driver that both batteries have died- lifetime warranty, but thats in Canada and too costly to ship back. Makita brands have done well for me so far. I'm not sure if I can replace the batteries here or not yet. I have a small Bosch driver that I just love, one battery is a bit weaker than the other but still working good. My batteries are double the size available here and not sure why.
Sorry I don't have answers but just added to your questions. Best of luck!

These are very common problems with drills.. Were you able to find the solution? Just hire a good mechanic and get it solved ASAP:thanks:

Some older models of Cordless Drill Drivers have already sat down long in the shelves before these are sold. This probably might be the reason why the batts don't last that long anymore.

^ True. The Li-ion batteries have a date of 2009, so I guess they were really 3 yrs from manufacture at time of sudden (not gradual) failure.
On other hand, the NiCd batteries of the GSR9.6-2 are 2006, so they lasted 7 yrs (assuming they failed ... still have to check that it isn't a charger problem).
