Hi PHM,

does anybody tried to DIY you cordless power tool battery.

I have this Bosch GSR 9.6 cordless Drill I bought about 3 years ago. One of its battery is now Dead, It won't hold any power anymore. The other is barely holding. I already drained the battery as suggested to remove the memory effect of a NICD battery, still it won't hold any charge.

Now, I have this idea of replacing the battery inside the battery pack. My question is can the motor of my bosch GSR9.6 can hold the power of a Li-Poly battery 11.1v 1100ah 20c?

I'm thinking that there is only about 1.5v difference, is that alot to toast my motor? or will it just make my motor more powerful?

I have this Li-Poly I used for Airsoft & I think it is the same battery used in RC.

TIA
Trist

I think the first question should be: can the Li-Poly supply the current needed by the drill?
If the drill draws more than the battery's rating, the battery might overheat and burn.

"Q: Will my battery explode or start on fire?
A: In all the tests we have performed, we have never seen a Lithium Polymer explode. If used with proper care, your battery will not start on fire. Most Li-Po fires are caused by incorrect charging, damage to the battery itself, shorting the battery by crossing wires or pulling too many amps out of the battery during discharge. Our Perfect Balance batteries are made using the latest technology and are resistant to igniting if discharged incorrectly or damaged. In most cased they will produce a little smoke and heat up to about 200 degrees for a short period of time. Caution must still be used especially when charging."

If I were in your shoes I'd have that Ni-Cd battery pack repacked by professionals. Just search sulit for "battery repacking" and you'll surely find one close to your location.

As Joey81 said, your better off having the batteries repacked by pros. There are companies like Battery King or something similar in some malls. If you are near Robinsons Metro East there is one on the 3rd floor that sells and repacks what you need. Good luck.

Re: Bosch GSR 9.6 Dead Battery

Joey 81.... I agree, repacking of battery should be done by the professional. as you suggested I search in sulit but i cannot find one that will repack a Ni-Cd battery pack for a cordless power tool. They only repack laptop battery.

Can Anybody point me to the right direction for repacking my 9.6V Ni-Cd Battery pack.

But as a DIYer and out of my curiosity and for the benefit of PHM I would like to find out if it will work.
I do not suggest that they do it but I just want share my experience in doing it.

My Bosch GSR9.6 served me well for the past 3yrs and a replacement is coming soon (Bosch PS31 & PS41 combo). So, whatever happen to my GSR9.6 it will be fine with me and my Li-Po battery is just there laying around waiting to be used again.

Re: Bosch GSR 9.6 Dead Battery

Hi Tris,
Info on lipo; a fully charged 11.1V will have a voltage of 12.6V. Your, 1100mah 20c will give a max amp delivery of 22 thats about 277 watts. I suggest holding that drill with 2 hands and gloves, just kidding about the two hands but not with the gloves. That extra voltage might melt something. But then RC 1/10 rockcrawling uses 540 sized brushed motors that I saw in my drill these normally handle 7.4V lipos but during competition runs 11.1V are used. Could be okay.
Cheers,

Even you repack the lithium but ,"its only a crack on the shell" because whats inside is the real issue which is " How would you charge that lithium bat?..Lithium charging requires special circuitry thats why all lithium batteries have a pcb circuit board connected to the battery and should match with appropriate charger..:havefun:
Sometimes it is better to buy new set of tools than have it repack which is costly -elpho at sta.cruz cost bat @ 400 per pc so for 9.6v u need Php 3200..And the lesson here is that buy cordless tools that have easily accesible local supplies of parts. One such example if you buy a ryobi cordless tool you can buy a replacement battery for a mere 500.00 pesos in some surplus seller which is very cheap..:seehearspeak:
